Could not see that coming....

And Chicago issues stay at home order effective Monday.

Only leave home for essentials. Stating thanksgiving plans should only include members of immediate household.

Strange that they ended the whole cruise over one positive case.

Not that that’s not the right thing to do... of course it is. But surely they knew the odds of not having one case if they promised testing was very low

Given how things are going there may be like 17 COVID-free people in the US by the time the vaccine is ready for deployment.

Look at the bright side... no issues finding enough rona to make sure the vaccine trials can get a good test.

I get that there is a spectrum of risk that different people are willing to take, but for the love of God who feels a desperate need to go on a cruise now? During the best of times they are floating cesspools. And even if you think your odds are low, why on earth would you want to risk possibly being quarantined in a room of like 175 square feet?

cruises aren't that far off from casinos, in that both industries live and die on the customers who come over and over.

my parents have friends who don't go on any vacation that isn't a cruise, and go multiple times a year without fail because they LOVE cruises. they're just random middle class people from suburban canada. i'm sure the cruise lines had no problem filling up this ship or any other future ships with folks like my parents' friends, no matter how many people get sick.

Some of the numbers are mind boggling. 1 in 82 people in North Dakota has tested positive in the last 7 days. 7 days!

Yep.
I have an aunt & uncle who live in Miami who go on several cruises a year. They are in one of these last minute groups that the cruise line contacts when they have unsold cabins and they can go for dirt cheap. Being retired and living in the city that many depart from (and close enough to Fort Lauderdale where many others depart from) they take advantage of this often.
But they also cruise other areas of the world, have probably done basically every cruise route there is over the years.
But they are currently waiting for the 'rona to get under control before going on their next trip.

An article in the New England Journal of Medicine about how one NYC area hospital prepared for the influx of COVID patients. You may recognize one of the authors.
