U2 on SNL Season premiere?

So, the first "ad lib" he mentions 49 (his age) and "slide" and "enjoy the slide"

Was he using his age as an excuse for flubbing the lyrics? I know the band really does not like when they do not present the perfect product, and I thought a flub on national TV like that during a song you have been playing just about every night on the tour was significant.

LOVED Ultraviolet and extremely happy for Jesse. It was great to see Jesse two times in a week (Foxborough and East Rutherford). Awesome picture with Edge!

I just (finally) watched the show, and have two obervations. I kinda liked Bono's poem recitation during MOS. Not sure whose it is, but the way Bono spoke it made it seem like it must have been with the help of a monitor. Second; based on the little bit of Ultraviolet that was shown, the DVD is going to ROCK.

You know why people hate U2...because they hate Bono...

As much as a admire Bono, the man can't STFU

As I mentioned before, for the first time I actually wished he frickin would. He completely mangled the song by mumbling through the solo of MOS and that barely coherent crap at the end of Breathe wasn't much better. The only thing I could think of was maybe he was taking a self-depreciating stab at parodying himself - maybe he read the "snippets - enough is enough" thread! In that case, it was funny.

As if it wasn't already high enough, my respect and admiration for Edge went off the charts when I watched that. How he maintained his zen-like composure and didn't haul off and crack his guitar over someone's skull after MOS is amazing. Larry could have at least chucked his drumstick at Bono for good measure

The mumbling was strange and for me didn't add anything to the performance. Mostly it's just a wtf and trying too hard. Maybe he could have said the f word and no one would have noticed, unlike that new cast member..

Did I already laugh at this? If not :zen::coocoo::applaud:

I was interested enough to try and search for the now infamous bonoguese rap text and couldn't find anything, so I decided to get old skool and do it myself - fairly sure this is close to correct - for what it's worth of course -

"Coming down broadway, turning into midtown, thinking bout saturday going down on downtown, going down on downtown, first stop rockafella plaza, this heart can't go any faster, tonight I'm 49on 49th we got Saturday still to climb . . . and if we slip, let's enjoy the slide - - enjoy the slide - Saturday Night . . Live . . . Live . . Live . .

mumble mumble, this song might be short but it's the longest thing you'll ever do, whats worse than curse the dream came true, god is a mirror image which each man sees himself, hell is a place where you don't need anyone's health, when I first met you your face was like snow, wherever I went to you wanted to go, your face, your grace, your can of mace, in a case where you put your face down, "a17" on the ground, your faith in a cloud, don't leave me now, don't leave me now, don't leave now alone in this song, oohhh, don't leave me alone in this song, ooh, ooh, ah"

I thought ". . . . is a place where you don't need anyone's help" might make more sense, but he def says Health, he really sounds out the 'th' . . .

not sure about most of the rest, but he didn't say 49+49. he said 49th, which is where Rockafeller Plaza is (one of the sides)

I just rewatched it for the first time since seeing it on the show Saturday night. I find that sometimes upon the initial watch during their tv appearances, I'm so enthusiastic, I don't really notice flaws until subsequent viewings. This time I couldn't see any. I don't get where people are talking about his voice being gravelly. *Maybe* very minimally, but barely noticeable to me, and if so, nothing more than the result of doing four shows in the previous week. Any gravelliness in his voice during MOS was a stylistic choice - he came back clear and strong for UV. I also really enjoyed the rap segments he injected into MOS, I thought it added to the song, and didn't detract from the guitar solo. I wouldn't mind if he added that part to the song permanently. Great job by the guys, overall. I thought it was a really strong performance.

This sounds like New York Part II

Well I've already noted that I couldn't disagree more and I hope it doesn't return. It's not even 'rap'.

Having said that, Edge doesn't solo alot and frankly when he does the last thing I want to hear is someone attempting a rap. At the start, the end, the bridge, anywhere else. Not during Edge's solos.

To each their own, I guess. :) I really liked it, and I generally don't like additions like that very much.

The vocal wasn't as powerful as the shows I went to, but this is far and away my favorite performance of MOS, unfortunately Bono didn't sell a lot of people on Breathe that didn't know it with that performance, I still remember how amazing it sounded on that first promo performance... if they'd been up to that level they'd be selling a lot more downloads of that track this week. But you can't blame him after so many shows in stadiums, I hope he sounds great tonight for everyone in DC!

it's not rap... it's more of a poem.

God you people are nitpicky. It was a rhythmic, rhyming sequence of spoken words during a musical interlude. Is that better?

And, as far as i can tell, it was original. The only mention of it I found on google was another site that transcribed the SNL appearance.

Just re-watched MOS.

Epic. The fact that they played that song on SNL is gleos right there.

Wish they had taken Eno's advice and had it at lead single.

And I like the rap. Straight up.

It was haunting.

When I see them perform, I want that unique performance, I don't need the cookie cutter studio version, I have that and I'll play it when I want. I want it to feel somewhat spontaneous, wondering what they'll do next, what can they do to make it their own. The performance of all 3 was very good and they're full on right now being on tour, forgive a vocal that was not perfect for godsakes!!! That's the thing about U2, they bring it like no other live and they actually give 2 shits to put some energy in. It took balls of steel to play MOS live and Ultraviolet as well, my jaw dropped and we all need to eat our words whenever we complain about setlists for sure (Your Blue Room this tour and Electrical Storm, cmon!!!!). If they do Drowning Man at some point (I wish Bono would just do a full couple of verses during the solo in MOS!!) this will be the tour of a lifetime. Finally let's not forget that they're proving something very big on this tour, they are still a stadium band even in the US and they're doing it by dropping some of the old war horses even while they're at it (IWF, NYD, PRIDE, BTBS, etc.)

Venting over, haven't posted a lot in a while and it shows. Every day we have of this band is gravy, who else survives for 33 years as a band and is still on top of their game! :applaud:

The more I think of it, this live version reminds me a lot of... Please, specifically the VMA version of Please (the last time they went on US national television and pwned everyone).
