Popular band who've ripped off U2

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

ha

well there definitely was a band that ripped off the with or without you bass line...i wish i could remember who it was.

in some ludicrous way U2 must have been some sort of influence (good or bad) on many bands
if only for being around in the public eye for the amount of time that they have

I don't think anyone could rip off U2
it's a bit like how U2 are generally bad at playing covers, bands are usually bad at covering U2
or something

i have always hated the "rip-off" argument when it comes to music in general. it's human nature to take things away from your influences. i find myself playing edge-like stuff on guitar sometimes. for as much as i listen to U2, it's hard not to.

I'm bored and want to address the artists they mentioned.

The Killers:
The Killers and bands like them seem to have more similarities to early 80's alternative bands. I don't hear U2 at all.

Radiohead:
I'm no expert on Radiohead but I've heard enough of them in Desert Island to know they don't sound at all like U2.

Coldplay:
Now Coldplay at times sounds like a lot of artists but not U2. The heart of their sound is in 90's Britpop though nowadays it more in the realm of atmospheric artists.

Passengers is way more creative than U2 will ever be. Radiohead could learn something from them.

I should start a thread about them in B&C to spread awareness.

Radiohead? Oh, please! They are probably one of the most original bands out there. And this is from someone who hasn't liked much of what they have done since OK Computer.

The Killers? I think they are just influenced by the early '80s post-punk/new wave scene in general, which U2 happened to be a part of.

Coldplay? OK, maybe the writer has a case on that one.

There is some evidence in their early music to suggest that Radiohead were at least influenced by U2. Paranoid Android was previously mentioned, and High and Dry in the article both have some U2 in them.

The Killers, well, they themselves have mentioned U2 as influences, but not moreso than New Order and the like. They have a great sound that no-one can match, and definately aren't 'ripping off' U2

Coldplay. Well, they are the diet-coke of U2. Or perhaps the other way around, Coke with WAY too much sugar. I quite like some of their songs, but Chris Martin needs his own image. The article ahs hit on something it wasn't intending to: Namely that ripping off U2 isn't just in the sound. Coldplay, while not sounding a whole lot like U2 most of the time, sure do act like them!

Well the comments show the continued ignorance of mainstream listeners, ever since U2 hit the zenith of fandom and popularity, casual listeners claim that they're not innovative, whereas Radiohead is...as if.

Well coldplay could be mentioned yes i mean take a line from Violet Hill:

"When the bank became cathedrals"

Now rewind to 1996,1997 from a certain album called POP, song playboy mansion:

"The banks they're like cathedrals"

Mmm... ;)

But seriously im sure a lot of bands are looking at U2.

Linkin Park? Shadow of the Day?

that song is a complete WOWY ripoff

 check Dreamoutloud's version, she put WOWY and SotD over eachother, and the song starts the same way, drums kick in on the SAME time and it 'explodes' around the same time too!

:tsk: but still, coldplay are the worst... Chris martin said it himself, he thinks he sounds like bano!
