Usually they're live - also - GMA is in big competition with the Today Show Summer Concert series on Friday mornings - they'll want to flaunt it everywhere that they scored U2......GMA doesn't do anything quietly and expect big promotions and tie ins to other shows with this appearance....perhaps Prime Time Live interviews, etc.

The Today show has had 1 million people show up for The Backstreet Boys and Britney so I'd expect huge turnout and traffic backed up to New Jersey for U2

Its not live - this was announced before, in large part because of the commitments of the Vertigo tour

there was a report in a few newspapers that a producer for GMA said the show will be taped...

... but GMA's own webpage says this...

April 20, 2005 — On the following dates "Good Morning America" will broadcast our Summer Concert Series from Bryant Park (41st Street and 6th Avenue, New York City) from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. YOU DO NOT NEED TICKETS.

*May 20 — U2
Please note: This concert is not at Bryant Park. Continue to watch the show for updates.

... and it's painfull obvious that the band is going to be in New York City on this day... they play Continental Airlines Arena, just across the Hudson River from NYC, on the 17th & 18th, and they play MSG the following day, the 21st.

so frankly all we really know for sure is that they won't be at bryant park. wether ot not it will be live or taped is still up for debate... it's been stated that it will be taped, but they may just have said that in order to keep the crowds down. so who knows... we shall see very soon.
