What happened here? Was there a full stadium booing him, eh?

He came out to a very apathetic welcome. A couple of songs in, he went off on some half-cocked rant about how the media had been making him look bad after his outburst at the MTV Europe Awards, which immediately put the crowd off-side and he never really got them back. Plenty of heckles. He struggled with the crowd from there; only Gold Digger really got much of a positive reception.

Ah okay. Typical Kanye, and that's even before the whole "I'mma let ya finish but ..." rant.

It used to be the law that touring acts MUST have at least one local support act. Not so anymore.

So U2 had, for example, the one song Sidewinder for Popmart, and even though they had B.A.D. imported for ZooTV, they also had Kim Salmon up first. Not exactly stellar choices, and almost certainly record company, not U2, choices. So, even if that law were still in place, you'd probably still get Jay Z, just with some currently promoted Universal hoisted act on first. That could be okay, or could be complete rubbish. And if you are looking at larger local bands, Australian rock is in a pretty bad place at the moment. Wolfmother? Jet? Come on. They're awful.

If that law were still in place, I think it would be cool to have an electronic act on first (a genre where Australia is actually world class), then you have hip hop, then you have rock. You get a mini festival! I've never understood why people think a U2 support slot should be for rock acts only. That's absolutely ridiculous. Only rule is that they should be somewhat lively. It's a warm up slot. No matter what genre they are, it should be something with a bit of energy.

I'm not much of a Kanye fan, but I thought he deserved points for effort. He was trying really hard to win the crowd over, and I think Jay Z will fare far better than Kanye in terms of audience response. It's a decent booking. It adds massive hype to the tour. Don't for a second think that the U2 + Jay Z = Negative crowd will outnumber the U2 & Jay Z = Huge Event crowd.

And yeah, as someone else said, could be worse - could be Snow Patrol!

leave it to you to sum the situation up perfectly. thanks! :)

we get stuck with some rapper from jersey?
them's fighting words
Given how badly Kanye tanked at the Aussie gigs, I can't see Jay-Z going down much better. He'll probably get a reasonable response in Auckland like Kanye did, but this side of the Tasman ... how hostile Brisbane was to Kanye remains quite vivid in my memory.
he didn't go over well in Melbourne either, and i agree it is almost a complete mismatch.

but i'm stupendously excited to hear Jay-Z is supporting.
Cut Copy should have supported U2 :drool::drool:

THAT is something i definitely could have got behind.

Cut Copy is specifically who I was thinking of actually (and they're Universal.)

Australian rock? Name someone up to it. Anyone. Only one I can think of would possibly be silverchair, and Bono is very big on them too. But otherwise, who?

I'm generalising somewhat, but when I think of contemporary Australian rock, I just think of it as being utter shite.

I blame the commercial success of the feral Thirsty Merc and the mindless Wolfmother.

Some of the most prominent standard-bearers of the local scene are pretty shit, but I don't reckon the local scene overall is in the same poor state. Always seems to be something good around to me. If U2 were willing to look, not at the larger local bands, but at some exciting up-and-coming bands and hand-picked somebody who they think can handle the big stage and has potential to go much further, then we could see something really interesting. I just don't like the band bringing some established overseas mega-star down here at the expense of giving a local band a chance very rarely offered. Look at ZooTV Auckland; Bono hand-picked 3Ds, a totally left-field noise rock choice with just one album under their belt. It's perhaps no co-incidence they then went on to their most popular and critically acclaimed album the next year.

I'd just like to say I agree with this, and don't want any of my posts misconstrued to mean "I want a rock band, damnit!" Having something local of any genre on the bill is just something I'd strongly favour over this pattern of Kanye and Jay-Z - whether it's rock, hip-hop, post-metal, electronica, folk, avant-prog, whatever. I don't entirely find your mini-festival idea unappealling.

The only Oz band that'd fit the bill would be The Temper Trap, and they aren't even that good.

John Butler Trio, SILVERCHAIR FOR CHRIST SAKE. Something that would be half enjoyable, rather than making the final hour before U2 come on stage painful.

Of course this doesn't really matter.

Of course I'm not going to care about this moment in time on my death bed

Of Course u2 have the choice of who ever the hell they want to open for them.

Its just not mine, any of my family or friends cup of tea. and its put a minor dint, in whats been an awesome few days.

kindly don't quote me out of context, thanks :)

Noted (the superthread also says hi)

I just thought the situation was summed up pretty well.

read the post you had me agreeing with on ispy and thought it was in here

and like i've already said, six months ago we'd have taken u2 being supported by nickelback with no complaints.

i obviously don't expect it, but a little perspective wouldn't kill anyone.

 so thats what iSpy is. well, now I've really taken notice.

Hey, look. Honestly, I don't care who opens for U2. (nor any other band for that matter, i've seen some shockers.) I just thought maybe they'd get someone local. give an upcoming artist a shot. (which is what Bono said on the 7pm Project tonight...) and then the next words uttered out of his mouth "we're bringing Jay Z"

Immediate disappointment. But I'll get over it, go to the shows, have a blast...not caring in the end. If someone actually asked me before this week "who opened for U2 in Austraila in 2006?" I'd have to think about it for a while. I'd forgotten about Kanye. I don't mind that Empire State of Mind song....but hopefully Alicia Keys isn't coming too ;) (more likely beyonce)

Is it almost time we move into our own threads in the gathering ect forum? or do we wanna keep this sweet sexy trans-tasman (feature international guests) thang goin' on?

Muse? Worse than that black American gangster trash shit? I remember Kanye's reception in '06. Can't believe Jay-z will get any better.
wow. incredibly racist and incredibly inaccurate.

:hmm: yes i suppose we could. i don't remember what everyone did after the new us dates were announced. :reject:
