Storms don't really last very long in Queensland either ... they're just fucking intense. It can be brilliantly sunny at 4pm and at 5pm, but in the intervening hour, everything went almost as dark as night, the skies opened, and about a month's rain fell. Not to mention a lightning strike killed your modem, as happened to me once (I'd unplugged everything from the power sockets, but forgot to unplug the telephone cable!).

Oh no, it didn't kill my modem, everything was working fine even after that I just thought I'd be safe and turn off every powerpoint in the house. And so I spent the next two hours reading a book and listening to albums on my iPod.

Less than two hours ago, it was nice and sunny. Now we've got some of the heaviest rain I've seen in months. Bring it on - but I'm glad I'm not going out today!

And hello thunder!

It's so sunny outside. :panic:

That was a generic "your", not a specific "your", in the sense of "one's modem". Poorly phrased, admittedly.

And today's weather has been a bit disappointing so far. It seemed to be getting good, but now it's just a light drizzle. Meant to be some wild weather later though.

Worst albums of the year is pretty easy for me, at least! That said, I'm still out of the loop re: Y Not. Also, any (good!) albums you reckon I should hear? I asked you this last year and a couple of your suggestions were fantastic.

Well why don't you bring a tape over! I can bake a cake. Don't give me that Pacific Ocean excuse.

My bottom albums from Not quite so bad to worst are:

1. Beach House – Teen Dream
2. Ke$ha – Animal
3. OMD – This is Modern
4. Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)
5. Nelly – 5.0
6. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Beat the Devil’s Tattoo
7. Ok Go - Of the Blue Colour of the Sky
8. B.o.B – The Adventures of Bobby Ray
9. Jason Derulo – Jason Derulo
10. The Fall – Your Future Our Clutter
11. Usher – Raymond v. Raymond
12. Ozzy Osbourne - Scream
13. Katy Perry – Teenage Dream
14. Ke$ha – Cannibal (EP)
15. Ringo Starr – Y Not
16. Avey Tare – Down Here
17.
David Byrne & Fatboy Slim – Here Lies Love
18. The Books – The Way Out
19. Lil Wayne – Rebirth
20. My Chemical Romance – Danger Days

Yep, at the last moment, something came in and swept away worst album of the year right from under Lil Wayne's ankle-ironed feet.

Um...recommendations :hmm:

Well, let's see...obviously I'm a huge fan of Brandon Flower's solo album, Flamingo. But, I don't know if you should waste your time, since you really don't like The Killers.

Not sure if you ever got around to High Violet or not, but that album's good times...except melancholy.

The Winter of Mixed Drinks and The Five Ghosts may not be up your alley, but I can't get enough of these two albums

Blitzen Trapper's Destroyer of the Void is worth a listen, though I'm not sure how you would react to it

Taylor Swift's new album

Four Tet, if you haven't heard it, I think you would get a lot out of.

And...that's all I can think of for now.

Is Ashley having a conversation with herself? Is it rude that I'm interrupting?

Huh, I didn't think that Beach House album could really provoke dislike, just apathy (as it has in me; don't get the hype).

Didn't expect to see Animal there. I thought you liked it?

And good lord, I've no idea how you listened to that B.o.B. album. I've suffered through Nothin' On You and that was quite enough, as I'm sure my scathing review of it over on RYM illustrates.

That's plenty to keep me going! Will see what I can do. Though I admit I'm more willing to give Brandon Flowers a go than bloody Taylor Swift, no matter how much GAF may sing her praises.

I keep meaning to listen to Four Tet, Frightened Rabbit, and The National, so I'll get onto that.

I had to look up The Five Ghosts and Blitzen Trapper. On the former, huh, I remember people losing it over Stars three years ago but I never listened. On the latter, oh dear, the genre tags on RYM ...!

As for you, have you listened to The Depreciation Guild? Kind of curious if you'd like it or not.

There's just only like 3 songs on it I even get anything out of :slant:

I do like Animal, but it still ranks kind of low, so it somehow managed to be in the bottom 20.

I actually kind of like the B.o.B. album . It could be way better. Really it's only like the bottom 10 that I find truly atrocious.

I know there's probably no way you'd ever like Taylor Swift, but damn that is a good pop album.

Get to it, boy!

