If U2 perform at the Kunstmuseum and there's no Brian Eno present to hear it, did the show really happen?

That was so legendary... u2gigs needs to have an entry for that show, just so those of us who were part of it can have a quick place to look up what the setlist was. I remember they had me going for the first few songs until it got a little too ridiculous. Oddly, I remember still believing it when they played "Flower Child", which should've been a big red flag, obviously.

So if SOE is sonically more "aggressive," what do you think this means for the kind of songs we are getting?

Riff rock?
Punk/Post punk?

When I think of aggressive sounding u2 songs, I think Like a Song, Wire, Mofo, Cedarwood Road. Which are all awesome..
But I fear they're trying to pull off an album of Stand-up Comedies

Well, listening to the couple of riffs we got, the one from the Fender video, i would put more in the Wire type category, but with a classic soaring chorus. The birth of SOE clip was much heavier, and I would say had a feeling of Cedarwood, but thicker and harder. I don't really think we will be getting Like a Song type stuff.

I think there will be a mix of quite heavy or aggressive stuff (maybe a Cedarwood, Bullet, Fly or God Part II type feeling) mixed with the more classic open, "epic" soaring arena type songs...

Whatever happens, I do hope that if there are aggressive, heavier songs that they go all in. To me that is the greatness of the fly, God Part II, Bullet, etc...) I like Cedarwood Road, but they start with that killer heavy riff, and then in a mere 45 seconds, it dies away and Bono is singing about cherry blossoms. :|

when I read that description I think of Breathe.. it's all a bit in your face, until the chorus. Bit too slow to be aggressive though, I suppose

I am still hopeful that Jolyon Thomas gave them the possibility to move forward a little bit, to be more than "just U2" again - soundwise.

Pre NLOTH they wrote about "Breathe" being such a stadium rocker ... and I really don't like this song.

I also can't stand SUC

I like this distorted riff in the "SOE is being born" video .. because it does not shout EDGE .. it sounds different, which is a good sign

While the song has grown on me, and the great chorus definitely rescues it, this has always been my criticism; Edge disappearing during the verses when it could have been so much stronger.

I don't mind the lyrics, though; they're personal and evocative and actually a bit of a summation of the album's themes. Which is why I think it should have been the penultimate track, whereas TIWYCRMN is more about initial inspiration and would have been served better near the front of the album.

I still to this day say that tracks 7-11 on SOI make up a real special run and is one of the best 5 song runs of their career.

This has been my biggest complaint with him over the past decade. If he's not using his ringing bells style of playing, he goes quiet far too often in the verses.

Vertigo has a massive riff, it's up there with the chorus as far as defining the song. He goes into the scratching thing during the verse, and for this song it works OK.

But then he does it again on Boots, Miracle, Cedar, Volcano, etc

It feels lazy. I don't mind if he goes into echo bells into a song, but mix it up a bit. Best example is UTEOTW. Massive riff, it is the song's chorus. During the verses, he goes between his standard bells, and then chords which are played with a bit of tempo which continues to drive the song.

It almost feels like he steps out because he wants Adam to have moments on the song. Why can't they both like in NYD?

My hope for this album is just more playing from Edge during the verses.

I know exactly what you mean. my criticism of the Cherry blossoms, is not really about the lyrics. That lyric is fine, but because of the way the big thick, tough riff drops out, it ends up sounding kinda.... ummmm... don't like this term, but, 'sissy' comparatively. If they could keep up that sound through the song, i think it would make for a real true rocker.

Yes to all of the above.

Can we get Edge to be on fire through an entire song?

But please "The Fly", "Gone", "Last Night On Earth", "UTEOTW" fire, not the "All Because Of You" fire!

Concerning a "Single" before the SOE album release. I don't think this s happening

They might put out some sort of inspirational single around the time of the olympics, which begin in early August. Just guessing because it seems like it'd be an opportune move

I suppose i'm in the minority when it comes to All Because of You. I love the energy in that song. Some weird vocals though.
