Music industry stars, A-list celebrities and members of New York's cultural community are coming together tonight to honor U2 frontman BONO at the 13th Annual MusiCares? Person of the Year tribute at the Marriott Marquis on Broadway -- and ET is there!
"[MusiCares is] people looking out for their own kind, for musicians that have fallen onto hard times and stuff and hope they'll never need it -- but you never know," Bono told our own CHRIS BOOKER.
The 42-year-old, Grammy-winning artist and activist, who is being recognized for his professional and humanitarian accomplishments, is currently nominated for an Oscar? for his band's 'Gangs of New York' song, "The Hands That Built America." He is also notably in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize, alongside such names as POPE JOHN PAUL and chief U.N. weapons inspector HANS BLIX, for his efforts to fight AIDS and erase Third World debt.
"I think that somebody has just been watching the AIDS campaign and the Drop the Debt campaign," he explains. "I don't think we can win it, but it is a huge honor just to be mentioned in the same sentence as a lot of those people."
Bono joins such past MusiCares Person of the Year winners as PAUL SIMON, ELTON JOHN, STEVIE WONDER and BONNIE RAITT. The special dinner features a star-studded concert of tribute performances by some of today's biggest music stars, including NO DOUBT, NORAH JONES, ELVIS COSTELLO, GARBAGE and MARY J. BLIGE.
The event also will hold a silent auction with proceeds providing essential support for the organization's Financial Assistance Program. MusiCares ensures that musicians and music-related people have a place to turn to in times of financial, medical and personal need.
