Plans for the new song

I kind of feel like they might release the new single on december 1st for the release ... and they've just been really hush hush about it so its a surprise? It would be so U2-ish to release their new single to promote this new (RED) service. It won't happen, but a girl can dream!

First of all that article said that users will receive an exclusive song every week from an artist...it could be any artist that is involved with the service and any week....it doesn't have to be December 1st.
The article said that U2 recorded their song just last Wed. November 19th,2008....something recorded so quickly and so recently would not be their new single.

I think that the song U2 may have recorded is that "Stand Up" song that Bono had just written last month...that makes sense because it is related to the AIDS campaign and I really don't think anything from U2's new album would be offered for that service...it takes away from their album sales, the record company wouldn't want that...U2 will give the service B-side type material or cover songs...not their A type material if it's as good as they think it is.

Well, I'm sure people who don't subscribe to this service will be whining to get the
song(s) U2 puts in whether it's "A" or "B" material.

 You might be right about "Stand up".

And yes, nowhere does it say that U2 will release the song on December 1, though I think it would be a landmark date, World AIDS day and the launch of the (RED) music store, something Bono has helped develop, so I don't see why they shouldn't be among the first artists to release a song for that.

I'm sure Bono is eager to get a good song out for this campaign, not some cover. I am very curious about this new song.

Coldplay, R.E.M., Dylan, U2 Fight AIDS With Songs | Pitchfork

Some very big artists are banding together to help fight the very big problem that is the AIDS epidemic, and if the tagline sounds familiar, the songs these folks have contributed won't: Coldplay, R.E.M., Bob Dylan, and U2 are among those who have contributed exclusive tracks to (RED)WIRE, a new digital music magazine from Bono's AIDS-combatting (RED) campaign.

(RED)WIRE is due to launch December 1, aka World AIDS Day, according to a Billboard.com report. Those who subscribe can look forward to a weekly issue of the e-zine, packed with a previously unreleased song from a "major" artist, a second song from "an artist (RED) aims to showcase" ("minor" artist?), and a "multimedia piece" detailing (RED)'s charitable efforts. And yes, all proceeds from RED(WIRE) subscriptions go directly to the cause.

In addition to the aforementioned, the initiative will also introduce exclusive offerings from the Dixie Chicks and John Legend (covering Bob Marley's "Redemption Song"), plus a recording of tourmates Elvis Costello and the Police playing together on the former's TV show, and another Christmas benefit track from the Killers, this one called "Joseph, Better You Than Me" and featuring Elton John and Pet Shops Boys' Neil Tennant. Nice!

There's also talk of having artists curate particular issues, with Jay-Z among the prospective participants. And even if your hard drive is too stuffed with porn and anime bootlegs to accommodate any weekly multimedia e-zines, you can always lend a hand to (RED) by going here.

Exclusive = not on the new album.

Smells like a cover song to me. Something like Instant Karma for the Save Darfur campaign or The Saints are Coming for the New Orleans Music Rising project.

Still, if it would be an original song, it would be pretty damn cool.

i'm very curious also. i would be surprised if they released come random crappy song with the new album coming so soon.

do i dare say we could hear the new single next Monday? :hmm::|:wink::ohmy::hyper::drool:

If U2 release something it's not gonna be the single

It'll be at best a b-side

Which ain't bad right?

Or maybe it'll be Mercy

Why should it be a cover song? Maybe Bono has written a song exclusively for this event. He has known about it for some time.

Instant Karma was a cover song because it was for an album with Beatles covers. Saints was great, U2 and Greenday made the song their own. Still I want to have NEW U2 material for this.

Btw, I've been to the (RED) Wire site and there are a lot of artists listed and some can be seen in the interview, but U2 isn't one of them. It's also interesting that they've been able to keep the title of the song they're doing secret. I guess we're in for a surprise.

New song on Dec. 1st?

I didn't see a thread for this yet, so sorry if it's already being talked about somewhere. U2 recorded a new song last Wednesday, and it looks like it may be available next week.

According to Billboard today:
"U2, Coldplay, the Killers, the Dixie Chicks, John Legend, R.E.M. and Bob Dylan are on board for the initiative, which is an outgrowth of the Bono-reared activist organization (RED). All proceeds from subscriptions will benefit HIV-infected people in Africa; MSN.com will host a kick-off party on Dec. 1.

