Leaked.
If you liked the classic rock-styled Pig Lib, you're going to love it. It has more in common with that than the more Pavement-esque Face the Truth or the catchy storytelling of the self-titled debut. This leans heavier on the psychedelic side, with more guitar solos than you can shake a stick at. Janet Weiss from Sleater-Kinney is a great addition to the band (not just on drums but her heavenly backing vocals as well), and prevents it from getting too hippie-dippie. The Jicks are really on fire this time. Musically the most accomplished album, and that probably includes Pavement.
The big star here, though--Malkmus' guitar is just a magic wand. I've long thought he was the best guitarist in rock and roll and this just solidifies it. The 10 minute-long title track...fucking INSANE. Other highlights are Baltimore, Out of Reaches, Gardenia... hell, they're all good.
I do not feel I'm exaggerating when I say this is the best thing S.M. has done since the demise of Pavement, and while it may not have the high points of Terror Twilight, you could easily make the case that it's a better album.
Release date is March 4th.
