Beautiful Day was a fucking terrible opener.

It couldnt of been any worse then ebttrt (on that night),it really was a terrible start

The other idea would of been to start with streets. Joshua tree tour style. I know the band considered this, they said so in a few interviews.

I wonder what would of happened in 2010 if the gig had gone ahead?

The elements and almost everything else was against U2 that night. Wasn't there some problem with the soundboard and the computers as well after someone knocked them over backstage? Plus the pouring rain. I agree, it looks amazing on TV, especially the part at the end of From the sky down, but it must have been a really rocky ride for those who were there in person and for the band especially. Not their audience, a lot of hate, bad press, also very high expectations, not to mention U2 flying in and out of the US in the middle of a tour, certainly weak nerves and the hell-ish weather with the stage floor turning into ice. All odds against them. Still I think it's great they did it and if it was only for learning a lesson. U2's just not a festival band.

As someone who greatly enjoyed EBTTRT as an opener that very year, I feel sorry for all those who were disappointed by it. I was jumping up and down like an idiot to it a few weeks later. It was an awesome opener. Way, way better than Beautiful Day was early on in the tour. It's inexplicably horrible in that spot.

At least they shelved Glastonbury.

it was a great opener on the 360 shows don't get me wrong but at Glastonbury they cocked it up big time.

top 100 Glastonbury gigs

The 100 best Glastonbury performances ever - Telegraph

How the hell could U2 not even make the top 100??? I know the author of that article is trying to show how hip he is and how much CRED he has by dissing the biggest band in the world, but that's just stupid.

The UK press violently hates U2. The UK press also seems to have an unusual amount of sway over their readers/listeners. I sometimes think NME created Oasis just to have something to write about.

U2's performance was leaden and perfunctory. If we're talking about the biggest bands in the world, The Rolling Stones blew them out of the water last year and they made the list, so I don't think the author is a complete hipster. I agree the UK press give U2 a hard time, but on this occasion I think they got it right - they don't deserve to be there.

When The Wombles are in the top 100 then the poster above does have a point :)

It's ridiculous to NOT include U2 in that Top 100 list. We can argue about them deserving a spot among the top 20 or even top 30, but not including them in a list of 100 Glasto performances is simply mean. It's the typical UK media agenda. I don't want to defend the show, it had a lof of flaws, still it had its great moments. I don't take anything seriously that comes from UK media concerning U2.

Its not as bad as the top 500 songs ever list by the nme ,which didnt have one u2 song in it :)

If this Glastonbury performance is so universally derided than I'd shorten the list to a top 99 performances than to include the U2 one. It's a top list, not a list of big names who performed.

Theve had to close the stages down at glastonbury due to really bad thunder storms :) the great british summer :)

It was a good show. Considering everything. They proved they can do it without their stage, and without the comfort of their own audience, and they hadn't played a festival since ... UF era ? Wish Bono had spent the full show down at the first row of the crowd, though.

If anyone expected U2 to deliver an all time great gig with UK media's known anti-U2 feelings/the tax hate/the weather and equipment issues, good luck. They got good reviews and were voted 2nd best act.

20 Years of Achtung Baby: 5 Questions with Willie Williams They had a different setlist in mind.

It has to be said playing Streets this early was wrong.

Arcade fire were very very good last night. It has restored my interest in them !

I remember that night Morrissey performed Satellite of Love in honor of U2...

......................................

Everyones raving about metallica last night and to be fair they were pretty damn good. They were playing with smiles on their faces, looking relaxed and really enjoying it.

Take note u2 who looked like a bag of nerves at the start of the gig and it rained pretty heavy during metallicas set

To be fair, U2 didn't have much reason to smile and look happy when they were performing at Glasto. Bono's very bad at hiding his emotions.

I, like everyone else wish things had gone a little better for them. And yes, Metallica were indeed great

They were headlining the greatest/biggest festival in the world thats enougj reason to smile in my opinion

Nope. Playing the biggest festival in the world and doing anything other than making all 100,000 people swoon with its perfection is the opposite of a reason to smile in U2's brain.

Well, being a big bunch of babies about it isn't going to do much to fight the press and impress new fans.

If the reason they were so grumpy was all the bad publicity going into it, then the best thing they could've done was go out there and have a great time. Let the media know they don't give a fuck. They didn't do that.

They did fuck up Real Thing, and by they I mean Larry. He came in too early at the end of the intro solo and threw everything off. The backing track had to be turned off and the visuals didn't match any longer.

This post is coming from inside the house.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's right, it's just what is.

Most beautiful thing of all is that U2 and the Glssto staff arranged these specially built ramps for Bono/Edge/Adam to come down of and venture into the crowd or just visit the front row..
They even dumped about 100 sq ft of bark to cover up all the mud in front of the gap between front row and the stage. There was a lot of fuss about it.

T' was all for nothing , the band never used them.
