Bonniconlon film to be screened at L.A. festival
by Orla Hearns

North Mayo and County Sligo are to get unprecedented exposure within the American movie industry.

Black Velvet, the short film shot on location in Bonniconlon, is to be screened at the prestigious LA International Short Film Festival on October 18.

It?s a fantastic coup for the independently produced production which was filmed in the north Mayo village exactly one year ago
The movie, which is based on the controversial dealings of the oil
industry, was picked from thousands of films submitted for the high profile L.A. festival.

And following its U.S. ?premiere? Black Velvet will be screened at the Budweiser Foyle Film Festival in Derry on November 22.

It was devised and produced by the Sligo actor, Robert Barton Smith, who is Producer with Coney Island Films together with director, Simon Cathcart. The screening of the film in L.A. will provide massive exposure to the North Mayo and Sligo areas as ideal film locations to the multi-million dollar American film industry.
The crucial scenes of Black Velvet were shot in Judge?s River Inn in Bonniconlon. Roger said the pub and the village itself were perfect for portraying all that is good about traditional rural Ireland, while the plot portrays a progressive, conscientious Irish community.

The opening scenes of the film were shot at Rosses Point in Co Sligo. The Gleniff Horseshoe, Glencar Valley and several other beauty spots in that county are also featured.

Roger revealed that DVD copies of Black Velvet have been circulated to some of the world?s top movie producers including Stephen Spielberg, together with a proposal for a $40m feature film based on the short film?s plot. The proposal stipulates that the production be filmed in Sligo and Mayo.

Black Velvet?s achievements to date are most impressive when one considers how humble its origins were. The budget for a film of its kind should have been e1m. Roger and Simon, managed to produce Black Velvet for just e100,000. Much of the funding came from Roger?s own friends and contacts in the Sligo area.

He explained that he and Simon Cathcart discovered that there was a very murky history to the international oil industry and some frightening facts about the current practices therein. It was story that all those involved with the film felt compelled to tell. Consequently, some of the top names in the US film industry came on board the production for free. These included cameraman, Colm Kirby, who has worked with such renowned directors as Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick; lighting expert Ian McMillan, who has worked with some of the biggest Hollywood stars and focus puller, Bobby Dhillon who has worked with Stephen Spielberg are blown away by who came on board.

Another major accomplishment for the producers was getting U2?s permission to feature their chart topping hit ?Beautiful Day? for free on the movie soundtrack.

A special screening of Black Velvet will take lace in Judge?s River Inn in Bonniconlon on Friday, October 11 at 9.30 p.m.
