Opening Night Setlist Predictions

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Never mind opening night predictions, what are our promo appearance predictions?

SOI: The Miracle and EBW should be locks. Not sure what else they might do, but some appearances are clearly promoted as at least three new songs (e.g. Jo Whiley). I doubt another slow song after EBW, so no Song For Someone. I'm assuming it'll be a song done acoustically on the bonus disc though. So California?

Older stuff: I hope to god some of the promo performances are electric, but if they are that'll probably just mean Beautiful Day and/or Vertigo. I expect every promo appearance of more than one song to include at least one old track. If it's acoustic, Desire is obvious because they don't even need to rehearse to do that one. More left-field is the "glorious" return of Vertibanjo.

I can't help but think they'll change up the way the shows are constructed, and by that I mean the staples at the end of the main set / start of the encore, songs like SBS in the middle somewhere etc etc. I think there are some givens we all throw into a U2 setlist based on past shows, and I hope they throw away the script and construct something that feels new. I'm also going to try and throw in lots of new songs (will leave out TIWYCRMN and SLABT, thinking they will debut during the tour at some point)

My prediction for a 23 song set:

1. Iris - (has the same kind of rolling bass as EBTTRT did on 360, and would be different to the obligatory rocker)
2. Volcano - (Bono has mentioned the whole 'after grief comes anger' thing)
3. The Miracle - (keeps the tempo up, is the single)
4. The Troubles - (seems out of place, but after a Bono speech could sound beautiful)
5. Bullet the Blue Sky - (the intro/segue could be epic after an extended Troubles solo)
6. With or Without You - (have always thought the Elevation sequencing of these two was great)
7. Raised By Wolves - (piano / bass would flow nicely from WOWY)
8. New Years Day - (Edge gets two songs in a row to play keys)
9. Cedarwood Road - (Just like the flow from NYD) - Bono speech
10. Song for Someone (from b stage)
11. Stay (from b stage)
12. Rotating full band acoustic (SIAM, Satellite of Love, N&SOTR, This Is)
13. California - (Nice tempo to bring back the band)
14. Invisible - (Has to be played, goes well here - Bono speech about their beginnings)
15. Rotating very early track - (11 O'Clock, Street Mission, The Fool, OOC, Stories for Boys, ATAP)
16. A Sort of Homecoming - (because)
17. Vertigo - (they will play it somewhere)
18. The Fly - (back to it's best on 360, could be rotated with Ultraviolet, WGRYWH, UTEOTW)
19. Moment of Surrender - (good to close the main set)

20. Beautiful Day - (I loved it opening Notre Dame, could build the same intro)
21. Every Breaking Wave - (good lead in to...)
22. Where the Streets Have No Name - (can't be left out)
23. Up for grabs, leaning towards Bad, but could easily be AIWIY, Love is Blindness, 40

All that said - that is as safe as the sets will get.

I think they will dig deep into the back-catalogue to keep it interesting, and if this two types of shows thing is what happens, I can see them trying to shock people every so often. The last few tours have had 61, 60, 51, 55 unique songs respectively. I'm calling a big jump to 70-75 unique songs for this tour. Lots of early songs, more of Boy than we've seen for a while, maybe some October tracks like ITABTTW, Rejoice or October and possibly some pre-Boy songs for the diehards.

I really dig that set, very similar to mine. You just forgot Iris, that one has gotta be played live.

I'd like to see them do what Pearl Jam has done on their latest leg. Play an album in it's entirety in the middle of the set. They played No Code and Yield in order at random shows over the past couple weeks:drool: Roughly tracks 5-15 in the set:drool::drool:

Raised by Wolves is really starting to grow on me. That could be played around a Please or Bullet the Blue Sky section of concert. Iris hasn't quite grown on me just yet. Probably my least favorite from the album at the moment but it most likely will be played on the tour maybe around Pride(In the Name of Love).

Native son to close main set....vertigo to start encore. No pride and please play mofo

Take out five songs from #13-21 and you've got a realistic setlist, sir. I mean, there's no way they do more than two songs from October. And Crystal Ballroom is a stretch as well.

I love ASOH--> Bad. Should have been that on the album.

The only song that has a hope in hell from NLOTH of being played is Boots. I wonder if they will break up COBL and Vertigo this time?

1. The Miracle
2. Invisible
3. I Will Follow (because the guitar or whatever at the end of invisible sounds like the riff from IWF)
4. Until The End Of The World
5. New Year's Day
6. Volcano
7. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
8. Every Breaking Wave
9. Song For Someone
10. Beautiful Day
11. Elevation
12. City Of Blinding Lights
13. Vertigo
14. California

20. Pride

22. Cedarwood Road
23. With Or Without You
24. Bad / "40"

That's a pretty sweet setlist, but don't you think they're gonna have an acoustic segment of the show? With all this acoustic promo stuff, it's bound to happen, right?

It's possible. I mean my set is just a stab in the dark really. I would imagine Every Breaking Wave will stay in the (as someone else put) "Adele arrangement"

I think they have a lot of new material they can play live that won't kill the crowd. 8 or 9 songs from the new album could played.. Factor in the possibility of Invisible, Ordinary Love and why not bust out Crystal Ballroom. 11 or 12 new songs and still room for 10 or 11 classics and more recent material from the '00s that translates live.

I don't think I've got around to making a custom setlist yet. Well let's have a go. This is what I think could be realistic (with some rotation options), not what I'd most want to see.

