Songs of Experience - Let The Chart Speculation Begin

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
iTunes isn't the be all and end all of album sales though, no doubt they only have to sell a few to move places etc

True enough. I noticed that it was number 1 on the Sainsbury's chart but 5 in Asda

10 on iTunes now :-(

Regular version is 32 so if u put the 2 together it would go back I suppose

True, it's all been very low key by their standards promoting this album over here though, I know I keep banging on about it but an ad during the break is not enough,

Is it any wonder the album isn't selling well, they've virtually ignored the UK on their last 2 tours, unless of course you live in londonland, and on top of that its not really all that good is it, lets be honest

Eh? The album is brilliant

I’m guessing you haven’t read the comments in this forum. Probably 90% of posters here like/love it. Granted on the other side of the forum that number is closer to 50% but this topic is in EYKIW.

U2 fan feedback seems to be overwhelmingly positive

Critics are mixed(although there are posters that will single out a single negative or positive review as proof it’s bad/good)

General public....remains to be seen yet.

There just isn't big demand for new u2 music here. I'd say in general u2 have never been perceived as bad as they are now, especially Bono. The paradise paper leak the week before the record came out hasn't helped either. Bono was in the news a lot about it and the general opinion of him is rock bottom. Add in the bad press off the soi release, the fact that it isn't really being promoted here. Sales were always going to be low in the uk and they will never sell many records here again

Unless they actually show the UK a little more attention with some PR, but that isn't looking likely bar the BBC thing, which in all fairness people can easily turn off or decide not to watch because it's u2, they needed to do things to prove to people they are still good without actually giving them the chance to turn it off

They did they dumped the last record on 500 million iPhones :)

They seem all a bit needy to get noticed in America don't they? Aside from topping up a US heavy Joshua Tree with more dates for their Experience and Innocence tour, they can't seem to keep themselves of fairly generic late night tv chat shows presented by some bore called Jimmy.

Billboard: "U2's 'Songs of Experience' Heading for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart"
https://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/8061704/u2s-songs-of-experience-heading-for-no-1-on-billboard-200-albums-chart

U2 is on track for its eighth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with the rock band’s latest release, Songs of Experience. Industry forecasters suggest the effort -- which was released on Dec. 1 through Interscope Records -- could earn over 170,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Dec. 7.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new Dec. 23-dated Billboard 200 chart (where U2 could bow at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Dec. 10.

Songs of Experience is a companion album to the band’s last studio effort, 2014’s Songs of Innocence. The latter title was initially released as a free download exclusively through Apple’s iTunes program on Sept. 9, 2014, but was not eligible to chart until it was commercially released on Oct. 14. In its first tracking week of sales, it sold 28,000 copies, and debuted and peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200.

U2 last topped the Billboard 200 with 2009’s No Line on the Horizon, which bowed with 484,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen Music. (The Billboard 200 transitioned to a consumption units-ranked tally in late 2014.)

In total, U2 has led the Billboard 200 with: No Line on the Horizon, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2004), Pop (1997), Zooropa (1993), Achtung Baby (1991), the Rattle and Hum soundtrack (1988) and The Joshua Tree (1987).

Also on tap for a sizable debut on next week’s Billboard 200 is Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2. The country singer’s new album could launch in the top three of the list with over 125,000 units. It’s a sequel to From A Room: Volume 1, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 earlier in 2017 with 219,000 units.

Very encouraging report from Billboard. Fingers crossed for Sunday!
