Me At London gig yesterday with my hands full :giggle:

As far as health care goes, I certainly do NOT want to sound like an apologist for politicians. As one of the millions of students without insurance, I go without most of the time because of financial concerns (I'm overdue for some major tests but I simply can't afford them...or rather I refuse to pay outrageous prices for them...).

The farce that is our healthcare system today traces its roots back to the early decades of the 20th century...during the Depression companies were short of cash and they looked for alternative ways of compensating their employees. Health insurance developed as a cottage industry and alternative to salary increases...not necessarily b/c business owners were evil, but b/c it seemed like a good idea at the time. Of course, it grew to be big business, and now you have evil doctors, evil doctors' lobbies, evil evil evil pharmacutical companies, and all of them with tons of cash. Cash that often finds its way into the hands of stupid, impressionable, ambitious politicians.

My advice...partly inspired by Bono's pragmatism, partly by my own knowledge of politics...is to start by investigating the politicians. There are several non-partisan watchdog agencies and organizations that do nothing but keep track of congressional activity. You can find out who is getting money from who, where they are spending it, who they are visiting and why, what speeches are getting made (or not made), what bills their names are appearing on (or not appearing on) and so forth. Most politicians are far more decent than the press makes them out to be, and most actually do get into politics with the hopes of helping people, ESPECIALLY at the state level. State politics is often and grueling and thankless job. But that's where I would start. If that helps.

Thank you E! That is alot of help. I think I'm gonna just start reading stuff on the internet. I've even been considering taking a goverment/political science course at the local college to learn more. I don't think I know enough about how our goverment works. If I'm gonna speak up, I want to make sure that I'm doing it in the right manner.

SG my mom always called me her "little hippie" and my father in law still calls me Hippychick. :giggle: I wear it as a badge of honor. Its how I've always been. My mother said I came out of the womb going against the grain and have never changed. hehe When I was very little I wouldn't wear anything, but black and would not respond to my given name. *sigh* I was such a pain in the arse even then.

the funny thing about that is the only other nickname I had was from when I was young and my Dad and Mom called me 'the streak' cuz we lived in the middle of nowhere and I HATED to bother putting on clothes. I was a nudist child (Something I have in Common with Adam :hyper: :giggle: )

theresaeverard@aol.com

Have you read my Bono Porn??

:lmao:

Yes, at least the one.

this is a long-running soap opera of a fan fic I've had going, but I can send you the one chapter if you want. It's not nearly as smutty as most love scenes because Larry and Simone have been together for awhile by this time. I'll send it through if you want to check it out though

what dya mean? you'd fit in perfectly with me and russty! :D Don't you know we're loco?
:coocoo:

Oh we are so coocoo its not even funny! There's nuts and then there is SG and I. Fruit loops is more like it! :giggle:

SG YOu don't know how much I love you for updating!!! I was awake at 3 am reading really really horrible fanfic. Total crap! I was so wishing I had better stuff. It was so bad I ended up giving up on good stuff and actually started working. :giggle: I also found out that people don't really appreciated blaring Bono at 3:30 in the morning. They were at least nice enough to wait till 5 am to complain.

E I totally understand where your coming from. I want to know why the heck America can't have a govermental run health care program like in Europe and Canada? I hate not being able to be treated when I'm in desperate need because of money. If countries that are supposedly worse of then us can do it why can't we?

You know what they say, a squeaky wheel gets the grease!! And Bono's example is quite good, b/c he knows (after lots of practice) that simply standing in a picket line isn't going to get the job done. You always need people in the line certainly, but more importantly we need people who know how to play the game and what the rules are. Bono's success isn't due to vague protesting, but because he got his hands on Bobby Shriver's rolodex and starting making calls, including calls to people he knew would be against him. That's one smart cookie.

That said, I often wish I had more of a hippie in me. It's in here somewhere, but often disguised in a real individualist conservatism (as true conservatism is, more than anything, about staying ruthlessly true to the individual). My dad is a biologist, so I've always had opinions on the environment, but I'm usually very quiet on most everything else. I'm more like the bookish looking secretary who secretly rearranges stuff while the boss is away. Subversion from the inside.

E you didn't nerd us out! I just need to not get on my soap box today cuz It'll just make me feel sick to my stomach again. I abhor America's health care system, but it's so fatally flawed and the government being what it is I don't envy the person who actually tries to reform it, either
