We were supposed to be tired, apparently.

We need West Coast to be good (when they're not playing us) and beat Collingwood for ladder's sakes.

Co-signed.

Dogs looking good this afternoon, but the Saints managing to hang on. Fairly entertaining game so far I think.

Every time Hamish opens his mouth commentating this Saints/Dogs game, I want to punch him and his brother in the face.

I don't mind his brother, but Hamish is a rubbish commentator. I know I say this all the time, but if we were playing a drinking game for every time there was a horse racing reference in every game, we'd be dead!

Co-signed.

Co-signed by 17 other clubs, no?

Very pleased with this start by West Coast! Question is, of course, whether they can keep it up.

Saints vs Dogs is pretty exciting right now. Saints keep trying to come back but the Dogs are doing just enough to sustain their lead.

It's a race to stop Richmond from finishing 9th!

Bucks had a good game tactically last week and everything went right, but we've gone horribly wrong all over the field today. Just dumb football.

Looking at our list I see plenty of delisting going on come the end of the season. That's not to say it's all doom and gloom, as the kids in the side will be better for the run 2-3 years down the track.

But for now we have some rubbish players on our list and the way we have recruited since 2011 has to be questioned (ie: Jessie White & Quinton Lynch)

Wow, what a thumping victory. The rest of the competition says thanks, West Coast.

We were actually sat a couple of rows in front of the CEO at the match, not fancy seats by any stretch of the imagination, but sure enough he was there in a fat brown jacket with a couple of kids with him.

The commentator version of him is unlistenable.

I'm so damn happy. We could be eighth. We could play the Power in the elimination final holy shit that sounds so good I'm gonna buy a hundred invisible tickets right now

Bonnie, it is ON this weekend. Bring it.

Unbelievably massive round. At the end of the round, it's possible that the winners of Essendon vs West Coast and Adelaide vs Richmond will be in the eight and the losers won't - but there's also Collingwood's easy fixture against Brisbane to throw a spanner into the works (I suspect they will return to the eight at the expense of one of the aforementioned winners). Gold Coast probably won't re-enter even if they knock off Port since their percentage is weak, but if Port lose then North will be a good chance of finishing the season fifth - though North have to beat a resurgent Doggies first. Meanwhile, at the top of the ladder, Sydney will probably regain #1 thanks to a piss-easy fixture against St Kilda while Hawthorn have a slog against Freo.

What a great tight season this is turning out to be.

Richmond won't be able to leapfrog us even if they do beat us, our % is larger by about 8%, unless of course it's something like a 12 goal victory.

I really wish we used something more obvious and easier to calculate than percentage. I find a basic points differential much easier to work out, i.e. if we just said that Adelaide had a PD of +206 and Richmond of +64 (which they do), then you know pretty easily that Richmond need to beat Adelaide by 72 points to pass them on the ladder - i.e. one more point than half the difference of their PDs. I can look at a PD and quickly calculate necessary margins; with percentage I just vaguely know whether a team needs a small, decent, or big victory to pass somebody.

Or is there some trick or obvious method that I don't know?

Andy Otten has to have his second knee reconstruction in 5 years. Remember how good he was in 2009 and it felt like only last year he was getting it back. :(

My original reply to this was to say that points difference would diminish the importance of team defence, although it probably still takes it into account as well as percentage. But I prefer the method we have. Aussie Rules is high-scoring, if we moved to points difference there might be a tendency to stop listing for and against in ladders. Doesn't really matter in rugby and soccer because of the low scoring, but it's important to note how effective Aussie Rules teams are offensively and defensively.

And that will probably happen under Sando am I right lol!

I'm still annoyed at the last round of the H/A season in 2008, we knock off the Dogs at home back when they were a top team and seemingly have 4th place sewn up, then the next evening ... St Kilda crush Essendon by 100 or so points, leaving us 5th on % and then we lose to an undermanned Collingwood in the EF the next week.

Danny, I'm not sure I see or understand how using points differential versus percentage would affect offensive play in the slightest? What do you mean?

(Also, every rugby table I've ever seen lists points for and points against as well as points difference. You can't have one column without the other two.)

I don't mean it would affect play, certainly not. But it might make people look at stats differently, and focus more on attack than defence. And with much higher scoring I think percentage is a better representation.

God, wish I could just fly over for the game. No chance of it, but I reckon I'm due for a Melbourne trip sometime anyway.

Also, I have a new avatar, and I'm not changing it until Chadler "Wingard" Wankard plays a half decent game of footy.

Bonnie, if the Eagles make the finals and have a game in Melbourne I expect to see you here!

We are totally due for an Adelaide trip too.

Hahaha, nice.

There were 50k at the Swans game, though. Not a chance the tarps will come back any time soon, since a lot of people are going to games for the sheer novelty of it, plus there's the chance they could still go far in September - sounds dumb, but watching the game on Saturday night, it's pretty clear why they're failing at the moment, and it's largely because of missed opportunities and underperforming stars. Will be right up there next year, regardless of how much they'll lose by against West Coast in the elimination final.

I really should, shouldn't I? I have a big month coming up, and I've found a crappy part-time job so it's harder to tell when I get free days, but yeah, will definitely think about it. Also, get over here, so we can all find Vlad. ;)

I'm sure that standing on any major street corner waving around a Crows scarf, some Gaza leaflets, and a disc of Manics rarities would attract Vlad pretty quickly.

Yeah, that's true, I think the timing of the video was pretty off but I found it funny nonetheless.
