CRAZY TONIGHT

Coming back to GOYB now, months after its debut, I'm increasingly surprised by its frequent dismissal. Apart from my subjective feeling about the song (I really like it), I'd expect it to be much more popular around these parts considering all the Pop love (and 90s love in general).

NLOTH as a whole was a FLOP. Why listen to it??

Seriously, I do think it's the weakest song on the album, but I still really dig it. UC, Crazy Tonight, and GOYB are all pretty much interchangeable on my list, depending on my mood. They all have strengths, but some major weaknesses that destroy the potential for them to be anything more than pretty good.

My revised list:

Timeless U2 masterpieces:
1. Magnificent (neck in neck with)
2. No Line On The Horizon
3. Moment of Surrender
4. Breathe
5. Unknown Caller
6. FEZ/Being Born
Very good U2 songs:
7. Get On Your Boots
8. Cedars of Lebanon
9. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Good U2 songs:
10. White As Snow
Kinda crap:
11. Stand Up Comedy

1. MOS
2. Crazy tonight
3. White as snow
4. Magnificent
5. Unknown Caller
6. Breathe
7. No line
8. Boots
9. Fez
10. Cedars
11. Stand up

still think all the songs are very good or quite excellent

Unknown Caller (Intro too long, great work from Edge at the end).

WAS (Not sure it fits the album, but still a very good song).
Crazy (Sometimes higher up the list depending on mood, much better live).
Stand Up (Nearly a very good song).

:hmm: . . .never been very good at this ranking thing (always feel like I'm hurting someones feelings :coocoo: I know) . . . sooo, for what its worth - have come back to this album after a little rest (played it non stop for about 3 weeks until the kids were nearly in tears )

1. Magnificent - still get chills up my spine when Edge's guitar kicks in and there is something just gloriously uplifting about the song - makes my heart sing
2. No Line - loved this one from the get go and still do - love bono's slightly menacing undertow and the groove that sits quietly in the background - fantastico
3. Breathe - love it cuz its a little erratic but an absolute grower, adore the imagery and scatty lyrics and the pulsing guitars
4. White as Snow - lovely and lush and I like that it feels like an Irish folk song
5. Crazy Tonight - the opening and closing seal the deal for me and listening to the live treatment of it  great
6. Boots - fast and furious and bloody good fun . . . puts a big ole smile on my face everytime (and listening to my kids trying to keep up with the lyrics makes it all the sweeter :D )
7. Fez - Being Born - I know a lot of people find it boring but I quite like the disparities between beginning and end of the song, it takes you somewhere a little unexpected
8. Moment of Surrender - I see saw a bit on this one, sometimes I love it and other times, meh, big ole skip . . .its growing on me as a closer though . . .
9. Unknown Caller - I sometimes just find myself doing the cringe when I hear the old restart/reboot yourself refrain . . .but loving what I have heard of it live so far :)
10. Stand Up Comedy - reminds me of The Cruel Sea and last few listens its been on the receiving end of the skip button . . .not sure why, really loved it when I first heard it, and now, well, it still whips the butt of some of the stuff on the radio at the moment but its not really doing it for me anymore :)
11. Cedars of Lebanon - lovely piece but some days I just can't be bothered listening to it all . . .

no I feel like I need to do penance!

been an interesting read flicking through this thread - and I actually think its fantastic that there is a real diversity of opinions on this album re fave songs

When I'm in an atmospheric mood:

MOS
UC
F - BB
WAS
COL

When I'm in a rock mood:

NLOTH
M
IGCIIDGCT
GOYB
SUC
B

When I'm in the mood for anything (rock or atmospheric) I can just press play on the album and let it go.
