2023 year in review: bests, worsts, surprises, etc

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Let's put all our thoughts in here, hey!

I finally found time to listen to Javelin. It's very good. It's an interesting record, I don't think it's quite as good as some are feeling, though, but I'm sure it will grow on me heaps. (It's also nowhere near as sad as I thought it would be, although I suppose perhaps the loss of his partner makes the uplifting love songs much more sad.) In some ways it kind of feels like someone told him to make an album with the following mix: Carrie & Lowell 50%, Illinoise/Michigan 25%, Seven Swans 15%, The Age of Adz 10%. To my ears it doesn't quite feel like it has its own place in his catalogue, aside from being a pretty damn good amalgamation of a range of his styles, and there are a few songs where that amalgamation just works so well. (I think I also liked The Ascension a lot more than the vast majority of Sufjan fans and so am a little grumpy that people (and even perhaps Suf himself) consider it the album after C+L.)
Goodbye Evergreen - 7 - the sonic blast is actually quite overwhelming and full-on.
A Running Start - 8 - lovely love song.
Will Anybody Ever Love Me? - 9 - gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, and as I continue to remain sadly single and see my ex with her new boyfriend at every event in my friendship group, a song I will be wallowing in for some time.
Everything That Rises - 8 - lovely. gorgeous.
Genuflecting Ghost - 6 - we had the Enchanting ghost, now a Genuflecting one. the guitar line is lovely. 2:53-3:12 is the best part.
My Little Red Fox - 7 - another lovely love song.
So You Are Tired - 10 - absolutely crushing in the best way. Straight to my upper echelon of Sufjan songs, alongside the likes of The Age of Adz, Impossible Soul, Fourth of July, Heirloom, Romulus, Vito's Ordination Song, Shoulda Known Better, Djohariah, Video Game, Sugar, Sister, America, Visions of Gideon, Back to Oz, John Wayne Gacy Jnr, The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us!, The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts and In the Devil's Territory.
Javelin - 5 - nice enough.
Shit Talk - 8 - a great journey that I'm still not quite sold on yet. I really like but also find it a touch weird that he brought back the C+L outro thing on this song.
There's a World - 8 - very lovely.
I wonder how much of the album was written prior to his partner dying.

I also listened to the Caroline Palochek record today, after experiencing a spiritual moment seeing her live at a festival a couple weekends ago, and fucking hell, it's perfect.

I don't think I listened to enough new music to make a list for this year, but the best has been My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross - Can't being the song of the year - and other favourites have been Genesis Owusu's new album, New Blue Sun, the Aphex Twin EP, Kurt Vile's new "EP", James Blake's new album, Destroyer's new album, and then there's a tonne of records I need to hear or revisit. (And I definitely did not need a song called Emily I'm Sorry.)

Best new old discoveries include Rina Sawayama's SAWAYAMA, Julien Baker's second record and Harry's House.

Best gigs in no particular order: Bon Iver, U2, U2, Elton John, Nick Mason, Caroline Polachek, Paul Dempsey, Stella Donnelly, Pavement, Phoebe Bridgers.

Favorite song of the year: Slowdive - Kisses. Captures all of their epic, spacious sound in a tidy pop package.

Least favorite song of the year: Big Thief - Vampire Empire. I like this band, but I am very tired of music journalism pretending that everything they fart out in a rehearsal is some kind of masterpiece.

Top three albums of the year:

1. Billy Woods & Kenny Segal - Maps.
2. Sufjan Stevens - Javelin.
3. Yo La Tengo - This Stupid World.

A few others I found impressive:

ANOHNI & The Johnsons - My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross. Might have invented a new sub-genre: chamber blues.
Feeble Little Horse - Girl with Fish. Ramshackle noise pop.
Kali Uchis - Red Moon in Venus. Lush, Latin-tinged pop.
Patrick Shiroishi - I Was Too Young to Hear Silence. Haunting, solitary avant-jazz.

Disappointments:

Both National records.
Boygenius - the record.
Danny Brown - Quaranta.

Saw Foo Fighters (who imo released the album of the year) and Pearl Jam live this year. Not bad at all. Also saw Cory Taylor who put on a really good show and played a few Slipnot songs, which was much appreciated.

