Interesting. I guess we'll have to wait until the official boxscore comes out - same with Miami, as I'm skeptical about Pollstar's numbers. :reject:

I want to say that Pollstar was the one who estimated U2 360's Australian dates to be only $30 million in their 2010 year end report. They were so off with their estimate it was scary. To their credit however, they didn't come back after the fact and use openers and strategic scheduling as excuses for their prediction ;)

I think they based their Australia estimations on the 2010 European averages per CITY. Most European cities only had one performance in 2010, which is why the averages per city must have been something like 70,000 and $7,000,000. And that's what they used to generate their estimates for the Australian tour stops. Of course it was way off, as each city had 2 shows unlike the European leg.

We have boxscores! Miami, Nashville, and Chicago reported.

Tampa's attendance was a little bit higher than Miami, but Miami has a higher gross. Great numbers for all three cities, what's the final total for the Chicago shows?

Billboard 2011 top tour (In Progress)-$221,611,352

I think they're easily getting the Top Tour of 2011 - Bon Jovi has only done $56.9 million in North America, plus another $75-$100 million in Europe with the outdoor shows. Other major touring artists aren't doing as close as what U2 are doing now. Interesting how the average ticket price for North America has remained quite steady.

Amazing show by U2 in Philadelphia last night! Security stated that the show was completely soldout, every seat. So it will be interesting to see the boxscore figures.

Billboard mentions U2's overall gross so far at $676 million on this weeks top tours which is dead on with our numbers.

Looks like with all three Chicago U2360 shows reported, we can determine the final stats for the city.

TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 200,169

So they barely passed the 200,000 mark - is this a Billboard record for a single city?

I don't really think they'll pass U2's European record because they're not as successful in Europe as they are in the UK and Ireland. But damn, those are some numbers. U2 still wins in Dublin though.

Holy $#!@ at those Wembley numbers!!!! Overall these are insane numbers for such a small region. Too bad they can't draw big numbers anywhere else, save for maybe Germany/France, or they would have one of the biggest tours ever! I'm very impressed.

Yep best they could do in North America are arenas if it was both Take That and Robbie Williams. I don't think they could top u2 in just Europe not counting the UK. I will give them this though no one will ever top them in the UK..lol

Take That, Reunited British Boy Band With Robbie Williams, Beats Bruce Springsteen's Record | Billboard.biz

Hold on a second, there is a tour by U2 called 360 which has the following numbers for Europe:

U2 360 TOUR: EUROPE STATS

GROSS: $319,846,811
ATTENDANCE: 3,072,006
Average Gross: $6,953,192
Average Attendance: 66,783
Average Ticket Price: $104.12
Shows: 46
Sellouts: 46

Take That at best will be settling for a distant second.

Also, the numbers that are record breaking are not the Scotish, Welsh or Irish numbers, but the English ones. 22 stadium shows in England alone. That is where the lion share of this popularity for them is coming from. The most stadium shows U2 has ever done in England on a single tour is 5 shows.

As a matter of fact, U2's career number of stadium shows in England is 18. Its 19 if you include the Milton Keynes Bowl show from the Unforgettable Fire Tour in 1985.

Sorry for the confusion what I meant was the record in a single year. I know U2 hold the record for an entire tour..:) For example The Rolling Stones still hold the record for a single year in the U.S. Take That alone could not beat U2 in Europe and definintely would not have these numbers without Robbie Williams.

Remember though Robbie Williams sold 1 million tickets in Europe in 6 hours so It would be interesting to see what Take That and Robbie Williams could do if they actually played a full European leg, not just 6 shows outside of the UK. I think they could get close to U2's record, but U2's record would be tough to beat!

So they barely passed the 200,000 mark - is this a Billboard record for a single city?

Bruce did close to 700,000 at giants in 2003. Take That may be #2 in the mid 400's in London.

Bruce did over 300,000 in LA in 1985.
Jacksons in LA in 1984.
Robbie at Knebworth 2003 upwards of 375k(unreported)
MJ in Mexico 1992 probably 350-400k(unreported)
U2 Dublin 2005 & 2006

I think a couple arena tours may have even hit 200k in one city. Prince in LA or London. Bruce doing 15 or 10 night runs in NYC.

whilst we have known for a while that TT have sold an crazy amount of tickets in the UK, i am suprised at the grosses.
1.8m tickets averaging over $102

that really is staggering.

if we take the uk and ireland as one market - has there ever been any grosses close to this in ANY market in history??

I guess there must have been some pretty big Vegas residencies over the years, but $185m....

As far as the gross of the Take That Tour in UK is concerned, i think we should take into account the currency rate between the british pound and the us dollar. The current exchange rate is 1 GBP to 1.61 USD, whereas 1 EUR stands for 1.41 USD for example. And with 27 out of 29 dates calculated on GBP, they took fully advantage of this strong currency. That said, I don't want to underestimate their achievement at all, i just want to state how relevant to the currency rate is the gross calculation.

With 6 shows to go, Take That have some good chances to beat U2 in Pollstar's year-end results.

Take that is currently at $185 million with 6 shows to go. These 6 shows should pull in big numbers but not what they did in the UK. So, lets say they do about $5.75 million per show (10% less then in the UK). That would give them an additional $34 million (say $35 for arguments sake. So in 2011 they will have brought in $185+$35= $220 million

U2 is currently at $172 million with 9 shows to go (of which 6 are going to be very big in Montreal x2, NY, Phil, Mocton & minneapolis). Assuming a conservative average gross of 6 million per show, U2 should bring in an additional $54 million (say $55 for arguments sake). So at the very least, U2 should bring in $172 + $54= $226 million

Given the dollar amounts that we are talking about, it is going to end out very close but with U2 winning by at least $6 million and possibly as much as $10 million. Of course if Take That add a few more dates, the title for top tour in 2011 is theirs.

Looking back at this tour, I am absolutely amazed at these numbers. From the average gross and attendance to the total gross and attendance, it is clear that they are the biggest draw in the world.

The only disappointment I have is that since this is the biggest tour ever, I wish they maximized their gross. I hate looking back and saying "well, if they did the stadium tour in 2001 that they planed to do...." or "well, if they just waited a year to finish POP and then toured".

With 360, my only "regret" is that they didn't play Japan and didn't play the 10 more dates (roughly 8 markets) that they could have in Europe. If you take these dates:

Japan x2
South Korea
England x 2 (poss 3)
Ireland x 2 (poss 3 w/ Belfast)
Netherlands (poss 2)
Israel
Budapest

Figure 7 million per show average, that would have been an additional $70 million on top of the $740 million that they will gross. The full potential of this tour would have been roughly $810 million for a purely stadium tour (not to mention if they really wanted to milk out an extra few million ala the Stones they could have played Hawaii and Boston).

With that said, what they did is OUT OF THIS WORLD.

They could have played a show in Tokyo and Osaka, and Tel Aviv. Not sure about Seoul, as international artists (Celine Dion, Eagles, Billy Joel) tend to bring crowds below 15,000.

But this is already the biggest tour in history, what an incredible achievement. I'm sure they'll visit Japan on the next tour, but too bad they missed an incredible show.
