My heart stopped as I glimpsed the Irish coastline, knowing that soon I’d be touching down. I looked at the sky, the sun was shining, and the sky was blue with a few white fluffy clouds. Without realising it I had started to hum Beautiful Day.
Got into town and dumped my case in my hotel room and strolled down the quays to the Mecca of U2 fans Hanover Quay. As I approached I saw some familiar faces from Abbey Road, Lisa, Jo and Patsie along with a few other fans. I must have got there around 12 to 12.30pm. Before I could even say hi to the girls Dallas went into the studio. That was a good sign Daniel Lanois arrived about 30 minutes after my arrival. Yet another good sign.
Bono was the first to arrive, with Larry about 30 minutes later, then Adam and lastly Edge. Every time the door opened our hearts skipped a beat hoping it was one of our heroes for it to be Sam or someone person.
We past the time talking about our U2 experiences and had a great laugh which made the time standing there pass so much quicker. Although those reading won’t find it as funny as those there this Irish Taxi driver was looking for something, he looked along the kerb, then in his car, then in his boot and then his engine. We were giggling wondering what on earth he was doing and I suggested we start singing “I Still Haven’t Found”.
We got wet with a couple of rain showers but they couldn’t dampen our spirits. Some of the fans had to leave before any of the band emerged from the studios, which was so sad for them.
I was watching those grey doors like a hawk, I wouldn’t move encase I missed them. How he done it I’ll never know but somehow Adam opened the door and got half way across the road before I spotted him. Everyone tried to remain calm. Adam signed for everyone and posed for photos, he was so gracious and didn’t panic when my pen didn’t work and Patsie came to my rescue: bow: I asked for a photo and it didn’t even object when I put my arm around his waist putting his hand on the small of my back. Someone asked how the recording was going and he said “really well” and smiled so obviously he’s happy with what they’re done. He even made a comment of how cold it was and how we must be freezing..
After that I got all excited again when Gluey phoned me. It was awesome to speak to her and have someone on the same smut level as me LOL. I see she keep everyone informed on my progress. And by the way her voice is so sexy…….
We could sometimes here the muffled sounds of drums & guitars and heard Bono going ohhhhhhhh at one point but nothing clear.
The sun set and it got colder. I was absolutely frozen but wouldn’t even move to go to the Spar shop for a warm drink encase I missed them. At about 8.30 a police van pulled up right in front of the studio and this gorgeous garda came up to the group I was with and asked if the band were in the studio. He was a fan and told us of his meets with them. He asked how long we’d been there and was amazed. He asked how many of us were there and said he’d back with tea for all of us, we all thought yeah alright. About 10 mins later he & his partner were back with tea and chocolate for all. I know the British police would never do that!
We asked if gorgeous Garda man could buzz the entry phone and get the band out. He laughed and said it was more than his job’s worth. Then a fracas started at the entry to the bands garage between some travellers (gypsies) and they ran over to deal with it. It was scary but gave us some entertainment and he looked hot in action.
We were all getting tired and cold although a couple of Irish guys offered their cars for a bit of warmth which was so sweet. Then all of a sudden there came the most glorious sound of the band as clear as anything, we al ran over to the doors and were so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I racked my brain, I can’t say what other song it sounded like but it was undeniably U2 and sounded awesome. And Bono singing “Get Up, Get up Get Up”, the band stopped and we all ran back to the other side of the road like naughty kids that had been caught eaves dropping. I suggested a title (unrepeatable here but those who know me can probably guess) and than our US friend said maybe it was for a Viagra advert!!
Larry left first as usual very quickly exiting stage left. Adam was next although the others went to wave goodbye to Adam I didn’t encase Bono walked out those grey doors. It seemed like eternity and then at about 12.30am the door opened and there stood Bono looking like a sex God glowing with celestial light as he beckoned us over
These large guys got there before us, shoving us out of the way the age of chivalry obviously dead!! Then our US friend yelled at Bono that the girls have been waiting 2 days to see him. Straight away Bono - Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire commanded “Come on, let the ladies through now." The sea of men parted. Lisa got up first, followed by Jo and Patsie, then a lovely couple from Dublin. I was on the other side of Bono with someone trying really hard to push me out the way. I was standing right at the side of Bono when he looked down at me, his eyes looking straight into mine
“Have I had you yet? “
“Not yet” I replied putting on my best pleading puppy dog eyes
“Come here” he pulled me up and I throw my camera at Patsie as he put his arm around me and pulled me close. This was it the moment 24 years of waiting for contact with Bono had finally arrived. I don’t know how I did it but I asked him politely for a kiss. Expecting him to refuse, he dumbfounded me by smiling and said “sure” and bent down to my level so I could put MY lips on HIS cheek. He’s skin is so soft and he smelt so sexy. Shame there was no photos of that moment but it’ll be in my memory and heart forever. I still haven’t got my set list signed, he’s the only one I need but I’ll leave that for another day. The choice wasn’t there photo or signature. No contest.
Cropped to protect the innocent
The rest is a blur, I took a few photos, and then he went in. Couldn’t get anywhere near Edge but I have been lucky enough to met him up close before. He was in this car and had to go as Bono was behind him. Bono honked us as he drove off waving.
After the band had left there was a lot of screaming, oh my gods and hugging. Walking back into town along the quays singing, “Hello, Hello we’ve just met Bono “as people gave us strange looks!
I don’t know if Gluey could understand what I was saying when she called, I presume I was coherent, I can’t remember if I was making any sense at that point.
Thank you, Bono & Adam. Thank you, Patsie for coming to my rescue twice.
The only thing missing was my closest friends, one day we’ll meet him together!!
