And the best part of what he's doing is the unseen - they've completely revamped their scouting and development staff so that in the future they can operate in a more sustainable way, similar to the Dodgers - with cheap homegrown talent supplemented by big name free agents and trades.
Cohen is a die hard Mets fan. He has more money than any other owner, and he's intent on fulfilling his promise to the fans to bring sustained success to Flushing. That doesn't mean winning it all every year, obviously - but at the very least being in the conversation to win it all every year - just like the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Astros, Cardinals, Braves, Phillies.
It's a half billion dollar course correction to rid the franchise of the stank of the Wilpon era.

Ok, so how does Correa fail a physical with SF and then sign with the Mets? Doesn't he have to pass a physical to sign with the Mets?

Allegedly this is an issue that he's had his entire career and that San Francisco knew about when they agreed to terms, but then got cold feet when it came time to sign the actual contact.
And he passed his physical and was cleared by San Francisco's doctors... their front office didn't like whatever the still unknown issue is/was and started to hedge.
That's when Borras sent a text to Cohen.

Correa's leg could fall off tomorrow and Cohen would shrug, write it off, and throw 400 million at Ohtani.
I'm not saying that just out of wishful thinking. I think everything he has done so far should make it fairly obvious that he does not care.
The Mets revenue can EASILY cover their current pre-tax salary. If they're able to generate enough revenue as the Dodgers have the past few seasons, which isn't crazy in New York, they would cover all operating costs plus on field salary and more or less break even.

Even if they were to lose, say, $200 million per year in revenue? It would take Cohen approximately 70 years to go broke at that rate.
His financial advantage over every other owner is huge, and he's intent on spending as much as he can in the short term to make the Mets an annual contender through free agency and trades, while building up the farm system at the same time so that they can start to operate with a more reasonable payroll 3-5 years down the road.
Guy agreed to pay someone who had a questionable physical 300 million over dinner via text. Anyone who thinks he's going to blink if it becomes a bad deal in five years isn't really paying attention.
It's easy to go all #lolmets because they're throwing crazy money at a guy who could break down by the midway point of his contract. But this isn't Fred Wilpon. Guy honestly doesn't care. It's a drop in the bucket for him.
Will it work? This year? Maybe, maybe not.
Frankly it's long term a good thing for baseball. It's going to force some long time owners to make a call over whether they want to compete with this lunatic or just sell the team to someone who does.

after already having the highest payroll in baseball he went and offered a $300 million dollar deal to a player who plays a position the mets already have a $300 million dollar player at, AFTER questions arose over said player's health.