I love The Five Ghosts so much, I can hardly express. It's ridiculous, I'm still not sure why it's not my favorite album of the year, then I listen to it and remember there are like two incredible clunkers of songs on there. Blitzen Trapper reminds me of Tom Petty, but...like, an indie rock Tom Petty, but...kind of prog folky (quote the Travis). I love it so much.

They're on my list, I'll add them to the playlist for tomorrow.

You know, I really didn't get it either for the longest time, but like The XX's debut, it has creeped up the list to become one of my favorites of the year. Definitely helps that Lover of Mine is one of my favorite songs of the year; beautiful, enveloping pop, that one.

Ahh right.

Is the other stuff on B.o.B.'s album not quite so horrifically whiny as Nothin' On You? I nearly threw myself in the Brisbane River with a millstone around my neck when I got it stuck in my head while I was up in Queensland. Oh, and thanks to a Sydney taxi, I finally had to suffer the abject horror of Kid Rock's All Summer Long! It was played after Nothin' On You. Thank god we then got to our destination and I could escape.

I'm surprised to see how much people are raving over Taylor Swift. At first I thought it was in that kind of indie ironic sense like how Britney Spears got embraced a few years back, but evidently not! Well, if I'm bored, maybe I'll give her album a listen just so I can at least claim an informed opinion.

Well then, I'm going to have to get around to The Five Ghosts, aren't I! Got High Violet downloading now.

If you like The Depreciation Guild, I'd suggest giving Film School's Fission a go too.

See, it doesn't even leave enough impact on me to convince me to return. I've given it two or three chances and I just don't feel compelled to spin it again.

I think the big grower on me this year is the Film School album I mentioned in my last post. Heart Full Of Pentagrams, Nothing's Mine, and Find You Out have become three of my favourite songs of 2010.

No, there's not a lot on the album to really make it worth your while, literally every other song is decent, and then the ones in between are complete shit. But he's a fun artist and I was pretty damn excited to see him at Lolla.

I've been a fan of Taylor's for quite a while, so I'm pretty proud of this album, she really did a pretty decent job for a 20 year old. Reminds me of B.B. King asking Bono how old he was . (Now that's not to say that her lyrics are incredibly insightful or anything, but she's maturing as a lyricist is more the point).

Oooh! Oh both counts.

I might need a reminder on that one, but I will attempt to take that under advisement

Somehow or another I managed to miss that one.

Just to clear it up, I don't watch Yo Gabba Gabba (even my sister feels sort of lukewarm towards it) but I stumbled across that last week when looking up Boots.

I'm not regretting it.

Hah, sounds like I'd hate it. Have you heard Bruno Mars' album? I've seen that blasted in a few quarters as one of the worst of 2010, and given his spot on Nothin' On You, I'm not shocked. Maybe one day when I'm drunk and HMHing it up, I might give it a go. But probably not. Now it's summer, I'm getting drunk during the cricket.

Out of genuine curiosity, how much of it is actually Swift's work?

Just listened to The Radio Dept.'s Clinging To A Scheme. Not bad. Definitely a 3.5 with suspicions of being a grower to 4. Now it's High Violet time.

I didn't think MySpace (sorry, "my____" now, apparently) could get any worse, but god their new design blows.

HA! That's the same way I found it.

No. And after the latest single, I can't bring myself to listen to it. I mean, have you heard that monstrosity yet?

I'm pretty sure it's almost entirely hers. I know she writes the lyrics.

I listened to it last night and I'm giving it a generous 3.5 right now, because it just didn't stick to me at all when I heard it. HOWEVER, I was sick as a dog and exhausted when I heard it so...

I had the misfortune of stumbling across it the other day :yikes:

People still use MySpace? I would've thought bots from Viagra companies would've already set up accounts for themselves and spammed the rest of the site.

Well, it does have links to prove it, doesn't it?
Yep, and I actually checked one of the sources too

This may well be Taylor's most personal album to date because she wrote all of the songs all by herself. The reason she didn't use co-writers, she said, is that she wrote most of it while on her Fearless tour.

High Violet isn't impressing me yet. 3 star territory, four songs in.

People? No.

Bands? Yes. Unfortunately, the music side of MySpace remains the best form of social networking (or page in lieu of a proper website) for many bands. For all its failings, it's still a good way to find out about a band's recent activity and forthcoming gigs.

I has a sad since "terrible Love" is my favorite song on there.

oh I'm passing out.

But look, it' 9:30, finally an ok time for me to go to sleep
