Bowie was right! There IS life on Mars! Well, Newc
Sorry if this one's been posted before, but I'm skint and am not a Premium member (yet). So, I cannot use the search function.

Anywho, I've always thought that this song was about Larry. First of all, I've read somewhere that his nickname is babyface, because of his obvious deal with the devil. But there are also lyrics in the song that make me think of him:

"How can beauty be so kind, to an ordinary guy."

"Watching your bright blue eyes in the freeze frame."

There are several lyrics in there that make you think it's a girl, but I've always thought this song was about Larry. And I guess any song is how you interpret it.

Hmm, not sure about this one. I think if Bono ever said to Larry, "Let me untie your lace", he wouldn't be able to run fast enough.

yeah, the song continues the early nineties fascination U2 had with mass media...

babyface is definitely about a guy romanticizing a woman in a pornographic film on television.

Any doubt that he is watching television is settled by the imagery he uses:

Watching your bright blue eyes

In the freeze frame

I've seen them so many times
I feel like I must be your best friend

and especially this part:
(imagine him holding a remote control)
Coming home late at night
To turn you on
Checking out every frame
I've got slow motion on my side
Turning around and around
With the sound and colour
Under my control

Open the door, let me unpack my case
You're everywhere child
You're all over the place
(she is either famous or her films are watched all over the place)
You're coming to me from outer-space
(as in satellite television)
Hou could beauty be so kind
to an ordinary guy
(she can't see him. she is an image on video)

interesting note:
I have always thought that this persona bono is taking on is similar if not the same as the one in fast cars

I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news
To get to know the enemy

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your face in a locket
Picture in my pocket
I take a pill to stop it

BOTH SONGS:
are about a man who has lost touch with the real world as a result of modern technology and his reliance upon it.

just like at the end of fast cars:
i'm not used to talking to somebody IN A BODY

both of these songs seem to feature a man who has become afraid to venture out and find real human contact because it is easier and less frightening to stay in and shut himself off from the world.

Well, when you put it that way... I don't think the song was written about Larry, but some lyrics do apply sort of. If you get me here.

I thought it was about a regular guy having a crush on a celebrity female.

She could be a model,a girl from a commercial, face on the front page of Vogue or Cosmo-girl,famous actress....doesn't matter.....The point is similar as that in Fast cars;man loses the distinction between fiction and reality in a world reliant on the mass media which, bringing the world within arm's length ,actually make it more distant-producing an isolated individual seeking artificial pleasures and surrogates.

Somehow, I always also pictured U2's closeness/friendship with so many beautiful supermodels, especially since the AB era . . . with Naomis and Helenas and Christys hanging around all the time, it's like Bono feels like the ordinary guy (since he admits to some insecurity, as we all have, really) amidst all these beauties . . .

I've always thought that it's a song about a guy who's in love with an actress or some other celebrity.. the whole business of blue eyes in the freeze frame and remote controls.

(though the line "watching your bright blue eyes in the freezed frame, I've seen them so many times I feel like I must be your best friend" is clearly a reference to me watching far too many U2 vids and dvd's.)

:lmao: Me too! Haha!

Tinfoil hair

okay this is an old thread but I have a question relevant to Babyface.

What do you think "tinfoil hair" means?

Because I think of when you put highlights in your hair you use tinfoil.

Or maybe it just meant her hair was really shiny?

that's the reason why I love this song so much! I spend hours in front of a pc or tv to watch The Edge (a celebrity that I will never meet!) :cute::D

IMO this song is much deeper than everbody thinks... this is a very personal and private song, one that puts the likes of "with or without you" and "vetigo" to shame. It is, in fact, about Bono watching footage of himself... a real disgusting ego trip.

Clue 1:

Watching your bright blue eyes
In the freeze frame

Not many people know that Bono has blue eyes that could even be described as... bright.

Clue 2:

I've seen them so many times
I feel like I must be your best friend

Most people know that Bono is his own best friend.

Clue 3:

You're looking fine, so fine, oh my
Dressed up like a lovely day, oh
Babyface, babyface
Slow down child, let me untie your lace

Enough said.

Clue 4:

Cover girl with natural grace

Bono has covered songs originally sung by women, and, as all who have been to a U2 show can attest, he is also known for his natural grace.

Clue 5:

How could beauty be so kind
To an ordinary guy

I guess Bono probably has a clone somewhere that is living an ordinary life, which this lyric cleverly alludes to.

Clue 6:

Coming home late at night
To turn you on

Um well I'm pretty sure Bono has a home... again obvious but it's worth mentioning.

Clue 7:

Checking out every frame
I've got slow motion on my side

His super power is slow motion, which he has cleverly referenced here.

Clue 8:

Tin foil hair all tied up in lace

He's referring to tin foil hats, an object of fashion that a large number of his fans are prone to wear.

Clue 9:

You're everywhere child
You're all over the place

When a new U2 album is out, Bono is on every newspaper, magazine, storefront tv, condom and roadsign on the planet. A clever reference.

Clue 10.

You're coming to me from outer-space

Refers to the common rumour that Bono is a martian.

Wow:ohmy:!!!This is the first time that I read the lyrics of babyface that way.
