The 50's don't get nearly as much recognition because of the general rock music bias I guess. So let's talk about Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and others! What are the absolute essential albums?

Essential Classical from the 50's:

Dmitri Shostakovich - Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues for Piano op. 87 finished
Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 10 E minor, Op. 93
Ralph Vaughan Williams - Symphony No. 8
Aaron Copland - Orchestral Variations
Ralph Vaughan Williams - Symphony No. 9

Probably My Favorite Jazz albums from the decade:
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane
Blue Train (album) - John Coltrane

Thanks for the suggestions Screwtape. I've always been curious about Coltrane (thanks to Angel Of Harlem :reject: ) and Miles!

Didn't this guy invent rock n roll?

Check my last post. 20s

I remember watching the video for The Varsity Drag on MTV.

:sigh: Those were the days!

Buddy Holly is one of my favourites from that era. That man could rock, before anyone even knew what rocking was. SO many artists since then, and even currently, have been influenced by him. Pick up any greatest hits package for a primer.

Or, if you're interested and you ask nicely, I might be able to hook you up. :shifty:

i love classic rock. but im i like miles davis, john coltrane, and frank sinatra, chuck berry, and elvis.
i guess its kind of weird for being a teenager to like that kind of stuff oh well.
