The Club Album - Will.I.Am

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I love the cold, abrasive, unforgiving sound of the War album. Dated? I dunno. But it doesn't sound like a victim of production. It just sounds bleak, wintery. I love that about it though.

EXACTLY!

It fits the theme of the album- War! The Cold War, The Troubles in Ireland, poverty, broken relationships and love amidst all of it(Surrender, 2 Hearts).

As GVOX said quite well, it isn't a sound that really is at home with U2's contemporaries as they existed in 1983.

Maybe I'm biased, as I think War is bested only by JT and AB in the U2 catalogue!

Okay, well, after reading this I have two thoughts:

1. People like the 90s remixes? Wow....

2. People think War sounds dated? I mean, maybe as much as The Beatles sound dated. But so much so that you can't even listen to studio versions? I feel very sorry for those of you.

dated means it is obviously a product of its time. it doesn't mean it's unlistenable.

War sounds dated to me, that drum sound is an 80s drum sound.. and I anticipate that the work of David Guetta, RedOne, et al will sound dated within a few years.

Oh, I cannot listen to the album versions anymore of SBS or NYD, they sound very dated. I like 'Like a Song' so I'll listen to it just because there aren't many great live versions out there...

I am pretty sure they only played the song once. It sounded pretty good-and then it went the way of many tunes.

Hmmm...don't know if War sounds dated. Personally, I think it sounds timeless...I do know that when that album hit, there was nothing else out there that was so stripped down, but still had huge melodies and singable songs. All of the other pust-punk/new wave-ish bands all had synths and light guitar. For a freshman in high-school in 1983, was was like manna from heaven

I love how the thread about the club album has quickly turned into a conversation on whether or not SBS and NYD sound dated.

Only on interference

I like the 90's Remixes. The Mysterious Ways ones anyway. The Mysterious Ways Solar Plexus Extended Club Remix or just Solar Plexus Club Remix are both just plain :drool: worthy. If they go in that direction with a "club" album then I'd be really happy. I'm not one to get all into remixes unless they're on the Deluxe Remaster. Other than that I don't really go out of my way to listen to remixes.

I know :blahblah:

I don't know if anyone's heard/mentioned this yet (apparently it was in the Knight & Day soundtrack, so it's been around a little while) but I apparently have nothing better to do at 2:00 AM on a school night, but to listen to the new Black Eyed Peas album, and I stumbled upon this track. I think this might be our greatest indication of what the club album will sound like, and suddenly I'm less nervous:

What does an ass sounds like?

Perfect.

As for the Black Eyed Peas song - from a production standpoint, that would actually be a pretty cool direction for a U2 club album to go in. Just cut the Auto-Tune and add some Edge guitar, and you're set.

Ha. That kind of statement still baffles me. What do you mean? My brain automatically thinks "... so she thinks the U2 album is going to sound like this BEP song because it has the same producer"

And I know that's not what you mean. So ... what do you mean?

It's not just the producer, it's the inclusion of Will.I.Am. as well. It's the (although novice at best) Edge-inspired guitar in the bridge. It's that general atmosphere of the beat that says, "Yeah, I could see U2 doing this song" but with better vocals/lyrics/music/existence.

It was an impression I had at 4AM. I have no idea if I'd even still feel that way were I to listen to the song again, but I found it interesting at any rate.

That wasn't meant to be a knock on you; sorry. Just that I can't wrap my brain around the concept of hearing something and tying it to U2 like that. I'm missing that skill, apparently.

;)

What can we expect on this album? Booom cha boom cha boom cha

or UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE?

I guess people beat me to the punch with their OONTS OONTS OONTS.
