Just to give a break from the tour discussion...

Does anyone know what that noise is in the intro to Mothers of the Disappeared? You know, the one that sounds like something mechanical or metal rubbing on metal or maybe it's a clock?
Just curious...

According to the 8 Sept. '03 issue of Uncut, it's one of the (many) synthesizer parts Eno composed and played for JT, in this case meant to simulate "sinister death squad darkness" (Adam's words).

Not really a thorough answer, but it's all I could find...

On the Joshua Tree Classic Albums show, I think they said it was Larry playing through some kind of processor. I'll have to watch it again to find out what it is for sure.

I seem to remember hearing it came form a track of Larry making some kind of noise on a metal post or something, and Eno spliced it in there. Though I could be confusing this with the coffee cup from Zoo Station...
That's what I thought, anyway.

Would this "The Making of the Joshua Tree" DVD also be the same DVD as the "Classic Albums: U2: The Joshua Tree" by any chance?
I think I'll have to add this to my movie list...

Oh and btw, thanks everyone for your replies!

Yes, The Edge89, it is a Lexicon PCM70.
It was the state of the art effect processor used in the recording studios back in the eighties.
The effect Brian Eno used and modified is called " Resonant Delays".
And it was Larry`s drums wich were processed with it.

cheers,
