Week 24

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
In the Netherlands the album drops 4 spots to #28.
The full chart run of How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (27-11-2004):
1-1-2-3-4-4-5-6-7-8
6-1-1-3-6-4-8-10-11-14
17-17-24-28

SYCMIOYO single dropped out of the top 50 a few weeks ago.

Big comeback in Greece (i'm not sure if this is week 24 - chart date is from 1. - 7. may):

#9 (last week #14, two weeks ago #28) - and HTDAAB has gold status, but I have no idea, how many sales this means!

Sometimes in Greece still on #25

 UK : #72 (#60) - Probably sold about 2500-3000 = 1070000 (est. overall total).

So, a nasty 12 spot drop for Bomb this week in UK. But COBL has just been released to radio so hopefully Bomb will now start to increase it's sales.

Yes, but it's amazing to see it is still in the TOP40 (13th week, from 17 to 18). This chart is for a large part based on airplay. In the airplay chart it's at number 16.

(Sometimes #61, after last comeback-week on #60)

 Great result!! Show's that the European leg of the tour might be already starting to have an influence on sales. Hopefully this is also happening in UK as we speak. :)

BTW - I've just got another e-mail from Mediatraffic, which says that they cover "nearly 95%" of worldwide album sales. So I think we can now safely say that HTDAAB has sold 8M to consumers worldwide.

The rest of the world...

Thought I'd post chart positions for some countries that don't always make it onto our posts...

Latvia Top 50 Singles
Sometimes rises from 42 to 22! (2nd chart run...it's been on the chart for 17 weeks and peaked at #1)

Austria

HTDAAB down 3 to 52

Estonia Top 100 Albums
Best of 1990-2000 at 53

Sometimes re-enters one Top 30 singles chart at 28 (only other artists I recognized on this chart were Moby and Ray Charles)

**Chart Headlines are "U2 "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" powróciło na listę," if someone can translate.

Here is the other singles Chart, which refers to the "other" chart position of 28 under the "Glosuj" column. This chart is a Top 60 chart, and Sometimes is up to 11, so I like this one better.

Poz. Utwór Wykonawca Głosy Głosuj

Incredible that Bomb is #1 in Chile! - I wonder how many it's sold there. In fact, I wonder how many it's sold in the whole of South & Central America.

Also, interesting that Best of 1990-2000 is doing better (#53) than Bomb (#57) in Estonia & Best of 1980-90 is #6 in Argentina.

Thanks again for all this info beLIEve.

And all this without any announcement that U2 will go to South America... unbelievable.

Come on, U2, go back to South America in 2006.

so only now HTDAAB has gone to #1 in chile?, not when first released?

so how many countries #1 in now?

Ireland
UK
USA
Australia
Finland
Holland
Brazil
Poland
Norway
New Zealand
Germany
Austria
Italy
France
Canada
Switzerland
Portugal
Belgium
Denmark
Greece
Spain
Sweden
Chile

thats 23, any others?

33 or 34

I don't remember ever seeing an official list, but numerous articles, including interviews with Paul M., Bono, Interscope officials, etc., claimed the album hit #1 it either 33 or 34 countries. Then there was a slight debate, on this forum, as to whether that was the all time record or not - we had conflicting data about whether or not it was a tie with the Beatles 1 album, or if it was the outright record.

From the jist of things, I believe we agreed that it was at least a tie for the record of hitting #1 in that many countries...and yes, I do recall several South American countries on the list, including Argentina, Brazil, and Chile for sure...also some Central American countries...I'll go look for that thread.

Here is one post...

Here is one of the posts that I started after reading the Sun Times article, which is about Bono's family sleeping 6 to a giant bed, but it also does mention that HTDAAB has hit #1 in 34 countries at the time. That was a tie with Beatles 1. I thought at the time that it would eventually hit #1 in 37 or more countries, but this was also a hot topic at Zootopia, and I'll look for those threads...it stayed at 34 as far as I can remember, and there was an official list on that forum at one time. Anyway, enjoy the article, too...be sure to click on the link found in the thread below before reading the other posts.

P.S. Are any chart watchers going to Philly on May 22 or Boston on May 28? I went to Chicago by myself, which was a very different but incredible experience. I would like to meet up with some fellow U2 fans from Interference, though, if I go alone again.

Come on, U2, go back to South America in 2006.

Unoffically, U2 is supposed to go on a 4th leg to include Mexico, South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, and I even read about an attempt to go to China. Of course, everything is unofficial past this year, IMO.

However, we always look per U2 per capita sales in the U.S., UK, Europe as a whole, Canada, etc. I've watched Argentina from the start, and that country has really supported the album and the singles since the release date. Mexico not so much, but they could sell out several stadium dates there, in Rio, Santiago, Buenos Aires, etc. They have supported U2...maybe U2 can return the favor with a 4th leg.

Ah, nevermind about the per capita sales. The population in Argentina is 37M, and it's 59M in the UK. I do find these statistics interesting, though, so I'll list the populations of some of the major countries where we should know U2 sales for HTDAAB, or perhaps all albums, and see just where U2 is the most popular, besides Ireland, or some trends over time, etc. Maybe edge3 can help me out here?

Here's a list to start, rounded to nearest M unless under 10M:

UK 59M
Italy 57M
Spain 42M
Germany 82M
France 61M
Belguim 10M
Denmark 5.4M
Greece 11M
Netherlands 16M
Portugal 10M
Ireland 4M
Australia 20M
Canada 32M
U.S. 289M
Mexico 102M
Argentian 37M
Brazil 180M
Chile 15M

I just took a shot at some of the countries where U2 is likely to tour and have significant and perhaps quantifiable album sales. If we end up looking at this and you want to add a country, go for it. Reply if you have some info and want to look at this.
