Question.

I know people of course got overly excited when Vertigo leaked/was released. But what were was the response to HTDAAB as a whole on here? Were people so excited that they just praised and praised it without realizing how sucky it actually was, or did some people straightaway point out its flaws?

Liam and gump are on the ball here. Before HTDAAB's release, EYKIW was divided by ATYCLB vs Pop arguments. When it came out, for the first week or so, we thought the two camps were reunited, with only a few lone voices of dissent. But people progressively dropped off ... I of course was one of them. At one point, I placed HTDAAB as U2's second best album, below UF and above JT. Now I only rank ATYCLB as being worse than it.

How is that worrying, how in the hell were we compatible, and how sexy is the hair? :D
I'm compatible with everybody, dammit!

And it's pretty sexy, though a little bit darker than I wanted.

Out of focus, sorry.

Without flash.

Absolutely. My main concern as an artist is the idea that everything's already been done - I mean in audio and visual terms. Has it? Since art is so universal, people often repeat things without knowing they've been done before.

The early 20th century was one of the richest times for art. Reminds me, I want to order a Franz Marc print for my room...

That' s a good question. I guess we won't know the answer until there's something groundbreaking that appears. I think there could be more exploration of what can be done with technology (or maybe I'm just not aware of some amazing stuff out there). But sometimes I tend to ask whether some forms of art such as painting have not reached a dead end.

 So say the band popped in to see first impressions. They then thought everyone loved it. I guess they figured out the backlash much later, which might be why Bono has consistently pointed out (since at least early 2006) that the next album is going to be a DEPARTURE from ATYCLB+HTDAAB.

Yes, this is a great point. No matter how many times you revisit a track like Vertigo or SYCMIOYO, they don't offer up much more. They don't reward repeated listens, so if you don't like them, odds are they're not going to change much in your estimation, and there isn't much to hold onto those who are initially into them. However, I found myself returning to GOYB multiple times simply because I was thinking that I hadn't fully encountered everything going on. Unfortunately, one of the things I only paid attention to on a later listen is one of the song's features I like the least (Bono's croak around 2:22), but you've got to take the good with the bad.

That's what I love about The Unforgettable Fire - it never ceases to surprise you. I'm glad you managed to get me more optimistic regarding the album. An additional indication is the cover, which returns to some TUF/JT reflective style. I'm cautiously optimistic!

I think if the band visited the website they would probably think they are contributing to people getting mental issues and would stop making music altogether.

Yep, I agree - true for any form of art. And it seems to be getting even rarer with time. I'm not by any account an art expert, but I can't name too many paintings from the past few decades that I would describe as truly groundbreaking. Popular music can still be somewhat more surprising, since it's newer, but I also find it difficult to be truly surprised (maybe I should get into other music genres).

I wish I knew more about visual art. I suppose my legal blindness puts me at a disadvantage there, but I still could be far more educated than I am. I love reading the posts people like Bonnie make about art. I'd say I'm most knowledgeable about music, really, and I certainly often wonder if some music paths have reached a dead-end. But you never know where the next innovation will come from. Thirty years ago, even with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, nobody would have ever predicted where metal has come and all the subgenres that have developed, especially in the nineties (I consider the early to mid nineties to be an amazing musical time in the underground). Sixty years ago, even bands like The Shadows would have probably been unpredictable. I really do often wonder what might be next for music; what totally unforeseen genre or subgenres will appear. I fear metal is reaching too many dead-ends at once, while post-rock is losing its original objective and becoming entrenched as a style rather than a movement. Since a lot of my collection is drawn from those areas, it's a bit disappointing for me, but then I want to expand more into other genres too.

They have visited though. They think that EYKIWers are militant fans and that PLEBA girls are scary

it's 5:40 AM. My dad is getting ready to leave for work. He asked me why I'm not in bed.

"Because U2's new song was released and I had to listen to it ten times!"

They might get their own mental issues from reading EYKIW a bit too much.

Could lead to crazy avantgarde things, you know ...

Well like I've said. The reason we never see Larry when the band's not doing anything, is because he's probably hidden away in a closet crying because everybody on Interference hates him.

UF always ropes me back in. No matter how sick of U2 I might be, no matter how much I don't expect to get much from the album, it never fails to succeed. Songs like ASOH and the title track have an intangible quality that resonates quite deeply with me every time.

I get the impression that with NLOTH, U2 are trying to make a proper album package. The cover is a good point and will hopefully serve more of a purpose than the ridiculous HTDAAB cover did.

omfg. I just realized GOYB is totally about Ali. I mean, that was sort of obvious. But it's about them when they were young. I mean, the 'couple at a carnival' imagery is clear, and that's sort of a young thing, but I just remembered a quote from Bono about how he fell in love with Ali in high school and how she used to walk around in an old pair of boots (wellingtons maybe?) that her cousin gave her, and how she had absolutely no idea how beautiful she was.

....

God, I need a life.

I feel I am not educated enough about art in general - music, literature, visual arts. Liberal education doesn't seem to work the way it used to some centuries ago, I guess. We're getting too specialized in our own fields and virtually neglecting things that happen in other areas. I regret this...

I don't see how some of the verse lyrics could possibly mesh with that, though. The chorus and verses seem to be coming from totally different places, almost like it's the chorus of one song and verses of another. I'd perhaps put this up as a discussion topic on WTAHAN, but I'd rather not receive dan_smee's high school music class final essay.

That's funny. I've been away for a few days, but I read the U2 police was coming after you out there.

I've felt this way too. I suppose I know a bit more than your average person about literature, but I wouldn't consider myself particularly knowledgeable at all, and would always defer to somebody else more educated in the field. Specialisation has its perks, and I love being able to devote myself to New Zealand history, but I'd also find some diversification greatly rewarding. I guess it's down to personal initiative and the pleasure you derive from it.
