Since you think HTDAAB is better, then i dont know what to tell you.

You know, I really hate to say this, but I can almost see why HTDAAB got better reviews. Without any half-assed experimentation, the band of Bomb doesn't sound like they're floating on a piece of driftwood, not in the same way anyway. No, the album hasn't aged well, but it sounded like a real force upon first listens back in 2004. NLOTH starts out that way (in a far better way!) but then perhaps trails off into what I'd call half-assed experimentation - not to mention a couple songs that just don't fit in the album's flow - that makes the band sound like they don't really know what they want to do. With Bomb, at least it sounded like they knew, even if it was just a return to basics.

Years from now we'll probably all have different opinions on NLOTH, just as we do for Bomb. NLOTH may be the grower that its supporters all want it to be; or it may be the opposite, an exciting album upon first listen where you're glad the band is trying but eventually you realize they didn't try hard enough. Just saying, I can see someone preferring Bomb.

I think this album flows perfectly and I only made my mind up very recently after a few weeks to let it settle in and after several listens.
Thinking initially, I kind of agreed with some people who thought songs 5-7 didn't fit. I can see now that they do in fact fit! I'm glad this album doesn't have one sound or mood, it was right of the band to mix it up in the middle before the end tracks. Time will tell but as I've said before I believe history will be very kind on this album, especially post tour and live dvds etc.

i think the album flows perfectly too, as long as you picture a bathrub with the water draining until theres just a trickle left, and then nothing....

Who dropped the ball on NLOTH?

It seems that for the first time the new U2 album did not receive a nearly unanimous gushing over, there are a couple of threads of complaints on what went wrong. If it wasn't the poor choruses, the forgettable melodies then it was probably the terrible mixing job. There's something that without a doubt went wrong with this album.

What I would like to know is who you think is to blame: Who's responsibility is it? Who dropped the ball on this one? Was it Bono for not coming up with better lyrics or melodies? Was it Edge who didn't step in and say "maybe we should wait before releasing this"? Was it the whole band for apparently not hearing the bad mix job?

Someone waited before releasing it obvoiusly because it was delayed 5 months.

Nobody dropped the ball because there is no consensus on what is good/bad. Everyone has different ideas of what worked and what didn't. For me everything is great, the album flows more smoothly than any other U2 album and every song has something special about it.

If there is one thing wrong, it was releasing Get on Your Boots as the 1st single ("sexy boots" just kills me when I hear it). I dont mind the song but it just didn't do it for the masses. Other than that, I dont think anyone dropped the ball. I like the production, Adam/Larry/Edge are fantastic on this album. Lyrics...I don't have a problem with (okay, again "Sexy Boots"?? WTF). Im still trying to LISTEN to the album. I have heard it several times but now I need to listen.... :corn:

The other two albums released this decade weren't unanimously loved either. A quick hop over to Metacritic would have told you this.

Of course, the real point of this thread is that YOU have a problem with the album, and are so arrogant that you somehow feel your opinion is worthy of its own thread (instead of several others where it would fit just fine), where you will GET TO THE BOTTOM OF EVERYTHING and show us all what we missed.

Thanks for wasting everyone's time.

Quick, everybody................to the batmobile!!!

Taking off my acting pants and putting my analrapist sock on my head for a moment ... I think the reason it didn't receive universal acclaim right away like Bomb did is for two reasons:

1. NLOTH was given the title of an experimental album, which automatically made people wanna compare it to Achtung.

2. HTDAAB was an album that sounded great on first listen and gradually got worse for most. Many here were educated by that experience and tried to be more rational in their listens to this one, tempering some judgment that would have normally drooled all over this.

But the premise of this thread is antagonizing and deserves the sarcastic replies it got. You'll not get a full out response from me without me stating I disapprove of this.

I have several gripes on this album, actually: The uninspiring lyrics ("Reboot yourself!") that don't evoke anything U2 and the strange melody lines that don't really catch me. I also find the sound quality to be muddy at times and unclear. Don't get me wrong. I have not written off this album but a while ago I've been fostering the lingering sensation that something didn't go right with this one.

I think you wasted your own time by reading this thread and then proceeding to post about it. Maybe you would've saved some time if you'd gone over to ebaumsworld.com or whatever it is you do with your idle time.

Please don't take it as antagonizing. I know several U2 fans besides myself that don't post on this forum that have said the very same thing. I've absolutely loved everything they done up to this point (including passengers) and somehow No Line is having a little bit of trouble sinking in and I wanted to talk about what it was that changed this time around. That's all.

Whose balls dropped on this album....I'm sure that was the title of this thread when I clicked it!
