You know full well I'm fond of some urban areas too. But if you asked me to pick one or the other ... I don't think it's too hard a decision.

I think my ideal is a small old country service town with lovely classic buildings in a scenic mountain valley. You get almost everything with that, to some degree.

I wonder how much a regular dwelling in Liechtenstein would cost ...

in hindsight my post sounds more combative than it was meant to.

Definitely somewhere you'd want to retire to.

And BTW, Manhattan is the only place in the US that appeals to me at this time.

As it happens, Manhattan is the one and only place in the US that I staunchly never want to visit.

Boston is awesome. Everybody needs to check out Boston.

I guess I can't say much since I've never been to America, but seriously, the SOUTH-WEST. It's beautiful. And I bet there are as many highways and signs as near any other tourist attractions across the world. Uluru has a road and signs nearby, that doesn't make it any less amazing. Same with the pyramids of Giza.

Barossa Valley.

It's right on my doorstep and I have yet to visit, but that would include a drive through Elizabeth.

Ack, I know how that feels
Yay for tutoring! Has that started now? How's it going?

Ooh... I can't remember! I do kinda remember something now that you say that, but I can't remember where... I know I picked one up at the Giant's Causeway. Memory fail! If I find any anonymous rocks in my holiday stuff I'll figure that's what it is.

I'm okay, work has sent me to a different office to work on a big "smart metering" project, so that's keeping me busy. It's quicker to drive to but I have to start earlier... :grumpy:

Which means I have to go to bed now... :(

I'm starting today. :D

Hm, it may very well have been Giant's causeway now you mention it. :hmm:
What's a smart metering project?

:crack: I went to make lunch(still forever grateful to U-wen for giving me his fried rice recipe! we had leftovers rice and cabbage) and the thread's moved on several pages already.

See you, Alison!

I really need to talk myself into going to sleep soon ...

I might have a look at some respectable photos of Boston sometime.

I can't help but feel that Los Angeles is so commercialised and unappealing.

i approve entirely of this post. the southwest (and as i mentioned earlier), the northwest are the top two places i want to get to in the united states. flying over the southwest is like flying over the surface of the moon, i want to get onto the ground and see it.

Yeah, there are only three gigs anyway - this coming Friday (Brisbane), Saturday (Sydney), and Sunday (Melbourne). But Charlotte and I are hitting Brisbane early so that she can actually see some of the place and so that I can catch up with family/friends in Queensland.

Oh man, jealous! We've at least not copped as much extreme heat as last summer, but we've still cracked 40C a few times lately. :|
Well that's pretty cool, and those cities are quite far from each other anyway. I'm still hoping for an Aussie U2 tour, even not next year, maybe next tour. But I SHALL go down under!

And the bushfires are less this year too right? We haven't heard much on the news since december.. 40C is still insane. I'm happy with the -15 we had earlier this month. Though 0 is nice too.

I was definitely most impressed by Liechtenstein. I wish we'd had time to hit up southern Switzerland though ...

And speaking of the penguin and Welpie, in my recent uploading spree I've also uploaded these:

(Paris)
s640x480

(Lake Geneva)
s640x480

Really need to FINISH the uploads ... oh well, that'll have to wait until after the PT trip now!

 I forgot to ask you about these before, I'm saving them.

Oh and let's not forget: Penguin and Welpie at their first U2 concert!

Still a waiting game to see if they're coming in Oct/Nov '10 or March '11. I'm not as optimistic as I was ...

Yeah, haven't been any bushfires on the scale of last year's mayhem, thankfully. On Sunday it'll be a year since Black Saturday. We look like having a cooler February so hopefully there won't be anything severe for the rest of summer.

Think I have a couple more to upload, will let you know when they're up!

Yeah, I think I'll probably go with that. I also still want a second hand PSP at some point to play a few games I missed out on, like God of War: Chains of Olympus. Plus I'm wanting a PS3 soon. I was thinking of selling my 360, but when what will I do when Gears of War 3 comes out? UGH fuck buying consoles.

I pretty much love all the first and second generation games equally, just because those were the glory days. I remember the Christmas where every kid I knew either got Red or Blue. I still remember that my first starter was Bulbasaur and my first catch was Spearow. Ah, good days.