1. Volcano
2. Vertigo
3. I Will Follow / Until the End of the World
4. The Miracle
5. Magnificent
6. Beautiful Day
7. All I Want Is You / I Still Haven't Found
8. Every Breaking Wave
9. Stuck in a Moment (acoustic)
10. A Man and a Woman (acoustic) / Angel of Harlem (acoustic)
11. Staring at the Sun (acoustic) / Stay (acoustic)
12. Song for Someone (acoustic)
13. Bad
14. Lemon / SYCMIOYO
15. Iris
16. Kite
17. Where the Streets Have No Name
18. Out of Control / Pride

19. Sunday Bloody Sunday
20. Raised By Wolves / Cedarwood Road
21. Bullet the Blue Sky / Please
22. The Troubles
23. One
24. Love Is Blindness

Here's my shot at something realistic:

1. The Miracle
2. I Will Follow
3. Vertigo
4. Iris
5. California
6. Song for Someone
7. Beautiful Day
8. Until The End of the World
9. New Years' Day
10. Still Haven't Found
11. Cedarwood Road (acoustic)
12. Stay or Desire (acoustic)
13. Stuck in a Moment or In God's Country (acoustic, just Bono and Edge)

14. A Sort of Homecoming (1st verse B&E, then back to full band)
15. Where The Streets Have No Name
16. Volcano
17. Every Breaking Wave
18. One

19. Please
20. Raised by Wolves
21. Sunday Bloody Sunday

22. Gloria
23. Bad
24. All I Want is You or WOWY
25. The Troubles

#11-13 could rotate on an almost daily basis. This way the band can embrace all this acousticness while not losing the audience, and also get a bit more variety.

23. One
24. Love Is Blindness

I've been trying to make one - this is the first one I've seen that seems feasible and in tune with the U2 m.o.

I wish U2 would throw out the typical formulas - come out swinging, acoustic bit, politics/heart of darkness, redemptive set-closer, moody show closer, etc.

Once you stick to that cycle, the list almost writes itself, but it's also so limiting.

But it sounds like they are toying with ideas of different setlists, so that's something.

Acrobat - that is a DREAM. I can think of no other song I would rather hear.

Dream setlist #1...I missed doing these.

01 - Invisible
02 - I Will Follow
03 - Volcano
04 - This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
05 - New Year's Day
06 - Until The End of the World
07 - Magnificent
08 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
09 - Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
10 - All I Want Is You
11 - Iris (Hold Me Close)
12 - Beautiful Day
13 - Every Breaking Wave
14 - California (There is No End to Love)
15 - City of Blinding Lights
16 - The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
17 - Vertigo
18 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
19 - Pride (In The Name of Love)
20 - Cedarwood Road
---
21 - One
22 - Where The Streets Have No Name
---
23 - Acrobat
24 - Gone
25 - With or Without You
26 - "40"

And I don't mind greatest hits/nostalgia sets, to be honest.

My dream encore would be a TUF themed encore throughout the tour and some variation on what songs would be played so it wouldn't get stale. It would be as follows

1 Wire/Indian Summer Sky
2 Love Comes Tumbling/The Unforgettable Fire/Promenade
3 A Sort Of Homecoming
4 Bad
5 11 O Clock Tick Tock
6 Pride/MLK/EPAA
-only on occasion

Maybe also a Rattle and Hum Encore
1 Hawkmoon
2 Angel Of Harlem/Love Comes To Town
3 Desire(full electric)
4 All I Want Is You
5 Heartland/Love Rescue Me

I know, I know. Very unrealistic and it won't happen, but it would be amazing. It's as shame those eras have been pushed aside, it makes me wanna cry. R&H gets a sporadic appearance or two, but TUF gets nothing.

Wow. Just found the Kite live version on the Window In The Skies single. I'm not an emotional person, but that almost had me in tears. That has a permanent spot on my top 5 live U2 performances. Can't believe I didn't discover it earlier.
I would be through the roof of they played it this tour, truly an amazing song. And Edge's solo is just too much for my heart, really incredible.

That is an unbelievably great performance from a band that's turned in plenty of them.

There's just so many things with this band that make you wonder (and i'm not overly emotional and not at all religious) how they connect you to whatever that higher, spiritual power is.

I'll never forget, the first time I discovered this performance, it was June 2008. Coincidentally just before I went for a walk at Boston's Castle Island, a beautiful, historical spot that juts into Boston Harbor at the end of the peninsula neighborhood of South Boston. I then remember riding around Boston and Cambridge, where my Dad grew up talking about past times, life and future ambitions.

It would turn out to be the last walk of any significance I took with my Dad as I had a busy rest of the summer, went to school for my last year of undergraduate college studies and my Dad passed away after a short battle with lung cancer in April 2009.

When I first discovered Kite in 2006, I always thought of my Dad and what the last days with him would be like. I just never in a million years thought it would be less than 3 years later that I had my "Kite" moment.

Anyways, just one of many examples with U2. To me this rivals Live Aid and Red Rocks, it's that good of a performance.

don't play these songs and we'll have a good setlist u2.

Vertigo OR Elevation
Desire
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Pride (In The Name of Love)
Bullet the Blue Sky
Sunday Bloody Sunday
With or Without You

Don't play those songs and you'll have a dead audience. Every U2 show from here on out will have Vertigo, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and With Or Without You

Elevation and I Still Haven't Found are an 80% lock and Pride is 50/50

I'd love to hear full band Desire, as much like the lovetown version as possible, but I'd be ok with not hearing the others you mentioned for a while.

I think songs like Cedarwood Road and This is Where You Can Reach Me Now will get the kind of treatment songs like Crumbs and Fast Cars got where they show up randomly on the later legs of the tour, but I hope I'm wrong, especially with TIWYCRMN, cause I love that song. I definitely think Bullet will be back, and they'll dig up a song or two from the first three records that hasn't had a lot of action in the last two decades.

Nicely done!:up::up:

Very realistic and I'd greatly enjoy this set to start out with.

I'd like to see more rotated in as time goes on, but I'd more than take this for opening night!
