Real World - U2 just released a catchy song. Nice!

Interference - U2 just released a catchy song. Fuck!

Oh Crikey. 99.9% of the "real world" (and by "real world" you mean other places on the internet you've looked) hasn't even heard this song. And don't care.

Other people talking on the internet is no more or less the "real world" than this place is.

The worst aspect is the production, IMO. Melodically it's not a bad concept, as evidenced by the leaked Kygo version. The timbre of the instruments is all over the place throughout (the drums in particular sound like they shift back and forth from acoustic to an imitation electronic kit). It really does sound like the different sections were recorded/re-recorded with all kinds of setups then stitched together. Suspected as much once it was known they were remixing it again days before it was released.

Honestly, I wouldn't put it past them to opt for yet another mix before December.

I think Mikal is referring to an aggregation of the position of TBT on iTunes Charts, universally positive reviews, and comments on non-u2 fan-homogenised sources about it.

Steve Lillywhite (@sillywhite) is on Twitter. I wonder if he'll hear from people about the production issues. He's engaged with fans before.

Why the heck not? Overcooking has done them such a disservice that they might as well be adaptive and choose a better mix for the album.

This song is driving me nuts...first i hated..now i'm dancing over my home with my headphones! :applaud:

Exactly. Taking about people looking at this as a new U2 song and that's all. Not through the lens of detailed U2 history, having heard a couple different versions leading up to this one, knowing it was remixed multiple times, etc...

The positive reaction to it is nice to see, especially from some unexpected places

This song will sit well enough with most real U2 fans, the U2 haters will, well... hate it, and the casual fan or new listener will most likely really like it. That's a win at the end of the day.

And keep perspective. This is ONE song. The other two we've heard are not pop tunes and most likely the rest aren't either. I think we're in for a quality album.

I'm still intrigued listening to it and picking out how many variations they recorded/mixed but it could've been a huge pop hit if they had focused on one approach and the guitar hook. And what's with all the strings? They're going to 4-piece this live and shine the light on the gem buried in the mix or it's going to be backtracked to high hell and lifeless.

Lord knows how they would've eviscerated All My Life...

Imagine if that shows up!

Quite a few listens at work today, few quick thoughts.

My biggest issue with the song are the transitions and production. Verses = solid // chorus = ear worm melody // bridge with Edge singing from his perspective // so damn cool... but none of them really flow together well. The transition from the verse to the pre-chorus is... well there is no transition. It just goes from one thing to another. Very weird mixing/arrangement decision, and it SEEMS like an easy fix.

The ending of the first chorus is just awful, Bono comes in at a WAY higher volume than the rest of the chorus and then it awkwardly plops you into the verse again. Ahh, just so strange.

I also am really missing Edge's infectious guitar riff during the chorus. His playing in the chorus is serviceable, but the bridge hook laid under the chorus would be great. Again, weird decisions.

I think my initial reactions were EXTREMELY clouded by the Kygo versions... we've basically known what this song sounds like for more than a year now, so I was really thrown right off by the more pared back production.

That being said, it is an objectively catchy hook and fairly accessible radio song, which is surely what they wanted after the SOI debacle.

Just went back and listened to the Blackout again... what a jam. Still stoked for the album.

I didn't think much of The Blackout ( that's a song that does sound disjointed to me), but really like best thing a lot. Great melody, still guitar driven, but sounding fresh and just danceable enough.

Thumbs up.

So after listening to the soul mix a handful of times today, I decided, "What the hell, let's give shitty version another spin."

Yeah, my initial impressions may have been a tad exaggerated (I think my general mood at the time sorta unfairly tainted my perception of the song). But yeah, I'm discovering unexpected charm in the surprisingly rough production (and vocal delivery--even while watching the lyric video, there are times when I've absolutely no idea which word Bono is slurring), somewhat manic direction and cornball lyrics. Even the chorus (which I previously felt deflated the buoyant ebullience of the Kygo mix) isn't bothering me nearly as much--which, I must admit, is probably mainly due to having predisposed expectations.

So quite the flipflop lol

:drunk:

Well, fair enough. But I don't think the "real world" obsesses endlessly about beach tapes, multiple versions and phantom release dates either. This is a U2 fan site after all, the opinions here are likely to be stronger, and a bit more nuanced, than you'll find on most of the rest of the internet.

Anyway, that's how it always is, isn't it? Either the fans love something the "real world" doesn't or the fans dislike something the "real world" loves (or doesn't care about). Rinse and repeat.

Besides, the opinion of people who really don't care about U2 that much and will forget about this song by next week really doesn't make the (more informed) opinions here any less valid, does it?

Getting multiple plays on Spectrum and Alt Nation on SiriusXM.

I did enjoy it more in the car then here on my 'puter.

Same! Was Spectrum playing the sci-fi mix? It sounded a little different to me. And I really like the song. It melts my cynical heart.

Allow me to shine a light on your gem of a post... very well said.

Can't find the comment now, but this morning someone who hated the song said that they doubted U2 would hit 200k YouTube views by the end of the night.
It hit 200k in 8 hours. Now at 250k

I didn't love beautiful day when I first heard it. This reminds me a lot of that time. It could take off, I like it the more I listen. Yes hearing the kygo version might have ruined my initial reaction.

Album is looking gooddddd
