I saw that, J'stin. Ph.D huh? :nerd:

:applaud:

Yeah. :D I'm going to try to work towards becoming a professor.

This is my educational plan, for anyone that didn't see it:

Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts in Poetry
Minor in Women's Studies

Master's Degree in English

Ph.d in Creative Writing
You can get graduate certificates in certain areas too so I'd try to ones in Great Plains Studies and Women's and Gender Studies.

Wow that seems really interesting, especially Great Plains and Women's Studies. So you've decided to pursue a Ph.D as well, eh? We'll be the two professors of the CSGWs!

Short naps. They're so refreshing!

Back already? That WAS a short nap!

Make that three. :nerd:

 Yep, 15 minutes is all you need...it's the perfect amount so you don't go into deeper sleep, which if woken out of before you finish the cycle, is what makes you tired after a nap.

Hey guys.

I want to be known for my many talents, like drawing, guitar and photography.
I`m an excellent technician just from learning when I was little working on VCR`s,computers and tv`s and stuff like that,no I don`t have anything from school yet,but I might.
The one thing I want to do though as you all know,is have a band,I just need a bit of time...:D

 I'd like to have some specialties in my education for a career as a professor and in writing. I hope I could teach classes in those special areas especially literature from this region and women's lit.

:D Yes we will Zee or should I say, Dr. Zee.

What would you get your Ph.D in? Some area of music I presume? :)

All you need is three chords and the truth! :hi5:

Probably cultural studies or American studies. :) I'd never be able to get into a PhD level music program, and honestly, probably wouldn't want to. Too much theory and classical for me. The people in the cultural studies and American studies departments are way more open-minded about letting their grad students research diverse subjects, essentially whatever the student wants.

Cool. Are there any specific areas that most interest you? :)

Good point. One of my friends wants to research a certain Native American tribe, I forget which exact name though - and the department is pressurizing her to research a different one.

After doing a lot of reading for my project next semester, I think I'll continue to study indie music cultures. There are so many fascinating contradictions and practices within the culture as a whole, and within local scenes as well. That might end up being my specialty, but I also want to have a firm education in American rock era music as well. The indie stuff could end up being my research, and the rock stuff being what I teach. All in the most perfect world, of course.

I have no clue what I`d like to have a Ph.D,but I also wanted to try my hand in the medical field, such as a Cardiologist

 That's so annoying! I'm lucky in that there happen to be a lot of people at the U who are doing research and teaching the sorts of things that I want to be teaching at some point, so I've found a lot of support and encouragement from different professors.

I've always felt that for grad students, as long as there aren't serious obstacles that would hurt the students' chances of getting their dissertation or thesis done, they should be able to do nearly any research they want. Maybe I'm a bit of a softie when it comes to that though.

So is music cultures part of the cultural studies/American studies department?

Exactly Cassie, as a grad student you should at least be allowed the freedom to do what you want. You're past the age of undergrad and high school, so why not be treated like an adult? :D

Justin, I don't know. Something I am interested in and something I can do well in and earn well in :hmm:

So is music cultures part of the cultural studies/American studies department?

It's been adopted by them, yes. Musicology tends not to focus on the cultural impacts as much as people in cultural studies or American studies. Although, I should say that both of those departments are very hodgepodgey. In our cultural studies department, there are two musicologists who chose to do cultural studies instead, and then people focused on film, and there's also a grad student there who's doing his dissertation on Minneapolis/Twin Cities hip hop. So, lots of diversity there. American studies is the same way, there are a lot of classes on popular culture and politics in the 20th century, America after 9/11, all sorts of crazy stuff. All fascinating though.

EDIT: I should add that one of those musicologists in the cultural studies department not only teaches Music as Discourse, which I'm taking with him next semester, but also teaches a course on comedy and one on gay men and homophobia in American culture.

 Plus, I thought part of the point of doing those big research projects was to dig deep into something that you love, not something that the department wants you to look into.

I completely agree with the both of you.

Have you considered becoming a professor? I think you'd be really good at teaching and I know you'd be great in research or projects. :)

That could be really fun for you it sounds like.

I don`t know,I have just always been fascinated with the heart  I really love studying about it...

Fascination is a great starting point in any pursuit.

:hmm:

For some reason, teaching doesn't appeal to me as much even though both my dad and sister are as well as a few relatives. It's approval based too - you stand up there and if you're not liked... meh.

But I do like the part time hours and the freedom :hmm: Teach what, though?

Yeah, I especially like the potential of being surrounded by people who are studying different things in different ways, it's a great way to learn from others.

Yeah,it is really cool, cause you can also try and see from their perspective, and they can try and see it from yours, but that is what you were saying,I just said it for you in a different way

 You definitely hit on one of my biggest fears of teaching. I would hate to be the professor on ratemyprofessors.com who had all bad ratings. Although, I feel like I could hold my own...

The freedom is  for sure.
