I don't know if they actually opened for U2 (not counting possible festival dates).
Famous openers also include:
- Velvet Underground (several Zooropa dates)
- Pretenders (Joshua Tree Tour)
- Lou Reed (also Joshua Tree Tour)
- No Doubt & Garbage (OK, this is very recent, but they are quite big. Bigger than PJ anyway)
- Urban Dance Squad (OK, not well known, but my 2nd most favourite band)
- Stereo MC's (they were very big in 1993 when they opened on the Zooropa tour)
- Skunk Anansie (same as Stereo MC's, but then in 1997)

Can you blame them? I don't care how famous I would be. If U2 asked me to open for them, I would. Of course, I would probably need some kind of musical talent but that's beside the point.

I saw The Waterboys open up for U2 on The Unforgettable Fire tour. They may not be well known now, but were considered a great band then, and are still making great music today. Mike Scott is a musical genius.

I saw the Pixies open for U2 on the ZooTV tour. I remember walking into the arena and hearing super loud thrash music. I wasn't impressed. Can someone recommend an album that might make me a believer?

How about "Surferosa" or "Doolittle". Both great albums.
IMO, the Pixies were a prickish snobby indy band who thought they were too good for the mainstream (especially Kim Deal, who's just a bitch) and yet they played for U2, probably only because of Frank Black, who in reality was the Pixies. In fact, I would say skip the Pixies and head straight for Frank Black. His music is cool, he's cool. Check out his album Teenager of the Year. Great stuff.

EP and Disco nailed it...B.B. King is known across a number of musical genres. Although I think Velvet Underground are legends, the majority of music consumers would not know who they are.
Not the greatest, but Primus was a fun opening band (Zoo TV Outside Broadcast).

We saw Fun Lovin' Criminals open on PopMart...it didn't start the evening off very well...the conversation went something like this...
Dad: "U2 better be good, Kate...I'd hate to think I spent all of this money on tickets to watch this crap all night!"
Me: "Dad...don't worry..."
Mom: *eyes widen as she watches the FLC frontman* "Did he just say 'fuckers'?!"
Me: "Umm...I think so..."
Mom: "That's not very nice..."
Sister: "I told you this concert would suck..."
Me: "Bite me!!! Don't you dare ruin my first U2 concert for me!"
Sister: "Shut up!!! This band sucks almost as bad as U2! And Bono's gay!"