Vaporeon's been my favourite ever since I got one as my first holographic card back in 1999 or 2000. I almost always have one in my team, too, actually most of my favourites tended to be water-type. I also like Nidoking, Psyduck, Gengar, Blastoise, Marowak, Xatu and all of the legendary cats. I can't remember as many of the newer ones, but Zangoose and Kyogre are both pretty cool.

Sounds like a big dilemma. I'm glad I'm mostly into nintendo games so that made the console choice easy for me!

Yeah the first gen was really cool too, I got yellow and a gameboy colour. I spent years saving for it(started saving when red and blue came out, so that would've been 3 years till yellow) and still remember the day me and my dad went to get it. First thing I bought with my own money! Spearow, lol. Mine was a mankey, I had pikachu so I needed something to beat Brock. All this reminiscing makes me want to go back in time. THose were the days of awesome gaming.

 You've got great taste. What are the legendary cats btw? Do you mean Suicune, Entei and Raikou? :reject: They're actually dogs.
Kyogre is a great and strong pokemon, Latios is cool too. And I love that Murkrow got an evolution, it's a Crow with a hat. I'm totally using that in Soul Silver, it looks awesome! That and the evolution of Sneasel are about the only pokemon I like from the new generation, and Infernape is okay I guess..

Hm, I'm not seeing oct/nov '10 happen anymore, it's too soon. We would've had way more rumours if that was the case. There are some for south America though.

Yeah I remember that on the news, what a nightmare. :yikes: And STILL some people refused to leave their homes! I hope something like that won't happen again.

Awesome, I don't even remember how many we took! I think there's one at lake Zug, one at Biere... hmm.

I also reckon eastern Tennessee is reasonably attractive ... shame Chattanooga's a bit of a shit city though. (I forgive it due to the awesome trains.)

well...yeah. los angeles isn't exactly the most beautiful city in the world. it's hardly representative of the whole country.

But sometimes seeing as it is the second largest (?) city in the US, I can't help but judge the others the same because of it. But Boston sounds nice.

There HAS been planning for a gig in Wellington in Oct/Nov, fairly extensive negotiations actually. Haven't heard anything since December though.

OH I UPLOADED THE ONE FROM BIERE! How could I forget?!

i can't say i'm overly fond of western tennessee. it might be that i've mostly seen it in winter. i remember liking the view a lot more during the short time i was here in summer. i've only heard good things about eastern tennessee.

oh, it is! i was in chattanooga last year. tennessee starts to get much better views as you head east. the drive from here to nashville, one i've done so often i can do it in my sleep, has pretty much nothing to look at along the way. the only sights to see is a park and a civil war battleground.

Given how huge the US is though, this would be like basing your judgement of the entire ex-USSR on Moscow. Man, Moscow's nasty and run-down. Belarus must suck! See what I mean?

Oh right, I heard about the Wellington thing. Strange that it's been so quiet ever since.

:tsk: Bunch of drunk Plushies. Bloody alcoholics.

Central Tennessee had a few attractive spots but generally failed to impress me. If you got away from the interstates and towns, you could find a few attractive little places around the corner on rural roads, and the drive along the Natchez Trace is worthwhile.

The drive from Nashville to Mammoth Cave was piss-boring. Judging by central-south Kentucky on the surface, you'd never guess at the astonishing beauty underground.

true, but the only reason it got popular in the first place was because of the film studios. prior to that, california was really only for people looking for gold. (ha, one could say people still are, really.)

but as axver said, it's not fair to compare it against the whole country. hell, even new york, which is the biggest, isn't representative of the whole country. that's the thing, i think. nothing really is. you've got the concrete sprawl that is southern california, these huge mazes of skyscrapers that is every other big city, mountains, yellowstone...hell even the three coastlines (pacific, atlantic, gulf of mexico) are vastly different. i think that's one of the things i like best about america. it has so much to offer, there's really something for everyone.

you know what's creepy? listening to white as snow and driving along the natchez trace in the dark. i now get the creeps any time i drive past it. :reject:

I get what you're saying. And I'm trying not to judge the US by that.
