I do LIKE Wave of Sorrow, but hearing it among the other 1986/7 stuff, it hurts to hear how now awesome Bono's voice was.

TUF and TJT days were easily his finest in terms of vocals, only time were he ever mixed the power of his voice with actually being able to sing properly. I actually think he can sing better now just his voice doesn't have the same power now, if that makes sense at all

From left: Brian Eno, Edge, Bono, Larry, Adam after a year-long case of the munchies.

Oh my god. :lmao:

The more I listen to U2's back catalogue, the more I realize that Bono was only a great singer for about 10 years. 1984-1993. That said, I couldn't give a fuck about vocals. Long live that crazy old fucker Tom Waits.

Cartoon World just came up on shuffle, U2 need to bring this song back and play it live. I don't know why it's not really a great song but I just imagine it being terribly funny live these days

It's pretty good.

I was just about to comment that this particular song is beautiful. I was shocked to discover, however, that the name of the song, is in fact..."Beautiful".

I hate to think how many awful puns have been made in Marillionland based on that title.

The amount of Magnificent puns in the titles of reviews submitted to U2gigs is starting to hurt.

Oh dear. I went looking to see who told me to listen to Afraid of Sunlight (Liam) and found this post: http://www.u2interference.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5525159&postcount=927

Axver, I apologize, that was a weird time in my life or something.... XD.

Hahah, I went further back in the thread to find out why I said that, and found this:

It does. As I understand it, he's much more technically sound these days. but damn it, I'm a fan of Bruce Springsteen for crying out loud, I kinda care a tad more about power.

Oh God, that just sounds painful. Me and puns, you know how I am. That's just brutal.

I'm mostly in agreement with this. Sure, Bono can technically sing better nowadays, you just need to look at Miss Sarajevo from Vertigo to know that, but his voice simply doesn't SOUND as good.

Here's my take, and I'm talking both about studio and live from these eras:

Pre-Boy: Sounded terrible and had no skill. But by 1979, he was really starting to get passion and control, and some songs really appeal anyway.
Boy-October: Sounded good but had little skill.
War: Sounded great, gaining skill. Kind of a transition period.
UF-Zooropa: Sounded great through various incarnations and had skill. Lovetown was the peak. Just listen to the Dublin gigs.
Pop: Sounded much weaker, but was able to use it effectively so you don't notice that much.
ATYCLB-HTDAAB: Blaaaaahhhh, but Vertigo was good technically and he didn't sound as bad as on Elevation.
NLOTH: Improvement, but a far cry from the glory days.

That would be all kinds of SuperWin. IT'SA CARTON!

U2 GOT CROATIA'S MAGNIFICENT BIG FAT ASS SHAKING!!

clf!

I am becoming increasingly convinced that Ayatollah by Swingers is the greatest political song ever.

YouTube - Swingers - Ayatollah

(Yes, that's Phil Judd, ex-Split Enz, on vocals. And the bassist is Bones Hillman, who went on to play in Midnight Oil.)

Oh Ayatollah man, he rules Iran!

I pretty much agree with this

I'd say PopMart was the low point, with a slow but steady improvement since Elevation

Now I'm tempted to post other pictures from that visit to the zoo, but a certain young man might kill me.

Pre-Boy: TWILIGHT TWILIGHT TWILIGHT TWILIGHT TWILIGHT
Boy-October: Doesn't know how to sing, doesn't listen to anyone who does. No one cares.
War: Hits a good note once in a while, lacks nothing in power. Good period, Red Light notwithstanding.
TUF-Lovetown: THE PEAK. Highly respectable. Hits notes with power and good pitch. Good cameo appearances from Kermit.
ZooTV: Loses some power, gains one hell of a falsetto.
Popmart: Loses power, falsetto. No one notices, however, because giant, glittery lemons are quite the distraction.
Elevation: Sounds like hell, and they skimped on giant lemons, so no excuses. Tears can blur the way Adam looked, but ears don't cry. Unless you're listening to The Fray.
Vertigo: Bad first few legs, improved exponentially from there.
NLOTH: Sloppy as hell, but the power is coming back (see: AUGH TIGHHED MYSEHHHLPH WI WIAGGAAAAAHHGGGGH).

:snort:

I wish ANYONE else would understand it. It was pretty much the stupidest joke you've ever made.

Yet you laughed for like an hour. If I knew lowest common denominator jokes were your thing, I would have turned off my wit months ago. :tsk:

I still laugh. Every time I see that damn picture. I'm uploading it now. Maybe a side by side comparison will help others to see what you're talking about.

After listening to some Popmart boots, I reckon it beats Elevation. Case in point: Popmart Sarajevo. For all of Bono's vocal failings at that show, the performance of Please is vocally (and in every other way) better than anything the band did on the entire Elevation Tour.

I can find very little fault with this analysis. Though the AUGH TIGHHED MYSEHHHLPH WI WIAGGAAAAAHHGGGGH thing that Bono does is truly awful.

I like the scaled back version on the album. As far as the live version goes...good God, Bono, I know you're fat, but you're not in labor.

I just learnt something today when mixing drums do not use a phaser effect on them with high feedback, i think I'm deaf

Can I just say how thankful I am that Bass Trap, Boomerang I, 4th Of July, and Sixty Seconds In Kingdom Come were released back in 1984-5? If they were in the vault and U2 dug them up now, Bono would probably decide they sound "incomplete" because he can't hear his own bloody voice and would've sung some nonsense over the top about mullets and love and soul.

U2, instrumentals are alright. Really.

God, that would be a fun project for me to do. Take U2's instrumentals, write lyrics for them in the style of 00s U2, do the vocals, and post them on Interference. :hmm:

The instrumentals from TUF era were just really great tracks

Ok. I asked Travis why this horse had such a long mane:

When this one was fairly well trimmed:

Travis said the reason was that the first horse was Sean Connery from The Rock:

Oh, sixty seconds in kingdom come
Kneeling with your soul
Sixty seconds of kneeling with your soul
In this beautiful kingdom come
Where I was reborn to kneel for you

The instrumentals from TUF era were just really great tracks

I bet White City was a sweet instrumental before it became Disappearing Act too.

Sixty Seconds in Kingdom Come has a LOT of potential, now that you mention it.
