Get Out of Your Own Way

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Does anyone else half expect a trembling, geriatric voice to sing the chorus right after Bono sings: "And Lincoln's ghost says..."?

Weakest song on the album for me. American Soul has aged pretty well in the context of the album and The Best Thing has a decent enough hook and a delightful enough Edge cameo to be given a pass.

GOOYOW is the most obvious hitz grab. Hitbait?

Worst song on the album. My gut reaction to the initial seconds we heard of the Mexico video shoot were correct.

I still really enjoy this tune and consider it to be one of the better songs on the album.

Good to hear Cosmo... doesn't do anything for me. It isn't offensive like SUC, Crazy tonight or Crumbs. But maybe it would have been better if they didn't shoehorn in that political verse in there. Also, the godawful vocals in the live performances did not help much.

I was a bit "meh" on me at the beginning, but it's grown on me a bit since then. The lyrics and Edge harmonies stand out a bit more and even with the Beautiful Day bass and synths, its a decent enough tune.

Overall, it was probably a right choice for a single, even though it basically repeats the G-A-D-Bm riff used in The Best Things' chorus. But that's the sort of thing it's built for anyway and would probably grab a few more listeners that way.

Yeah maybe it'll regrow... like a weed, because I am not giving it more chances than I already have.

This and American Soul nearly kill the album’s momentum for me. Lucky that the rest is strong enough to overcome these low points.

It’s not even like I hate this song. I personally just think it’s a lazy, paint-by-numbers U2 track.

If it wasn't a single, I'd rave about the song. It's a good, catchy song. I just wish it wasn't the best single, which is embarrassing by U2 standards.

:applaud:

One of the few worst things they've ever recorded, recycling their own hits and overstuffed lyrics on the verses. Plus the obnoxious pop touches.

Permanently axed from my playlist.

I would axe the best thing and this one from the running order, bring SOL and RFD at three and four, followed by AS, the Showman and then its all good

Probably the weakest song on the album, which annoys me as they seem to be playing/promoting this song more than the others. SOE has so many gems - this shouldn't be the song that most non U2 fans associate with the album!

Still, it's not a bad song by any means.

I have little doubt that Summer of Love will be the 3rd or 4th single once spring comes

Why does it bother everyone so much?

I find the fact that like five songs on the album have a chorus that is the song title - get out of your own way!

Exceptionally awful with the long titles.

Bad / AIWIY / The First Time are all musically similar apparently, doesn't stop me from liking all of them.

Eh... Get Out and Beautiful Day share some undeniable similarities. So much so that it's sort of clear that U2 was channeling their prior material.

I don’t care what anyone says. This song is great. When the 2nd chorus comes in after the “Your Fight”, it’s hard not to just belt it out.

I'd like to "belt out" the band members for subjecting us to this garbage.

But yeah, to Mikal's point the song isn't a car crash and it is a good reflection on this album that there is no real consensus (yet) about what the best song is, while the weak songs are not rubbish.

That is my favorite part of the song... but actually because I feel like Bono goes seamlessly through it with some fantastic flow.

As for wanting to belt out... I do! The problem, and I feel like this is the biggest problem with the song... belt what out? This song desperately needs its cialis, because when the moment's right, it's not ready.

Yes, I mean it depends on how you judge it. If you're going to judge the song by how catchy it is then yes I agree it is a good song and I am temped to belt it out. However, it does lack in the areas of creativity and originality as it is practically just a re-mix of previously recorded pieces. They knew those pieces were successful so they just stuck to that formula instead of trying to come up with a new sound or trend.

I think that the reason some people are upset with U2 is that they no longer seem to be the trend setters that they once were and instead are trying to copy whatever is popular on the radio. For example, Coldplay got its inspiration from U2 and modeled their music after them but if you listen to a song like "EBW" now you hear U2 copying Coldplay. What has happened here?

I honestly do not get this criticism.

So U2 have inspired other bands, who often sound like U2. And then when U2 continue to sound like U2, they are now allegedly copying these other bands?

This is a lazy, shallow criticism that makes no sense and is unfortunately all too popular in the music press.

I have lots to criticize the band about, but not this.

Does it bother anyone in this thread that GOOYOW is so heavily borrowed from Beautiful Day and City of Blinding Lights? It's VERY close!

It bothers me a great deal that they lifted the beat from BD for this song. Really takes me out of it entirely.

When I hear this song all it does is make me think of BD (not good) and then how I'd rather be listening to BD (definitely not good).

When a song forces you to compare it to a superior song with every listen then I'd say it was tremendous blunder on their part.

And why? Why oh why would they do this?
