i really like Breathe, but looking at these votes, it's way too overrated among the U2 fan base. songs like Moment Of Surrender, Fez-Being Born, and Unknown Caller (though i can understand if you just plain old don't like the lyrics) should not be falling before Breathe.

Except for Unknown Caller, I agree with this.

But I also prefer Moment Of Surrender to Fez, so I had to make sure my favorite stuck around.

this is the worst voting blunder since the American people re-elected George W Bush in 2004.

This is a sad sad day for me.

time to put on Fez/BB and go have an amazing moment in the park while the sunsets.

I honestly can't say the same thing happens when I listen to NLOTH...[yells like Caleb Folowil]

Don't know why this is such a big deal for me, but I guess it's nice to most appreciate a tune that not everybody else loves.

Fair point, but she hasn't voted in this round.

The entire song ruins Unknown Caller for me. The plodding pace, the blatant Walk On rip in the intro, the crappy, pretentious lyrics, all of it.

That's a bit harsh. I find that the deus ex machina revelation of the chorus perfectly balances the brink-of-suicide verse narration. Quite a poignant little gem.

it's similar in how he strikes the notes, but this is the first time i've ever heard of it being similar to Walk On. i think the intro is one of the best moments on this album. and i could care less about the lyrics. actually, i think it's some of his best story writing in his career.

:up::up:

the unknown caller criticisms are baffling to me. the lyrics are probably among his best ever. the chorus is a bit startling, but in a chilling way that benefits the song. i think if it were radiohead or somebody else that put it out people would be clamoring for U2 and Bono to think outside the songwriting box and do something like that.

Yeah, UC sure as hell earns the chorus. The verse lyrics are easily the darkest Bono has ever put out there. Easily.

exactly. i've always considered the "Bono's lyrics suck" argument to be a lazy reason to not like a song. it's like people randomly become english majors.

Yeah, the number of "the lyrics completely ruin the song for me" criticisms I've seen of UC is mind-boggling--especially because they're often referring to one or two tiny parts. By this line of thinking, everyone should hate Streets because of the opening lines, which are very cringe-worthy. What's that? It's the most popular U2 song? Oh, ok. I'm not crazy about a couple little lines in UC, but as mikal and popacrobat have pointed out, the rest of the lyrics are among his best ever. Add a great intro and one of their best outros ever, and you have a classic. I also love the guitar in the verses--dirty and depressing.

like, totally. "i want to run, i want to run" totally ruins Streets for me. and on Bad, when he just picks all those words that rhyme with "desolation"....let me tell you....cringe worthy. i hate U2's entire catalog.

The "at the top of the bottom/of the edge of the known universe" bit cracks me up every time. It's the closest he's ever come to progressive rock prose, and that's not a compliment. Also, the "scene of the accident" section has good intentions, but it's really poorly worded. Obviously, the chorus has been critiqued enough.

Lyrically, UC is lofty compared to, say, Wild Honey, but it's still not very good. He aims high, but it doesn't work. Give me Moment of Surrender any day lyrically.

it almost seems like you're trying not to like the lyrics. both examples you mentioned are some of my favorite lyrics on the album. and i checked with my brother in law, who is an english major, and he confirmed that they are good lyrics.

 I can confirm that too :D

I think any bias is pretty much inevitable, especially when you consider that Unknown Caller was the song I was looking forward to more than any other during leak week. What was I expecting? A song with a tempo that felt like it was at least giving the snail a run for its money, less embarrassingly cosmic lyrics, a MUCH stronger chorus, a lot of things. I suppose I should put that aside and be more objective about this, and I certainly don't hate the song -- I consider it superior to Boots anyway -- but worthy of the top 3? No fucking way. Evidently, the majority agree with me on that much.

UC is 4th on my rankings.

1. Fez - Being Born
2. Magnificent
3. Moment Of Surrender
4. Unknown Caller
5. NLOTH
6. Breathe
7. White As Snow
8. GOYB
9. Crazy Tonight
10. Cedars Of Lebanon
11. SUC