For $5, users will receive a new issue of RED(WIRE) every Wednesday, featuring an exclusive song from a major artist, a song from an artist (RED) aims to showcase, a multimedia piece that could encompass video or photography and a look at how proceeds are directly benefiting Africans in need. The materials will be downloaded to a custom player and automatically loaded into iTunes.

Users can send two free issues to friends, and will be rewarded if they join RED(WIRE). "Artists are already saying, 'I want to give you a track for those people who brought friends in,'" (RED)WIRE founder Don MacKinnon tells Billboard.com. "That's the biggest idea: using social networking to actually change the world in a unique way."

U2's track was recorded just last Wednesday, while the Killers, Elton John and the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant teamed up for the Christmas song "Joseph, Better You Than Me," which MacKinnon describes as "like a power ballad." This is the third year in a row the Killers have penned a holiday song and donated proceeds to (RED)."

Woot.

Imagine if it's not very good. It's a possibility.
Imagine that it doesn't relate to the new album at all.
Then radio stations all over the place begin playing it as 'new U2'
News agencies begin reporting this as the 'new U2'

It could be a marketing nightmare.
Very odd to do this so close to the album.

I tell ya, it rings a bit of American Prayer just reading the description.

And here it seem U2 want to try and change some of the popular conventions held about them? A departure, a reinvention?

I'm just saying it doesn't sound like such a great idea UNLESS it is a new single.
And so what if it has to be exclusive.
Let it be exclusive to Redwire until the album comes out and then Apple can have it as well.

This is a good point. It leads me to believe that (roughly in order of likeliness):

1) the song is a cover (so no confusion about "new" material)
2) the album is further away than we think (i.e. Fall 2009)
3) it's the NEW SINGLE

i think it's either #1 or #3. all signs point towards a Feb/March album release. with that said, i would be surprised if U2 went with an "Instant Karma" type release this close to a lead off single to their new album. what that means, i don't know.

So what if it's like American Prayer? It's for charity. Whatever it will be, will be fine. There are a lot of other artists contributing to this project, it would be very odd if U2 didn't, especially considering Bono's involvement with the cause. This news is only a couple of hours old, and already people are coming up with catastrophic scenarios. I wish they wouldn't have announced anything about a new U2 song and it would just have been released on December 1 instead to everyone's surprise.

It can be new material, that doesn't mean it have to be the new single or from the new album.

As for close single releases, Saints and WITS were also released at almost the same time. Saints as digital download for Music Rising and WITS as regular single.

Well, if you seek Amy!

Looks like we've got a new, never before heard U2 recording coming to us on December 1st. That's no shit. I'm fucking excited. I pray that it's an original song. God I'm getting giddy just thinking about it. Even if it is a cover, it's still the first new U2 we've heard in two damned years.

Best news I've heard all day. This calls for a drink. Or twenty.

yeah, but that whole thing was kind of forgettable, IMO

hey, American Prayer is a good song

"if you get to the top of the mountain... would you tell me what you see?
if you get to the top of the mountain... remember me..." :cute:

Lets make camps. Who thinks this be a rocker and who thinks this be a ballad ?

i actually think "Walk Out Into The Streets" might be the first single. maybe it would fit this whole RED thing. Bono sounds angry about things on that song.

Alright, fuck this. Where is everyone at?

People, we have just received the best band related news in over two years.

There is a new U2 song coming out in 6 days.

Get pumped motherfuckers. This is some serious shit. I just cracked open my first beer at 4:19 p.m. in celebration of this shit. I hope I haven't busted my load too early. To tell the truth, if it ends up being a cover.......ahhhhh fuck it, I'm still gassed. But if we get a new, original U2 song in 6 days well then slap my ass and call me Shirley. I don't even know what I'll do with myself.

Cheers to you Interference! I'll see you on the other side.

jeesus no, i can just see the negativity now, specially if this is a special song and not even off the album,

"OMG this isnt a new direction, they lied to us, this sucks bla bla bla bla"

Ah the love of new U2 mateiral.
