So Kings of Leon cancelled 10 shows or something because drummer Nathan Followill needs time to recover from a tour bus accident which broke his ribs. I was going to be at one of these shows. There will be no rescheduling. If they really can't find time to reschedule these shows, what would've been the harm of using a replacement drummer for 2 weeks or whatever? I certainly wouldn't have minded.
I've seen Aerosmith with a fill in bass player, because Tom Hamilton was undergoing treatment for his cancer. While I think everyone prefers to see the full, original lineup, that is a very understandable reason for him to miss the gig, and I'm sure nobody enjoyed the show any less. Same for the Kings of Leon drummer. If it's between canceling the shows and never rescheduling them, or playing with a fill in for 2 weeks, I think most people would take the fill in.
Obviously a U2 gig MUST have Bono and The Edge. While Larry and Adam definitely have their own unique styles, they can be emulated. If Adam or Larry were in a position where they had to take some time off, I don't think I'd mind if they used a stand in, rather than cancel/postpone the shows. Would you guys mind?
The difference between U2 and KOL is that U2 would reschedule their shows. Between the pigeon shit incident of 2010, the cancelled and not rescheduled US tour in 2011 and now these 10 shows not being rescheduling, KOL seem to be set on committing career suicide. Most of the venues they cancelled in were also cancelled in 2011, and in the case of Pittsburgh, they cancelled their shows there in 2010, 2011 and 2014, same venue. Talk about throwing it all away!
Other than Raleigh in 1997, have U2 ever outright cancelled a concert? I think there was a show in Champaign, IL Zoo TV that instead was consolidated to a 3rd Chicago show, due to poor ticket sales in Champaign, but that all those ticket holders were allowed to transfer their tickets to the 3rd Chicago show.
