Bono and Geldof to receive music awards


Irish music legends Bono and Bob Geldof will be honoured with special awards at the Meteor Irish Music Awards tonight.

More than 20,000 people have voted for their favourite stars in this year's Meteor Ireland Music Awards, which will be announced in Dublin.

The showcase event in Irish music takes place at a sold-out Point Theatre tonight.

Stars from the world of music performing at the event include Tom Jones, Samantha Mumba, Westlife, Alabama3, Sinead O'Connor and Phil Coulter.

The event has also drawn top movie names including Colin Farrell and Patrick Bergin. Both will be presenting awards tonight, along with others including Louis Walsh, Tommy Tiernan and Bono.

Bono will also be receiving a special award tonight as this years recipient of the Humanitarian Award. He will receive a ?100,000 donation to give to charities of his choice.

Bono has chosen to give the donation to Concern and Goal.

There will also be a special award made to Bob Geldof tonight.

The former Boomtown Rat will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Awards ceremony.

He will also be performing live at the Awards.

The star-studded show is presented by comedian Dara ? Briain and begins at 8pm at the Point and the full list of award winners will be available at 10.30pm.
