Actually, you wouldn't know if I'm successful or not, would you? Why would you make assumptions about these things? Could it be because people who post here regularly have no life? (That's an assumption as well, you see.)

I didn't say there were not successful people here. I don't think there is anyone on this board that makes 'millions' and is as successful as U2. That was my point and I think its pretty safe to make that assumption.

You think only people who hate the song pick it apart? U2 gets picked apart across the aisle as well. The people who liked the song has already offered a thousand different lyric interpretations. They're debating if the song is in 4/4 or 6/8. They're in amazement because of the "innovative" guitar distortion and the "crispness" of Bono's voice. They're wondering if anything on the radio is better than this song---an apples-to-oranges comparison, if you ask me. They're tabbing the song on GuitarPro. They're making a dozen unnecessary remixes. Do you get my point? I figured mods would welcome all opinions and keep things fair. Seems disingenuous and hypocritical for mods to try to influence the discussion a certain way.

I am not trying to influence the discussion, I am also just posting my opinion. So what if I'm a mod, I have an opinion too, I've been a fan for 20+ years too, I love the band as much as the next guy and I should be able to speak about how I feel as well. Of course I welcome all opinions, of course I know that U2 gets picked apart by people who love the song as well. But some of negative posts here are just over the top. I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with people that don't like the song, and yes they are MORE than welcome to post that they don't like the song and why, but it would be nice if some could do so without being complete ****'s about it. Without talking about their opinions like they're FACT. Without ramming them down everyone else's throat or just saying "The song is garbage. The song sucks" without taking the time to explain why they feel that way. And I am not referring to anyone specifically, just some of the posts I've read give me this impression. If I were that adamant about keeping ALL of the discussion positive, I wouldn't allow all the negative threads now would I? Please don't imply that I'm not fair and that I dont see both sides of the fence.

:hmm: I'm not listening to the song on repeat like some of you, so maybe someone already mentioned it...
...but I think way in the background during the main riff you can hear Edge's 747(?) guitar sound (you know, Gone, Stateless), just two notes, but it's there.
Interesting :hmm: Can't wait to hear the rest of the album

I gave it a 10. Was excited by it the first time and it got better each time I played it. I also played it for some non U2 fans and they were excited by it. They heard some Beatles and Led Zep influence in it. My husband who is a musician really liked it and thought the engineering was amazing.

 Good to hear. The riff is very Jimmy Page, which is why I'm surprised that it's catching a decent amount of heat from people (I thought almost everyone loved Led Zeppelin ).

It's grown on me as well. A good sign.

It's just not very...U2, I guess. People are crying sellout. Makes no fucking sense, because Edge tweaked his guitar tone countless times during the '90s.

Exactly. Here are my thoughts from another thread: Edge has experimented with a LOT of different types of guitar-playing over the years, and arguably the type of riffing from Vertigo and GOYB is overdue. Why shouldn't he have some riffs with his name on them, in addition to his icy, brittle delay notes? The fact that you can "sing" the guitar riffs from Vertigo and GOYB is pretty cool and very unusual for U2 if you stop and think about it (or for pretty much any other band right now).

I think it will be a song that will be even better live. The "meet me in the sound" part will be great to hear in stadiums.

Also, for me, this was the first song of theirs that made me want to dance. I know there are other songs that people think are danceable, but this is the first one where I found myself moving without having to think, "hey you can dance to this one." Plus I really like the dirty sound of the guitar/bass. My husband pointed out it was the first time they've used bass distortion (Jack White anyone?)

8/10
not the sort of song that made me a U2 fan, but it's the sort of songs that helps albums from becoming too much of the same thing
+ I actually really like this one (a lot more than Vertigo or Discotheque when they were first released)

sounds great and I think the lyrics are excellent

So after after a few more listens, i now wish i could give it a zero, 0.0 for effort on this, i can't even let it play through because i know it's the end of something i really enjoyed. oh well, i guess i have a beer run song now, never thought like that before. Buzzkill, (great name by the way) you couldnt be more wrong about my obvious intentions. i've been reading this board for years, only signed up recently to get in the member area and get a link to the new single, but by registration i had it off a torrent already, that aside, the song still blows, and i even voted this time. You are not a snowflake.

I think GOYB is almost as danceable as Discotheque and Mysterious Ways. :hyper:

Man, it's WAY more danceable! Trust me, my mate played as part of his DJ set it a club here in Galway last night (illegally of course!) and the place went nuts...

Seems to be winning over the doubters here in Ireland anyway...

I love that this track is so divisive.

Some are calling it Vertigo 2.

Some that love Vertigo, hate this song.

Some are saying it reminds them of Pop.

Some hated Pop, but loves this...

I think the fact that it's so divisive and there is no universal description is a wonderful thing!!!

GET ON YOUR BOOTS!!!

Can not wait for this one LIVE. It's going to be great! I gave it a 9 on the first day, I love it and yes it is growing on me daily. I had to leave a bit of margin for myself because there are stellar u2 songs out there but hey maybe if I were to rate this on a scale of FUN rocking U2 songs this would have got a 10.

I bet the "let me in the sound..." part would've been the best part to dance to.

I'm betting on this to be the concert opener.

i'm playing it right now particularly loud - i'm going to revise my 6.5 up to a solid 7.

it's growing on me, which is the last thing i expected. i do look forward to seeing how i feel about it a year down the track.

If I keep doing this  I'm going to have serious whiplash.
I'm loving it. :hyper:
I feel for those that don't feel the same. Well not really that much.
But there's no lack of music out there. Find something.

I'm in the same boat...when I played it today I completely heard it from a different angle, and really started to appreciate it--which was a complete surprise. It may be the best straight ahead rock/punk thing they've done. It's not exactly 'tuneful,' but it's got a weird psychedelic energy thing happening.

I give it an 8...an 8 that's gaining momentum.

I gave it a 9 a few days ago, and still stand by that.

GYBO makes me happy.

i gave it a 7 and stand by it. but my standards are very high. only "Bad", "Zooropa", and "WTSHNN" get 10's for me. so by giving it a 7, i'm saying that i think "GOYB" is  and getting better each day. :)

Does anyone know why iTunes wont let me make GOYB into a ringtone?

I don't know ,but I find it much easier to just download a program to make your own ringtones, or use something like mobile17. I have an iPhone and downloaded a free application that is quite easy to use and get my ringtones just like that.

Already made my Boots one.