One of my bests just happened, Billie Eilish singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas on SNL. I was blown away by her rendition. She also did What Was I Made For on SNL, one of my favorite songs of the year.

I saw Springsteen in March and U2 in Las Vegas. The only two concerts I went to, don't really need any other than those two.

And the Eras tour movie which I enjoyed very much.

Another of my best/favorite songs was I Remember Everything by Zach Bryan featuring Kacey Musgraves

My favorite pop song was probably Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo. Yes I like it

Atomic City

Also definitely one of my favourites, though hard to call it a 2023 album, is "Live in Brooklyn 2011" by Sonic Youth. What an album.
I thought there was something very endearing about "Joni Mitchell at Newport"

And I still really enjoy U2's "Songs of Surrender"

I forgot Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You by Bonnie "Prince" Billy in my favourites list.

Pretty sure I attended more concerns in 2023 than I have any other year. I was able to see numerous artists I'd never seen before, or never thought I'd be able to see. Notable highlights:

Slowdive
Pavement
M83
Pixies (twice)
Beck
The Strokes
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Royksopp
Lucius
Bon Iver
Japanese Breakfast
The Walkmen
Modest Mouse
Blonde Redhead (twice)
Dan Deacon
Will Sheff
Flaming Liips - Yoshimi anniversary tour (probably my favorite show of the year)

I'll go with a top 30 albums with a brief description of why I liked them for the top 10, followed by other end-of-year odds-and-ends.

1. boygenius: the record – Stunningly emotional, creative album of beautiful songwriting that mixes the best qualities of Julien Baker, Pheobe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Fav song – “Not Strong Enough”
2. Paramore: This is Why – Paramore fantastically meld their emo roots to post-punk textures and dance-punk vibes that will shoot through you like electricity. Fav song – “This is Why”
3. Blondshell: Blondshell – One of the best debuts of the year that fuses together endless earworm alt-rock melodies with her caustic lyrics. Riot grrrl turned singer/songwriter. Fav song – “Joiner”
4. Steven Wilson: The Harmony Codex – A brilliantly mind-bending series of songs that display Wilson’s eclectic prowess and impeccable gift for melodies. Fav song – “Impossible Tightrope”
5. Caroline Polachek: Desire, I Want to Turn Into You – Art-pop as IMAX, where she tries anything and everything, following her muse down every rabbit hole, and it all works spectacularly. Fav song – “Billions”
6. Mitski: The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We – Mitski feels more singular than ever, her voice resonant in a sparse musical landscape. A return-to-form shaped like a snowstorm. Fav song – “I Love Me After You”
7. Bully: Lucky for You - Chockful of absolutely monstrous songs, built on heavy riffs, furious vocals, and powerful melodies. There’s no weak links here. Fav song – “Hard to Love”
8. Squirrel Flower: Tomorrow’s Fire – Superb songwriting built with shuddering guitars that reflect her raw lyrical approach. It takes everything from her last two albums and elevates it. Fav song – “Alley Light”
9. The National: Laugh Track – Leagues ahead of their other 2023 LP, this album is full of wonderfully crafted songs that spiral outward unexpectedly – like marbles strewn across the floor. Fav song – “Space Invader”
10. Anna B Savage: In|FLUX – Full of poignancy, Savage proves to have one of the most distinctive, emotional, operatic voices out there today, with styles from feather-light acoustic to ultraviolet pulses. Fav song – “In|FLUX”
11. Angie McMahon: Light, Dark, Light Again Fav song - "Letting Go"
12. Miss Grit: Follow the Cyborg Fav song - "Follow the Cyborg"
13. Young Fathers: Heavy Heavy Fav song - "I Saw"
14. Avalon Emerson: & the Charm Fav song - "Dreamliner"
15. Heartworms: A Comforting Notion Fav song - "Consistent Dedication"
16. Lanterns on the Lake: Versions of Us Fav song - "The Likes of Us"
17. Worriers: Trust Your Gut Fav song - "Cloudy and 55"
18. Wednesday: Rat Saw God Fav song - "Chosen to Deserve"
19. Depeche Mode: Momento Mori Fav song - "Speak to Me"
20. Carly Rae Jepsen: The Loveliest Time Fav song - "Put It To Rest"
21. Brigid Mae Power: Dream from the Deep Well Fav song - "The Waterford Song"
22. Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS Fav song - "Bad idea right?"
23. Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, Jacknife Lee: Los Angeles Fav song - "This Is What It Is"
24. Peter Gabriel: i/O Fav song - "Road to Joy"
25. Elly Kace: Object Permanence Fav song - "Forgot My Name"

Worst album of the year: Roger Waters’s Dark Side of the Moon Redux (what a pointless monument to Waters’ galaxy-sized ego and hubris. A creatively bankrupt failure.

