Edge got a little lazy on this album on some parts. The live performances over the past couple of weeks by the band only bring that out. Still love ya Edge.
Since you think HTDAAB is better, then i dont know what to tell you.
I think this album flows perfectly and I only made my mind up very recently after a few weeks to let it settle in and after several listens. You know, I really hate to say this, but I can almost see why HTDAAB got better reviews. Without any half-assed experimentation, the band of Bomb doesn't sound like they're floating on a piece of driftwood, not in the same way anyway. No, the album hasn't aged well, but it sounded like a real force upon first listens back in 2004. NLOTH starts out that way (in a far better way!) but then perhaps trails off into what I'd call half-assed experimentation - not to mention a couple songs that just don't fit in the album's flow - that makes the band sound like they don't really know what they want to do. With Bomb, at least it sounded like they knew, even if it was just a return to basics.
Years from now we'll probably all have different opinions on NLOTH, just as we do for Bomb. NLOTH may be the grower that its supporters all want it to be; or it may be the opposite, an exciting album upon first listen where you're glad the band is trying but eventually you realize they didn't try hard enough. Just saying, I can see someone preferring Bomb.
i demand a congressional inquiry.
It seems that for the first time the new U2 album did not receive a nearly unanimous gushing over, there are a couple of threads of complaints on what went wrong. If it wasn't the poor choruses, the forgettable melodies then it was probably the terrible mixing job. There's something that without a doubt went wrong with this album.
What I would like to know is who you think is to blame: Who's responsibility is it? Who dropped the ball on this one? Was it Bono for not coming up with better lyrics or melodies? Was it Edge who didn't step in and say "maybe we should wait before releasing this"? Was it the whole band for apparently not hearing the bad mix job?
the "problem" is that U2 has 30 years of history to contend with.
Whose congress, though? WHOSE CONGRESS?!?!?!?

Nobody dropped the ball because there is no consensus on what is good/bad. Everyone has different ideas of what worked and what didn't. For me everything is great, the album flows more smoothly than any other U2 album and every song has something special about it.

The other two albums released this decade weren't unanimously loved either. A quick hop over to Metacritic would have told you this.
Of course, the real point of this thread is that YOU have a problem with the album, and are so arrogant that you somehow feel your opinion is worthy of its own thread (instead of several others where it would fit just fine), where you will GET TO THE BOTTOM OF EVERYTHING and show us all what we missed.
Thanks for wasting everyone's time.
Taking off my acting pants and putting my analrapist sock on my head for a moment ... I think the reason it didn't receive universal acclaim right away like Bomb did is for two reasons:
1. NLOTH was given the title of an experimental album, which automatically made people wanna compare it to Achtung.
2. HTDAAB was an album that sounded great on first listen and gradually got worse for most. Many here were educated by that experience and tried to be more rational in their listens to this one, tempering some judgment that would have normally drooled all over this.
But the premise of this thread is antagonizing and deserves the sarcastic replies it got. You'll not get a full out response from me without me stating I disapprove of this.
