Would Peter Gabriel's solo stuff count as New Wave?
Would Peter Gabriel's solo stuff count as New Wave?
He's not really considered an artist of this genre, though.
This is restricted to specific genres known as "Retro" music from that time period. It's essentially punk rock and new wave.
The Police is though, kinda.
Boy and October should be allowed in Post Punk, right? Just like Echo?
But what if a particular Peter Gabriel song fits the New Wave sound?
I guess it could work. He's got some early songs like Modern Love, On The Air, and DIY that could easily fit.

I don't any of those sound "new wave" to me. Peter was off in his own little world.
Then all is well with the world
I understand, but he and Bowie were considered pioneers of the genre, right? "On the Air" off of Peter Gabriel II sounds incredibly like something from the era.
EDIT: Looks like this has already been cleared up. But using something from Bowie's Low should be allowed, methinks.
Phanan, how do you define retro? Not everything in the late seventies and early eighties had a particular genre label but it definitely sounds retro.
I was wondering about Bowie songs from the Labyrinth Get some Magic Dance going

Mid-'80s Bowie may be pushing it, but I can see his Eno albums (maybe not "Heroes") and Scary Monsters working out fine

Screwtape, you better not drop out. Utopia is fine, as is early Gabriel, U2. I don't think anyone is gonna complain if you blur the line.
I see Bowie and Gabriel more of creating the sound but not neccessarily the genre of new wave. They brought synths and solid pop-rock together. That was huge but the genre itself can be tranced back to other artists.
I was mostly kidding. I was listening to a song earlier that reminded me of Magic Dance, that's where that came from
This is true, but I think they are close, and if helps people out, I'd think it would be ok.
