Yeah Acid Rain is easily my favourite track. I had it on a DI list a little while back. Its beat immediately reminds me of Outkast's Elevators and the lyrics are terrific. I have done acid and had a bad trip and will never touch it again, but this song's about a lot more than that. There's also the heartbreaking meditation on his good friend's death and the yearning to better himself in the second verse. I love it an awful lot. My other fav tracks are Chain Smoker (just amazing coming right after Acid Rain, it's so joyous) and Good Ass Intro. Fuck it, imma listen to the album (it is a mixtape, yeah) now.

Yeah you should. I keep getting interrupted listening to it, yet to make it to the end, and it's very different to Acid Rap (it's a much more collaborative effort, hence why he isn't mention in the artist title) but it's great. Impy loves it and it got good reviews.

I listened to Surf today. It's pretty good, not at all what I expected. I do wish there was a little more of Chance on it but I also understand it's not a "Chance the Rapper album" either.

There wasn't much that hooked me right off the bat the way that Acid Rap did, but man it's dense. I hear 90s R&B, 80s pop, a bunch of different jazz styles, and some interesting experimentation in the production. Unfortunately I couldn't focus a lot on the lyrics (I was at work) but it's definitely worth another listen when I can actually pay close attention to what's going on. I feel like you need to focus on this one to really get what the words and music are saying.

I liked it on my first listen but also got the vibe that it's one of those albums I'll come to enjoy more and more as I hear it.

Not even going to lie, I would be a huge Chance fan if I liked the sound of his voice even a little bit. I fucking hate it. The lyrics are good and the beats are great but he's got that raspy babytalk flow. Granted, I had similar issues with Kendrick's affectations and got over it. Just not with Chance yet.

Surf is very good and I enjoyed it much more than Acid Rap because of all the features.

I think that's partly why I enjoy Acid Rap so much. It's a long way from perfect but it actually sounds different and refreshing because of his voice and the little affectations. Unlike many of the hip-hop albums I listen to throughout a year, it actually sticks with you.

I'm sure you've heard Elevators, Dave?

It speaks volumes for my head space right now that I got emotional listening to the start of Good Ass Outro just before

I've been listening to Madvillainy quite a bit lately, so I was looking for something else by Doom. Vaudeville Villain is really good, though it seems the guy uses a new moniker for every project he has.

He's had quite a few, most of whom get mentioned on Madvillainy. On "Fancy Clown" he raps the first verse, heartbroken, as Viktor Vaughn and then switches into a hypocritical, unapologetic, violent DOOM for the second.

So what's good from this year aside from Kendrick?

Nothing. To Pimp a Butterfly is the best hip hop album in at least 20 years.

Lupe, Ghostface & BADBADNOTGOOD, Vince Staples and Earl Sweatshirt all put out albums of high quality. Not anywhere near Kendrick, but worth hearing.

Joey Bada$$ and A$AP Rocky also put out decent projects.

I take that "nothing" back, this song by A$AP Rocky is decent, and I dig the video (it ain't far off):

I may have been very drunk and listening to TPAB while writing that post. Shit happens.

Oh well I take it right back then. I am extremely prone to hyperbole when drunk.

Yeah I heard that one. Very indebted to Miles, which is always a good thing IMO. The lyrics in places are a bit after-school-special, though.
