SOE 21 - It comes down to this...

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Nice idea but the world will let out a collective yawn if U2 do another themed or event style album release.

The world will yawn regardless, but at least it would benefit AIDS. The alternative is to put the album out, watch it sell maybe 1 million copies to only the biggest of fans (worldwide), and have it debut at #1 and then drop like a rock after that.

It would give casual fans even more reason to buy it. Besides what do they have to lose? The real cash is in the touring. All they care about is how many people have their album and not how much cash they made off the sales. This at least puts the money in a good place. They could do a Radiohead move and if you buy the album you decide how much you pay for it.

That would be a great idea. In order to buy this album, simply choose how much you would like to donate to AIDS charity, and the album comes with the donation. AIDS is probably the one charity that EVERYONE can get behind, regardless of all factors.

However, the snarky hipster generation will still find a way to be outraged by this.

All That You Can't Leave Behind was fairly low key.

Very true, but only because the whole theme was going small after Popmart. Not disagreeing with you though. It would be nice to see them do something smaller. But it would be for a great cause if they went the route I was describing.

Make a donation = buy the album at any price ya like

Back in the MTV days, artists didn't HAVE to do the promo tours like they do now. MTV was playing a commercial for your album (music video) in constant rotation all day long. Likewise, radio was promoting you all day long as well. Now, you need to get the word out. You have to do shows like Fallon, Kimmel, and whatever else you can do. And since this is tied in with World AIDS Day, I would expect a major promo tour to surround this album.

Do they perform on their own on Fallon or Kimmel OR do they do another big show with other acts and them closing the show in Times Square?

ALL OF THE ABOVE!!! AND MORE!

I fully expect a carpool karaoke segment.

U2songs updated now saying TBT is prolly the new single

Just saw this. I guess they figured out how to turn it into a big rawk song

I'm so curious to hear what TBT sounds like compared to the kygo mix. They mention it's a more u2-sounding mix, sooo... maybe more guitar, less electronics, removing the pulsing 'oonts' club beat?

Just remind yourself of the summer 2016 beach clip of TBT .. it's likely to be this version (+ some polishing)

U2 cover story for Hotpress has been submitted by Olaf. Wonder if there are any juicy SOE titbits in it?

So really at this point, I think it's safe to say that the album is coming based on what we've heard. And like I do every album cycle, I'm going to say that if all we hear is crickets towards the end of August, then something bad happened.

Or the sound of scratching muted guitar strings cause Edge decided the first single needed more of it in the verses.

I'm as pessimistic as anyone and I think the album is done and will be released this year. 2017 it is

if the last week of august is nothing but tumbleweed I'd worry...at least about the single. They should at least by than hype that something is going on and coming.

Certainly wouldn't expect much in the first few weeks of August with it being vacation time in Eze sur mer.

Waiting for U2 - A Haiku

august means beach clips
a test of will; thanks, bono
damn I cant hear shit.

A few things:

1. I'm not quite sold on the World AIDS Day thing. Isn't the point of the day to be about AIDS awareness? U2 releasing an album and basically screaming "Pay attention to us and our creative efforts" on the same day would be a little tacky, no? And cross-purposes considering their advocacy.

2. As for the band giving away proceeds from the album to benefit AIDS research, this makes me wonder what's the point of them being on Interscope. Apple may have subsidized the previous album, so the record company was able to make a profit, but in this case wouldn't Interscope lose a considerable amount of money if it's all going to charity? Sure the band doesn't need the money and can make it off touring, but does Interscope get anything from ticket sales?

3. Since when did "Olaf" become a first-name-basis celebrity on this board? The last two times I saw this guy mentioned I was like "Who the fuck is that?" It's bad enough we have Phallus Shoe obsessives here, now we're elevating random journalists to that level? Is this guy some local Irish celebrity writer? I know there are well-known insider media people often associated with U2 and who have hot tips on news like Dave Fanning or Neil McCormick but those guys have been around for a long time; I don't remember seeing Olaf's name before this year.
