Can you imagine Jordan saying this?
To his friends, yeah, not to the press.
You know, an asshole is an asshole, but, I wonder how much Jordan's hoops history vs Quitness' has to do with things. Jordan was not a teenage hoops god. He was a McDonald's All American as a senior in HS but prior to that he was nobody. He played college ball at a historic program with an already legendary coach, on a team with cats like James Worthy and Kenny Smith and Sam Perkins and Brad Daugherty, so he had to have learned early on that he wasn't the only big fish in the sea...and he had his time with Coach Knight leading up to and through the 1984 Olympics, and whether you love or hate Coach Knight, he's a perfect tonic for anyone with too big of an ego. So I just wonder if Jordan, despite his individual brilliance and insane competitive drive, had the value of team and teammates drilled into his head by the time he arrived in the NBA.
Lebron of course has been considered a hoops god since he was a teen. Slimy hangers-on and Amateur coaches have been whispering in his ear since he was a child. He becomes a millionaire at 18, etc. He grows up in an ESPN dominated era where I is definitely valued more than we.
That being said, you can stay in college for 4 years and still come out as a me-first clown, I get that.
Nothing about how a person's personality is shaped is black and white, and, maybe James' DNA is such that he's very me-first and would be so in any circumstance.....but his path to the NBA has done nothing to help, let's put it like that.
