Agreed, once again U2's single choices leave a lot to be desired, they're just not getting it.

EBW album version
Crystal Ballroom
The Troubles

Yes, if only they did this, those songs would be tearing up the radio charts and all over YouTube, and people would be rushing out to buy a record that they didn't like when it was free.

The one thing I will say though is that you never know when a song will take off or happen to catch fire. Yeah, chances are slim and what U2 would probably need is for the song to be associated with something else like an event. Unfortunately, they seem to know the same thing and unfortunately their attempts at partnerships (Super Bowl/iPhone Launch) didn't create the spark they were looking for.

They're just OOOOOooooolllld. Old. Freakin' Old. They could release ISHFWILF today and it would perform as well as EBW.

U2 needs to stop trying to make fetch Every Breaking Wave happen.

Every Breaking Wave IS happening.

As a creative director, I know the worst feedback you can give is "can you make it a combination of the two"?

But that's how I feel about the two EBWs. Take that over-the-cloud, blood-on-the-track passionate vocal that comes out of the bridge in the new version and throw it on the album version. Best of both. Boom. Done.

Funny thing happened to me today after all the talk about the radio play of a new EBW version. I was sitting in the restaurant and a song started playing. I thought, wow, it must be it, they are playing EBW!!! Then it went on and I realized it was "Someone Like You" by Adele :) Don´t crucify me please :)

No crucifixion but, instead, to the pain...

If it makes you feel any better, I thought of Bon Jovi's "Always" the first time I heard acoustic EBW :drunk:

I have no idea why. Haven't heard that song in--literally--over a decade, and I don't care to rectify that anytime soon.

Every Breaking Wave IS happening.

How long has there been talk about EBW getting radio play and being the next single? How long has it been since the intense acoustic performances were being shared and discussed?

In pop music terms, a damned long time, I'd say.

I mean, I suppose it's possible they put some stuff on hold when Bono boffed on his bike, but is it normal for a band to start revving up a new single, take a month or two off and then release another version like it's still going to be a "new single"?

That's kind of rambly.

In short: LOL OK.

I have not felt the urge to listen to EBW, or the rest of the album for that matter, in the past 2 months. And I like this band.

It's wonky, definitely! I don't see why marketing and a video for EBW shouldn't happen, and not the artsy videos either.

The Jan. 12th rumoured single release date came and went and nothing happened. Then a week or so later Bono sends in a new version to a radio station?

So odd!

This new version of "Every Breaking Wave" should chart about as well as the reworked version of "Please" did in '97. I wish we could just reboot this entire album campaign :|

I love the new Every Breaking Wave mix, but I doubt that it will, ahh, happen.

Yes, I'm sure, Bono, who's unable to perform and do any promo appearances due to his bad injuries agrees with you and wishes he can reboot everything, especially the day he sat on that bike.

They had a great campaign last year. It's extremely unfortunate that it all came to a hold because of Bono's accident. Otherwise they would be doing their rounds in the US and promoting the album heavily.

Yes, launching a song without an album at one of the most watched TV events in the world and then going away for 7 months, only to reappear as the butt end of a million jokes was really a great year for them, publicity wise.

Maybe their best.

A little more to it than that, but whatever.

We're talking about the album campaign here which started on 9/9 when the album was released. The Super Bowl thing was about Invisible which was released as a charity single. I don't consider this to be part of an "album campaign" because, clearly, they didn't have an album ready a year ago.

Wasn't Invisible, like, also supposed to be a teaser for the album, as well as a charity single?

Whatever the case may be, the event announced "U2 ARE BACK" and then silence for months followed. Not everyone knows the details of a U2 album/single/whatever campaign.

And the album campaign was more or less ridiculed by most of western civilization.

You're batting a thousand today

The album campaign consisted of scores of folks complaining about getting the album forced into their itunes account, the band and said release strategy being the butt of jokes worldwide, Bono issuing an apology and Apple issuing a press release with instructions to delete the album from your library...thats all the real publicity the album release got.

While not as brilliant as wasting a 4 million dollar Super Bowl ad by doing zero follow up, a close second.

I got the impression (this is just conjecture, unless someone knows something that can back it up) that Invisible was meant to test the water for public interest in new U2, and that it was originally intended as the first single off a new album. I doubt the band would do a Super Bowl ad and appear on Fallon's first Tonight Show just for a one-off charity single.

There's also the matter of the release strategy similarities b/w Invisible and SOI. It seems likely that U2 weren't happy with the interest generated by the former's free download (although 3 million downloads is pretty fuckin respectable), so they went back to the drawing board and decided a "push" release would get more listeners for the album proper.

All conjecture of course, but seems likely.
