The second one....
Anyway, it was then close to the time Bono was due to give a press conference at the Civil Rights Museum. My friends and I jumped in a car and headed over there. When we got there, there wasn’t much going on, but the reporters were starting to arrive. Then we head police sirens and joked how that could be Bono. But then, we realized that it was Bono in a big SUV being escorted by the police on motorcycles.
The caravan drove around back so my friends and I walked around with the press. It took a few moments for Bono to get out. And when he did he noticed the huge sign for the hotel by saying, “wow, that’s big!” Totally random.
Anyway, Bono went inside and so did we. We weren’t planning on going on the press tour with him. But we did go in and watched a bit as he, Ali and the girls stood in front of the first exhibit. I noticed as they walked on Bono leaned over to Ali and then Ali looked back to see where the girls were.
Some of my friends then left, while a few others stayed. We decided that we’d try to catch Bono on his way out of the building. As we were waiting we saw the girls come out. The driver of their car said to them, “either one of y’all want to drive?” The girls just giggled and looked at each other.
After a few more moments, we saw more commotion and noticed Ali coming out followed by Bono. As Bono stopped to sign some stuff for two young girls, I called out to Ali. She walked over and I said, “I just wanted to say hello.” She smiled and shook my hand - as she did the others too. Then Ali noticed that she had missed my one friends hand and she went back to shake her hand too. As she did, my friend said, “Thank you for taking care of Bono these years.” And Ali replied by saying, “it’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.”
We then said goodbye to Ali and noticed Bono was drawing a picture for the girls. I had seen Bono look at us while we were talking to Ali and he got a big grin on his face. The security guard told me to stand back, so I did. I figured I’d just have to call out to Bono anyway.
Bono finished with the girls and looked right at me. So I said, “do you have time for a few pictures?” He said, “yeah, c’mon over here.” The security shrugged and let us pass as I took my place next to Bono. My friend wasn’t sure if the first picture came out, so she was going to take a second one. I said, “sorry” to Bono and he told me, “that’s alright” and smiled. While we were taking the pictures he kept rubbing my back and then when we were done he patted me on the back.
As I left he kind of looked at me as if he knew me. All I said was “thanks Bono” and he just kept looking and smiling.
My friends jumped in and took their shots with the man. One asked if he had a couple more minutes, and he said “absolutely.” However, before another friend could get her photo taken, the mean security said, “Sir, you need to get going.” Bono kind of looked at my friend, then us, then the car, and then back at us before going. I said “goodbye and thanks” to him. He waved back as he got in the car. I also shouted out “bye Ali” and she waved back at us.
So with that I had two Bono encounters within about 3 hours of each other. Not bad for my 5th and 6th meetings with the man if I do say so myself.
