Looks like the American and British audiences rightfully ignored this worthless track, despite the band trying to shove it down their throats on multiple large platforms (SNL, the Grammys, live at the BBC, MTV EMAs).
The song sucks. It was a terrible choice for a single. Case closed.
Agree. I just don't get who in the band signs off on these songs? I still think TBT was appropriate first single since they would have been mental to go with another RAWK song.
Unless that RAWK song was Red Flag Day, as it sounds fresh and nothing like the previous three singles.
But Get Out ranks up there with Song for Someone for me (albeit I do enjoy 13) as some of the worst U2 songs they've done. It's them on autopilot, which is what I'd say Edge has been on since NLOTH.
I blame Spiderman, as in one of the interviews Edge (or Bono) discussed how it was creating that soundtrack that really changed how they approach songwriting now. It's all about hooks, and having to be tight....
and that's my biggest drawback with SOE. It's just too tidy. While U2 have never really been experimental, it was more the unique sound of the band trying to create pop songs that was the experiment. That space, that U2ness seems to be gone. Not 100%, as there are a lot of glimpses here and there, but their quest for the perfect pop song has kinda soured it.
Songs like Invisible, Little Things, SOL, and Landlady are all songs that could really stand to be another 30-60 seconds longer. Either another verse, or another chorus....or Edge playing a non SFS solo for once.
Anyway, let's see how these songs turn out live.
