eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour 2018 - Rumors & General Discussion

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
They're selling behind the stage, just not reflected on the map for some reason. I see a whole bunch of behind the stage tix in the available tickets column right now. In contrast to Mohegan Sun at $325 and $177, the same tix in Omaha are $76 and $41!

Do you know what prices are GA at Mohegan Sun?

I would love to know how many knock-down, drag-out shouting matches occurred before Guy convinced the band to play a casino.

U2 at Mohegan Sun. Wow. I don't care that Bruce or Prince played there, this is really amazing.

Marty: The last time Tap toured America, they where, uh, booked into 10,000 seat arenas, and 15,000 seat venues, and it seems that now, on their current tour they're being booked into 1,200 seat arenas, 1,500 seat arenas, and uh I was just wondering, does this mean uh...the popularity of the group is waning?
Ian: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no...no, no, not at all. I, I, I just think that the.. uh.. their appeal is becoming more selective.

I know, right? Clearly a new, unprecedented step down by this band. They must be desperate as they've never stopped so low as to play an arena attached to a casino before...

U2 playing Mohegan Sun Arena is not a step down. It's not like they're playing a half full theater in Branson, MO or anything. It's a little small, but it must pay well because all the big artists do it. Springsteen and Prince were mentioned. Classics like Madonna, Aerosmith , Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band to current rock bands like The Killers, Kings of Leon, Coldplay, Muse etc, to today's biggest pop acts like Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have all played there within the last few years.

If that's the only arena to play in that area then what are u2 supposed to do. Obviously there gonna play there

Well, ordinarily they'd go to Hartford or Providence rather than a small town nobody's heard of but that happens to have a casino.

Wow, it’s amazing how easily you’re amazed by things that are not new or shocking at all.

It may seem like a weird choice outside the area, but Mohegan Sun is not a step down from Hartford or Providence. Aside from hard cores who would travel, no one in their geographic target for this show is looking down their noses at Mohegan Sun.

The arena might be smaller, but it's much nicer than either the XL Center in Hartford or the Dunk in Providence, both of which are old dumps that would have been torn down years ago if anyone actually played there (sorry Whalers fans)

That it's a small town is meaningless. It's the Providence/Hartford market. More people live in Uncasville, CT than East Rutherford, NJ or Foxboro, Mass... but nobody blinks when U2 play there because they know that the stadiums in those small towns serve a bigger metro area. Same thing here.

That they added this venue/market so late instead of, say, Toronto or a second Atlanta show or even another MSG or Boston show is strange. But if the original tour dates had come out and this venue was in it I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

the relatively small size of the venue is in itself insightful as to the band's assessment of current demand for this tour.

that said, there is in fact somewhat of a stigma attached to playing venues like these. I get other bands have done it. U2 are not other bands.

And I'm also not saying this is doomsday for them, rather a very telling move.

Yeah, but as others have mentioned, lots of shows are held there. There are 2 casinos right near each other in CT, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun built the 10,000 seat arena, has a WNBA team (women's basketball for you Aussies and Kiwis) that plays its home games there, hosts major touring acts (I have seen Van Halen there twice, seen Motley Crue there and am seeing the Smashing Pumpkins there in July), its a Podunk town yes, but accessible to Boston, NYC, Hartford and Providence by car, so has plenty to draw from. Upcoming shows this year include Bon Jovi, Britney Spears, Faith Hill/Tim McGraw, Lorde, Keith Urban, Judas Priest, Steely Dan and many more.
The other casino, Foxwoods, has 2 theaters, a smaller one (I'd guess 3,000 capacity) and a larger one (I'd guess 6-7,000 capacity) and they also get fairly major acts.

Straight cash homey.

This kind of reminds me of how some people were up in arms about them playing a corporate event a few years ago and how it went against such-and-such moral stands of the 80’s and such.

On top of that, I’m sure some of us are hoping they’ll someday play the 930 Club, Metro, First Avenue and such… possibly forego the video backgrounds and play obscure ambient tracks from their back catalog, and maybe have a beer or two with them after the show. And anything short of that will be seen as some form of selling out or feeding the corporate gods (or casino ones now, apparently).

But honestly, this really isn’t worth looking too far into or being worked up about. Unless maybe they're playing for a cruel dictator or whatever actual problem with actual ramifications might be the case. Especially for a show 97% of us are not even going to be at in the first place. They're not Prince or Soundgarden nowadays... they're still touring and people have a chance to see them. And that's pretty great however you look at it.

There are a TON of tickets left! I live 45 minutes away from Mohegan and my co-workers predicted this would be the fasted sellout. But the prices are obscene.

It's all those upper levels that are side behind the stage and with obstructed screen views at the other end that they have the balls to sell at $325. I am surprised though that the VIP sections are as sold as they are though, not that many left.

I'm not surprised there are a ton of tickets left. Nobody wants to pay that much for a concert. Everybody's getting a little bit too greedy.

Also let's face it; U2 may still be good, but they aren't as good as they were in their 20s and 30s, when prices were a small fraction of what they are now. Totally not worth it. I'm one of U2's biggest fans, and I would never pay that much, even if I can afford it. I'd rather use that $400 to make my car payment, thanks.
