I’m not terribly offended by the one note thing. It definitely makes the artist not very deep and not something I’ll get super into, but it’s nice to get some new punk songs here or there and that’s what I feel like I got.

For the record I do recommend the entire remake’s new album of material (you can find it on Spotify). Even... dare I say this... Machine Gun Kelly’s song with Travis Barker ? I really loathe MGK but that song is good.

WHAT!? how?!

By God.

I was randomly thinking today I should share a playlist of my favorite 80s Christmas songs. Maybe this was more necessary than I realized.

I only want real songs like that. In general, I fucking hate Christmas songs.

That would be the general idea of the playlist. There are a lot of great Alt/New Wave/Punk Christmas songs from that era that never get any airplay.

Absolutely no bullshit, Tourist, I loved that. Totally up my alley, which kinda surprised me, based on what I recall previous original music you've recorded sounding like.

I have more to say but tonight's been kinda crazy at work, but your band has a fan(girl) now ;).

I really like Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers. I wish there was maybe a little more variety in the middle part of the album but it's all great. Has some Radiohead vibes at times, I like DVD Menu (though why that name?), I love the Illinoise-era Sufjan part of I Know the End, which is the best track for sure, though I like it all. Garden Song is great, Kyoto is great, Punisher is great, Moon Song is great - "we hate Tears in Heaven / but it's sad his baby died" is a fucking stellar line, and her lyricism, which is quite funny and unique, elevates the record further. I also really like Graceland Too. I see the record is dedicated to her dog Max, which I'm sure some of the lyrics in I Know the End refer to?

I mean, the song sounds like a DVD menu, haha. Have you ever fallen asleep watching a movie and left that shit playing in the background?

But according to Phoebe, more specifically:
It’s a reference to the last song on the record—a mirror of that melody at the very end. And it samples the last song of my first record — “You Missed My Heart” — the weird voice you can sort of hear. It just felt rounded out to me to do that, to lead into this album. Also, I’ve been listening to a lot of Grouper. There’s a note in this song: Everybody looked at me like I was insane when I told Rob Moose — who plays strings on the record — to play it. Everybody was like, “What the fuck are you taking about?” And I think that’s the scariest part of it. I like scary music.

The album sounds cool, tourist. Just listened to the first two tracks so far. Not sure if you were explicitly going for it, but I definitely hear some early '80s U2/The Edge influence in the lead guitar.

I finally checked this out for the first time about a week ago, and loved it.

Will definitely be up there for me on the year-end list.

Awesome! Thanks Ashley! Also, it’s less band and more “band”. I did everything on it from writing and performing to mixing and mastering (for better or worse!).

Not explicitly, but early era U2 has been so ingrained in me since I was a kid that it’s no surprise. The whole album was recorded with a Nash Strat and some of the amps were Vox, and Edge does use Strats and Voxes. And delay of course. Haha!

It's hard to miss the Edge on the opening track, but it moved away a little bit after that.

There was also a song that reminded me a lot of the title track from either Faith or Pornography, can't recall which now, I'll have to tell you when I hear it again.

Both of the above are good things in my book.

Yesssssss! The Cure from 1980-1992 is IMO one of the top 5 spans of any band ever. They were probably the most influential on this record, which is pretty much a downer through and through. But that’s how I’ve always written. It’s been freeing to do it all myself and not have to compromise how I imagine a song should be because of other band members Larrying it up.

You know what? We had some success with DI this year, I would personally like to go back to a point total End of Year list thread. I would be willing to do it, with LM's help, if he's up to it.

I just really enjoy the communal nature of revealing the top list at the end. Even if only a handful of us participate, we can probably still make some fun out of it.

Also, just selfishly, I've actually been listening to new albums again this year so I want to participate ;).

I’m in.

I've listened to little "new" music, in terms of discovering new artists this year, so my list is going to be more conservative than normal (though it's certainly been trending that direction), but I'm looking forward to seeing some recommendations.

If you build it, they will come.

Thankfully there was very little Grammys discussion around here because the show and winners are usually trash, but with all the internet outrage about various snubs of popular artists, I'm mainly shocked that Dylan got zero nominations for an acclaimed, Billboard #1 album that should have at least contended in Americana or Contemporary Folk or whatever.

Like I could be upset about Fiona not getting in for AOTY but it's not really surprising if you think about it.

Definitely down for an EOY thread!

There's no Grammys discussion because it's completely fucking irrelevant. I'm surprised you pay any attention, I don't even know who was nominated.

What they did by not nominating the Weeknd was, I'm sure, a final straw for most people.

For about a decade now, I've stopped caring about the awards themselves, and focused on it solely as an entertaining night of musical performances. But even I'm so sour now, I don't know that I can even do that.

That’s how I’ve been too. I couldn’t care less about the awards themselves.

Count me in!

Awesome, I'll start getting things together tomorrow to make sure I understand exactly how everything is meant to work.

Even if only a few people participate with numbered lists, I still hope it encourages conversation .