Most disappointing album of the year: PJ Harvey’s I Inside The Old Year Dying (I was looking forward to this one but it was just really lacking in any spark or spirit. Harvey has always crafted music that scratched the right parts of my brain and provided an emotional gut punch. This is all head, no heart.)

Best concerts of the year:
- U2 at Sphere: I saw all of Achtung Baby live in the closest environment to ZooTV that I’ll ever have a chance to witness. No show can possibly be as powerful for me.
- boygenius at Forest Hills Stadium: powerful, cathartic, and full of love - a wonderful display of stellar songwriting and beautiful friendship between these three artists.
- The Cure at MSG: I’ve wanted to see The Cure for years and they more than lived up to their legendary status. Mix of hits, rarities, and new songs – lots of tracks from Disintegration and The Head on the Door.
- The Last Dinner Party at Bowery Ballroom: get on the hype train for this band now, cause they’re going to be huge. They created a wonderful, theatrical, entrancing, thrilling noise – Kate Bush goes glam rock.
- The National at MSG: Seeing The National headline MSG for the first time was an unforgettable experience, especially when they closed with an unplugged, 20,000-plus strong singalong to “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks.”

My favorite 2023 albums.

Slowdive - everything is alive
HEALTH - Rat Wars
100 gecs - 10,000 gecs
M83 - Fantasy
Explosions in the Sky - End
Sigur Ros - ATTA
VNV Nation - Electric Sun
Slow Pulp - Yard

Big thumbs up to this post. Thank you, thank you. As someone who works two jobs, is a caregiver to his spouse, and has a beautiful daughter to look after, my time is short when it comes to sorting out my best of list, which will now be in it's 20th year!!! Much apprciated.

All in all 2023 was a pretty good year for music.

Thank you my friend. Great post

Thank you my friend. Great post

No problem! Thanks.

I hadn't put a list together in a few years but it was pretty fun going back through the new music I've discovered this year.

I'm hoping LemonMelon might make a drive-by post and give us his albums of the year. I've always found new stuff to like in his extensive year-end lists.

This is the first year where I really felt like my music listening fell off. Life got very hectic in 2023. I really do not want to be the guy in his 30s who stops listening to new music though, so I will definitely be perusing these posts to see just what I missed.

For what it's worth, here were my concerts in 2023:

Umphrey's McGee (opener: Neighbor) - The Fillmore (Fishtown, Philadelphia)
Spafford - Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia (Fishtown, Philadelphia)
Toby Leaman (opener: Depression Mom) - Johnny Brenda's (Fishtown, Philadelphia)
Cory Wong - The Fillmore (Fishtown, Philadelphia)
M83 - Franklin Music Hall (Northern Liberties, Philadelphia)
Lies - Ukie Club (Poplar, Philadelphia)
Walkmen - Union Transfer (Callowhill, Philadelphia)
Taylor Swift (opener: Phoebe Bridgers) - Lincoln Financial Field (Sports Complex, Philadelphia)
The National (opener: Soccer Mommy) - The Anthem (Southwest, Washington DC)
Blink-182 - Hersheypark Stadium (Hershey, PA)
Ed Sheeran (opener: Khalid) - Lincoln Financial Field (Sports Complex, Philadelphia)
Weezer (openers; Future Islands, Joyce Manor) - The Mann Center (Fairmount Park, Philadelphia)
Queens of the Stone Age (opener: Phantogram) - The Mann Center (Fairmount Park, Philadelphia)
U2 - The Sphere (Las Vegas)

Also missed four concerts due to illness/last minute personal conflicts:
