u2songs | SPOILERS: U2eiTOUR Rehearsal Day One Report and Other Bits: April 28, 2018 |

Edit: as soon as I posted that link, the text disappeared. Here it is

SPOILERS: This article will contain spoilers for the #U2eiTOUR. If you wish to remain unspoiled please click away now. We will continue labeling things pertaining to the tour with spoiler warnings until opening night. This article will refer to songs that have been rehearsed ahead of the tour opener.

The band has arrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and we can confirm that yesterday all four visited the venue for an extended period.

The Edge arrived at the airport in the early afternoon, and posted the following to Instagram:

All four members headed for the venue in the afternoon and were seen entering but did not stop to meet with fans, or sign autographs. They were all inside the venue by 6pm Tulsa time, and remained there well into the late evening. The band has reportedly rehearsed the following:

“Love is All We Have Left” (Pre-Recorded Introductory Music)
“The Blackout”
“Lights of Home”
“Beautiful Day”
“All Because of You”
“I Will Follow”
“The Ocean” / “Iris”
“Cedarwood Road”
“Song for Someone”
“Sunday Bloody Sunday”
“Raised by Wolves”
“Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”
Intermission

“Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me”
“Elevation”
“Vertigo”
“Desire”
“You’re The Best Thing About Me”
“Staring at the Sun”
“Pride (In the Name of Love)”
“Get Out of Your Own Way”
“American Soul”
“City of Blinding Lights”
“One”
“Love is Bigger Than Anything in its Way”
“13 (There is a Light)”
Many thanks to Jason for information from Tulsa. We believe this to be a full rehearsal, and that all of the songs played have been captured.

Another spoiler for tour content was recently revealed. David Mushegain, the director of U2’s new video for “Love is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way“ has discussed that he has been working on visuals for the upcoming tour, and that he was submitting those this week. The video which debuted on Friday, focuses on the LGBTQ community in Dublin, along with others who are part of the community such as friends and relatives. It is likely that his work will accompany the song live in concert when it debuts. Mushegain was also involved with the lyric video for “You’re The Best Thing About Me“ photographing the book in the video. Directors of previous videos such as “American Soul“ and “Get Out of Your Own Way“, the street art collective Broken Fingaz, have also been working on video footage recently for the tour.

Another possible tidbit comes via TMZ. We don’t know that this will be tour related or not, but at this point as the band finishes video footage for the tour, and a previous focus on (RED) throughout the tour, we suspect it may be. While reporting on a photo of David Hogg and Cameron Kasky, two students from Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL who have been leaders in the a movement to bring change in the wake of a school shooting at their high school. The article in TMZ stated, “David’s mom, Rebecca Boldrick, tells us David has another date for the prom, and the photo with Cameron was taken during a video shoot Monday for U2’s RED campaign the high schoolers were working on.” The video could be for some sort of upcoming (RED) Campaign, or it is possible that the video will be part of the show itself as the band continues to shine a light on (RED) from the stage.

Bono has shown an interest in what the students from Stoneman Douglas High have been up to posting a number of drawings on Instagram, including a snippet of “Love is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way“ in a message to Hogg, and a snippet of “13 (There is a Light)“ to Naomi Wadler. Hogg on Twitter identified “City of Blinding Lights” by U2 as his favorite song to listen to before taking the stage to make a speech. He also revealed that one of his tweets sending out a message that the country needs love and the students will change the world was inspired by listening to “With or Without You”, “One” and “Sometimes You Can’t Make it On Your Own”. It certainly seems like an idea U2 might want to explore on an upcoming North American tour, and the band has been rehearsing both “City of Blinding Lights” and “One” in rehearsals in Laval.

U2 has also been doing a bit of spoiling themselves, and in a recent countdown video posted to Twitter a few things are revealed:

The video, set to “Lights of Home” shows several shots from inside the rehearsals done in Laval Quebec. At the 0:22 mark, Bono appears to be walking above the screen with hand rails on either side. This suggests that maybe a third elevation is now possible on the tour stage. During the 2015 tour, the band either worked below the screen, or inside the screen, but were never seen on top of the screen. We also see a few images from the screen including footage previously used during “Cedarwood Road” in 2015, and a picture of Sian, The Edge’s daughter, either from the single “You’re The Best Thing About Me” or from the album itself.

Finally we’ve also been able to give you a little further look into the tour itself revealing some additional content that will be seen during the AR experience before the main show starts. If you are interested in checking out more on the AR App and the experience that you can expect from the App please check out our earlier article, Even Better Than the Real Thing.

I'm not really a setlist snob, I try to just enjoy whatever they give me. But this set doesn't look very appealing to me. I understand they said they wanted to give JT a rest after last year, but come on... no Streets or WOWY? There's gonna be a lot of people going home thinking WTF? How about giving IWF, Pride or SBS a fucking rest instead?

I also don't agree with playing 8 songs from SOE and 4 songs from SOI... I mean, 12 new songs? That's too many, and I am one who likes both albums a lot.

I'm glad they'll have about 10 shows to work out the kinks before I see them in Chicago. My guess is these initial shows will not get a great reaction, and eventually U2 will retreat and go back to what works. I can't believe they are sick of playing Streets, but insist on playing I will follow so much. That is 1 song I could do without hearing ever again, along with SBS and Pride.

IWF was a great closer on JT30, I don't blame them for keeping it around (although I'd like to hear Out of Control or Electric Co.)

The Showman isn't in the latest setlist so that's one down.

40 years in, they’re rehearsing a setlist where 2/3 of it is from the second 20 years. The Rolling Stones they are not.

Sweet refujesus, they still can't sequence for shit.

Toss SFS for Landlady, Elevation for The Showman. Acrobat to close act 1. Bring back Streets.

This no JT songs thing is a bad idea; they don't need to start playing all those warhorses nightly, but there's a good reason they stuck around for so long.

American Soul is going to go over like a lead balloon. Red Flag Day has energy and classic vibe.

Somewhere during the tour,Streets and WOWY will come to the rescue of this horrible setlist.

No doubt I will enjoy the shows I'm going to but that setlist is terrible

All because of you :) that's up there with one of the worse u2 singles released. The same 5 songs for the i&e tour, in the same sequence in exactly the same spot. Vertigo and elevation paired together again. Pride needs a rest. The last 6 song sequence is awfull, ending on 13 aswell? That's a really rubbish way to end a concert

So that's the bad things ,The good things

Blackout, lights of home and beautiful day is a good trio to start. Always love abit of I will follow, like wild horses but cannot understand why it's in that spot on the set. Hold me thrill me is a great addition, looking forward to hearing the other new songs. Staring at the sun is ok I suppose.

The no Joshua tree song rule is ridiculous especially when there playing I will follow, Bloody Sunday and pride

You guys are a bunch of negative Nancy's

My take away from this report is that the main set is still very much in flux, and they've got a number of different songs that they're trying to rotate in and out, and we'll see a number of changes between now and opening night.

Well my 3 concerts happen in the last 9 gigs of the tour so it's going to change by the time i go :) they will realise what's happening and start playing the Joshua tree from front to back again :) unlucky America :)

Summer of love, red flag day, little things and landlady are, no joke, my favorites on Soe. And they haven’t rehearsed any of them!!

Little Things has the potential to be an absolute monster live. Putting it at the end of the JT shows, with casual fans flocking for the exit, was not the right context for that song. It should be a showcase song, possibly in the Iris spot.

So I just went to u2gigs.com and looked back at the first 10-15 setlists from the i/e tour to get a refresher how much rotation and new songs were introduced into the show. It’s pretty impressive for U2’s standards. They actually did a really fair amount of changes early on. And the 5-show stint in Chicago by 15-20 shows got crazy with Lucifer’s Hands, Crystal Ballroom, Gloria, etc. I’m not gonna go deep into detail but I think the band is going to deliver on the setlist changes and additions/ subtractions on e/i similarly. I’m remaining optimistic.

So somebody on u2start said Acrobat was attempted last night, but there were technical difficulties so they moved on. Also the reason UTEOTW wasn’t done. Apparently Acrobat will feature a Macphisto return.

Same source says a lot more has been rehearsed in secret than we are aware of...

there's a lot of shit in that setlist, but as others have said, it will change.

Streets needs a rest. So does One. Surprised so many here are so dependent on Streets. the band are bigger than one song.

Also, Streets has been shite for a number of tours now. It has lost much of its luster since its last great days of Elevation tour. Crappy cheesy Africa flags on Vertigo, overly triumphant on 360, terrible cheesy intros on I+E, and better but still 'victory dance' mode on JT30. Give it a rest and then bring it back next time around and it will erupt like nothing else in their touring history.

Holy shit, MacPhisto? Now that's great news! I doubt it would be a full return (costume and everything included), but even an appearance on screen would be pretty damn cool. And fits the song.
