They don't finished it because Bono likes to PARTY!!!!
The 90s were a never-ending party for Bono and the rest of U2, still they managed to finish some decent albums.

I think they finished the album and didn't like the final result. Be prepared fro POP part II...

POP part II would be if they rushed it and released what they had right now. HTDAB is what you get if they go back and give themselves time to toy with it.

I think point 1 is the weakest. We know that the "50-60 songs" really means nothing in light of the "100 songs" from ATYCLB. But overall, given the quality of songs apparent in the beach clips, I agree with your main point.
I also think U2 is at a point where anything less than a Number 1 album around the world (especially in the US) will be considered a failure. And they are old enough/far enough along where that could be tough for them to deal with. If they get knocked off the pedestal now (or are seen as having been knocked off) then there is pretty much no way they will ever get back there...no matter how good their future albums are. There are plenty of bands that release albums as good as U2's last couple and are relatively unknown. U2 is enormous but they won't always be. I think this is probably the last album where U2 can be looked at as (using Bono's phrase) "relevant". I think they want to maintain the status they re-achieved in 2000 with Beautiful Day for as long as possible...which is likely through 2011. After that the earliest we'd see an album/tour again would be 2015 and they'd all be around 55 years old. I think they did the math and realized that, no matter what, they may be up against forces much too large for them to overcome at that point.
I really think this album, when it is finally released, will blow minds! I broke down and listened to those new "beach clips." Even with the terrible sound, there's some mighty interesting stuff being played. If this is a hint as to what the new album will be, I'm very
excited.
maybe "mercy" isn't finished yet...........
I think the album is done, but I don't think the delay is for fear of competition. I'm more likely to think it's due to a more personal issue. Perhaps someone's health, or any of a million reasons why they don't want to go into active promotion mode just yet. That's my theory....
I agree with you. Also, maybe this is farfetched, but they might not want to release it around the time of the U.S. election.....
Also, when planning their schedule for the next few years, it might have made more sense to delay the album until 2009. They most likely have their schedules mapped out way in advance....
There won't be a Pop II, and that's a good thing.
I wish Bono would stop caring about being relevant.

This doesn't make sense.
I think consideration needs to be made for the fact that in the past they have written '50-60 songs' for a release, but only actually developed an albums worth. The others become forgotten demos, rarely revisited because they keep writing when they start up again.
So Long as its not ATYCLB Part III. We'll be fine.
I'm still waiting for the promised ATYCLB part II myself...and I wouldn't mind if they had an absolutely great pop album that they tried the last two times.
